I’m working on a Card Warp-type routine based on the movie "The Fly," where I use a king or jack to represent the scientist, and draw a picture of a fly on the back of the card. Entering the teleporter machine (a dollar -- I’m using Greenwarp), the man and the fly change places, then change back (which is why I use Greenwarp, to show that they change places "completely"). But on the third try something goes horribly wrong and they merge into a grotesque man/fly creature! I know that doesn’t follow the actual movie plot, but I think it’ll work anyway.
For the end I say that the creature of course has to be destroyed, and tear the card... at least that’s what I’ve got now. What I’d like, however, is a way to restore the card after the tear, for a more impressive finish and a happy ending. Problem is, none of the T&R card methods I know would fit the bill here. Does anyone know of one that would? I don’t do Hoodwink, but from what I’ve read about it I wonder if it might be the one. Any thoughts? (And yes, I realize the movie ended like I’ve got the trick ending now, with the creature being killed; maybe I’ll talk about how when I saw the movie as a kid I always thought the ending was so sad, and wanted them to be able to "fix" the scientist... or mention a just-rediscovered alternate ending, to be included with the DVD release or something.)

There are at least a few restoration methods for Card Warp out there. No need to leave the CW framing and go to a traditional T&R handling.
One more pass through the "machine" should provide the needed cover. I don’t use a restoration kicker so I am not in posession of sources off the top of my head. A little help from the gallery One thought that leapt out at me is get rid of the buck. It makes no sense to me. Make your own thing into which you fold the card. This is science fiction, maybe it is a torn piece from a High School text book. This could be a reinactment of your idle whiles from school days. Maybe it is a page actually torn from the book "The Fly" and the text plays a bit part in the presentation. Maybe the piece of paper is from the original scientist’s notes. The directions for the process are on the paper. It’s up to you. Let your imagination fly! Sorry about that Quinn _________________ Tom Cutts Publisher, AM/PM About Magic...Performing Magic |

[Sound of me smacking myself in the forehead for not thinking of that on my own.] Good advice as usual, Tom. I was sticking with the dollar to keep a borrowed element in the routine, but your way is much better. Any resources for Card Warp restorations would be much appreciated.

Did you know a dollar (if folded correctly) can make an excellent minature change bag?
Just about the right size for swapping a torn card for a non torn card.. only problem would be palming the non torn "man-fly" creature up to the bill. Here’s something else: Paul Harris has a torn & restored that uses just one card BUT leaves one quarter of the card un-restored. So maybe by some miracle of science this "man-fly" creature was attempted to be brought back, but it didn’t quite work. I don’t know. love the idea by the way.

Alain Nu offers a fine restoration effect at the end of Card Warp, called Warpogami, in his lecture notes, "Nu Discoveries". The torn card becomes a cute origami figure made from the "original" selection.

Michael Close (On the Workers Video) has a nice "unplanned" Restoration at the end of his Greenwarp with a $2.00 bill. But it would work very nicely with something other than a $2.00 Bill, and it sounds like you could lay your routine right into it.
You have to see it to know, but I am already thinking about a whole new plot and some using a sheet other than a $2.00 Bill - Your idea of the Fly got my mind unstuck and I will go in a different way that I wouldn’t have thought of before. Thanks for Sharing it! BroDavid _________________ If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

Check out Burger and Neales’ book "Magic and Meaning" - there’s a routine in there that combines Card Warp and Paul Harris’ Ultimate Rip-off restoration. The presentation is really interesting, too.
Tommy Wonder has a pretty fun improvement on the Ultimate Rip-off torn and restored effect that I like, too.

In my Card Warp, I talk about the "Bermuda Triangle" and the unexplained phenomena that occur there. Then showing a pack of Bicycle cards I explain that I've discovered a lesser known phenomena, quite by accident - "The Bicycle Rectangle" ... and it goes from there. I have never come up with an entirely satisfactory reason for ripping the card in two at the end... but doing a restoration - now that would add yet another odd phenomena worth pursuing.

I always opened Card Warp by asking if they had ever heard of The Philadelphia Experiment. I explain it was a top secret Navy experiment after the war that Einstein was involved in, where ships were sent into another dimension and became invisible. I say this is an outgrowth of that experiment, I call it the "-----" Experiment and named the place where I was working.

I use a "Back to the Future" plot, saying that I have been working on some elaborate origami fold that I call the "time machine"...and I simply fold the bill in half. (usually a weak and sympathetic laugh here) I ask a spectator to note the time to the nearest second as I introduce and fold the card, drawing attention to the fact that at this specific time, the card was folded THIS way. Then I load the card and bill together , and ask what the time is NOW to the nearest second. It's usually about fifteen seconds later. We then proceed to send the card back in time about fifteen seconds, giving everyone a sense of vertigo...

Into the tird dimension and beyond by Jeff Busby
(The routine that Roy Walton shortened, added a card, and some killer moves, and released as card warp) was originally done as a card turning inside out in you hand, then being torn into four pieces and then restored. probably still available from Busby, and worth the study. The steal of the extra something and the switch are very bold and clever.

The new movie about the security guard at a bio-weapons intstitute could provide a story, too. At first he thinks he is turning into a super-hero like Spiderman; in the end he finds he is a monster, something like "The Fly."
