I've gone through this thread and have a question about this effect...is it mandatory for the whole "prediction made two weeks ago" angle, or for a stage or parlor show, say "I made this prediction earlier tonight"?

It seems like a good effect, but with the type of performances I do, I'm not really in it to get acclaim or make the local papers. I'd just like to do a great stage prediction routine. So, is the whole "VIP holding the box for two weeks" a necessary aspect of the effect, or can it be adapted to a stage prediction?

The final prediction is a headline, so saying "earlier tonight" won't wash!
To use it for a "that day" prediction is certainly possible, but a bit of a waste. After all the whole point of the glass (actually lucite) box is to to transparently display 3 predictions, one of which is totally impossible.
When I book a stage show, I either send a cassette or the box up to a month in advance, with a reminder letter and email right before the event. It works perfectly on stage, trust me.

Well... I agree with Docsteve: considering the routine it's indeed better to be at least one day ahead.

Just to let you know another magician on another thread explains that he has used the box to do a lottery prediction where the glass box was sealed at the beginning of the show. It is possible to do that but imo it's not very practical.

I assume goldeneye007 refers to me, as I described on another thread that I used Glass Box for a lottery prediction. Please understand, it was a once off publicity stunt (that worked out very well). There was no ther practical way to do the prediction other than doing it live on stage.

Since then, I have done a headline prediction at corporate events a couple of times. To get the full effect for this great routine, you have to do the sealing of the box with them some days in advance. For a headline prediction, you obviously have no other choice.

Hope this helps!

Hello Alexander!

Yes, I was indeed referring to you!

My post was just for informative purposes, I hope you did not feel offended...

I just wanted people to know that you COULD use it for a lottery prediction and seal the box in front of everybody, but that it was more difficult to achieve alone.

Cheers!

Ben

Hey buddy, not offended at all

I'm also considering doing a prediction at a sports event, now I'm thinking maybe I should still do a headline prediction with one of them being the result. Then I should give the box to the manager of the home team a week or so before...

All in all, the Glass Box Prediction is worth every cent. Never regretted buying it.

Good... I'm relieved then.

It sure would be nice to predict one outcome of the sports event you will perform at! And yes, you could use the Glass Box, even though a headline would be easier to do...

The Glass Box is indeed a nice routine!

Good luck for your performance then!

Well my friends I just received mine today and man let me tell you it's a WELL thought out routine with perfect handling. Al Mann and Devin Knight did a wonderful service to the magic community when they thought up this effect and now it's available for us to learn and entertain with. I am very well pleased with this purchase and I will perform it for the first time in July. Until then I will learn it practice it and practice it some more. Not that you need that much time to learn it---in fact the beauty of this is it is pretty easy to learn. I however have a really good size party I'm performing at in July and I want to reserve it for that time. But wow this is a great effect and I want to thank Devin Knight and the late Al Mann for a job very well done.

Good magic to all,

Eric

This is an incredibly strong effect. I love the innocent look of the box, as well as the ease and inexpense of acquiring replacement props after each performance. By far the best headline prediction effect I've ever used. However, I find myself using sparingly, usually only performing it when I play a new party or show... I never use it for a repeat booking.

Been using this for a few years now with not one person figuring it out.

I predicted a week in advance 3 newspaper headlines for my collegues at my new job a few weeks ago.

I still get asked how its possible.

One question though. Some people talk about something called the carlyle prediction or something like that. Could someone inform me of how the prediction looks to the audience?

Cheers guys

Peace and love

Carlyle's is called the Butter Tub Prediction and plays much the same, although you send them an envelope and not a box. It is very nice, and I have done both. My preference is for the glass box as the parcel is more intriguing to the recipient than an envelope.

For the Butter Tub, the client gets the envelope, rips it open, pours out the contents into a bowl, and the predictions are then read out. You can do headlines, sports results, anything, really.

I bet that is the part where one prediction is wrong, but comes true the next day in the headlines.

Today was the first time I performed this effect. I have a big birthday coming up in july at an ex-mayors home and I'm going to perform it there too. That was going to be my first time---but you know us magicians and mentalists! Well 3 days ago I dropped off "The Box" I showed it had 2 white pieces of folded paper and a taped shut folded card. I took blue masking tape and wrapped it. Then I took 4 gold foiled seals and placed them over the masking tape and box. I initialed the gold seals and so did my VIP. He held onto it untouched until today. This is exactly what happened. The VIP undid the seals and tape (took about 1 and a half min). I used a crossword book as my word prediction---it proved right on. They were impressed. They then chose a card and the VIP took the card prediction and guess what? Yep they matched. And yes they were impressed. But THEN CAME THE NEWSPAPER PREDICTION! They read the 3 predictions I made and opened their copy of the newspaper and yes the 3 predictions proved very accurate! And I was NOT prepared for the reaction. I have performed for many years and have gotten some very nice reactions. But this will stand out as the best reaction for a mentalism effect. The VIP actually threw down the prediction and said "How in the heck did you know that----you gave us this box 3 days ago and no one has touched it and I know you were not here since you dropped off the box!" NOTE: The VIP did not say "How did you DO that" but "how did you KNOW that". It is that clean and that well thought out.

I hope anyone sitting on the fence on this effect will just buy it and use it. You will get the reactions and you will have fun using it.

Good magic to all,

This can be quite the reputation maker, so needless to say, you should use this sparingly.

Eric,

I agree with the fact about getting an unexpected reaction.

Mine was stunned silence. But it was POWERFUL silence. At first, I thought they didn't understand or get it. Well, they DIDN'T understand how this could be. (I dropped the box off 2 weeks ahead of time.)

After the stunned silence, they exploded into applause. During the following week, people that were at the show were emailing me asking if I went to the national remote viewing institute (I forget the name of it).

Yes, Devon, as I've stated before, it's AMAZING. What's really impressive to me is the cleverness of the card force.

But I love the whole routine.

Marqus,

You are so right. I love the whole routine too. I'm always amazed when people come up with great magic ideas and then share them. In other business' a lot of people don't share because they want to be the only ones that can do this or that. Yet with some very talented magicians and mentalists it seems sharing to PROMOTE our art is more important. Without people like Jules Lenier, Tony Chris, Devin Knight and many others who have already left their magic footprint, magic would grind to a stop. This is one such example. This is a true gem and something I feel we can be proud of when we perform it.

BTW I would not be doing justice if I also did not include the members of The Magic Café who contribute with their ideas and posts too. I think we can all agree we've read some good stuff here.

Thank you to all of you non-selfish magicians and mentalists! I applaud you.

Good magic to all,

A revised version may be coming out soon. Since releasing this back in 2005 I have had additional thoughts. I have also read the many comments. Yes I realize this was one of my early releases and had typos. Since then I have engaged professional editors and my writing skills have improved over the years.

I am thinking of rewriting this into a spiral bound book with the additional ideas and with errors and typos corrected. Many people have suggested this be made into a book to reflect the quality of the release. Since plastic boxes are readily available in office supply stores, one will not come with the book.

The price will be the same and the cost of producing higher quality book would offset the cost of not providing a plastic box. Other things can be used and those items will be discussed.

If I release this, it will be called: The Glass Box Revisited

Why?

Are you given a discount when you buy a 2.1 version of a computer game/program?
