Man...you guys whine because he puts the same stuff on a lot of DVDs, now you're whining because he DIDN'T put the same stuff on these DVDs.

If you are going to call something your "Greatest Hits" then it should have your greatest hits.

Agreed. This was expected to have all his old and best stuff on it, which is different than buying a brand new Sankey book/DVD only to find that you already have 6 of the effects on another book/DVD. I for one have never "whined" about Sankey and have actually always supported his work. With this though, I feel my "whining" is justified.

Ok ok, I know, you've all heard my opinion. All complaining aside now, does anyone know what's up with the bonus effects? Are they all brand new or just hard to find. I could have sworn I saw someone on the Café mention that they used "extended credits" before which got me wondering where the bonus effects come from. Well, the demo video is up, so I'm going to watch it regardless of my preconcieved ideas about the set.

I like Sankey a lot. I know a lot of people don't but I think he's created some devistating effects. And even some of the weaker ones I've reworked into better ones for my style. Front Row Sankey was great, so much usable stuff. And VBO... one of the best collections of magic I can think of... but this... well, it's just VBO minus some of the better effects. Shame. I really wanted to check out the bonus effects. Guess I'll pass.

Oh, and one more thing. Okay, so he doesn't include Paperclipped! but he's created a lot of other effects which are variations on Paperclipped!... and has managed to not include one of them on this set (unless it's one of the effects I don't know about). I thought Paperclipped! was the one effect he'd be willing to risk his life on. Shouldn't that be included in a Greatest Hits?

Exactly what I'm saying! Absolutely unbelievable! I did watch the demo video and it looks alright. I mean, if you're really into Sankey's comedy, then maybe you'll like it. When I saw the effect "nowhere coins" though, I was thinking "wait a second, this is just a variation on the effect "roll over" from revolutionary coin magic." It's been varied SLIGHTLY, but for those who own the video, you'll see this is nothing new. It's a shame because I've really enjoyed Sankeys stuff and also thought since "front row Sankey" things would just get better. Sigh

Maybe he didn't put Paperclipped on there because he has an entire DVD devoted to it. And if you're so intent on learning Paperclipped, you're probably best off buying that DVD because it covers it in great detail.
And maybe he didn't put Airtight on here because he was looking for effects that were slightly more practical. Airtight is great but you're limited in where and when you can perform it. (It would be impractical for tablehopping because you give the deck away at the end so you'd have to have a bunch of prepped decks on you.) Quote:

What difference does it make if they have a similar methodology? Please, spare me the moaning. If these DVDs don't suit you, you don't have to buy them or post about them. |

All I'm saying is I've been waiting for this set for over 6 months and it was a huge dissapointment. That is why I posted (it made sense to do so if you read the first post I made in this thread.) Of course the reason he didn't include these routines is because he's making more money off them by marketing them seperately. I realize that. I just think the smarter thing to do would be to include them since almost every Sankey fan knows that he put a lot of his best stuff of The Very Best of Jay Sankey set. He's trying to sway people away form buying this set saying TVBO is now "second best" but he left out so much good stuff on this new set. That's now the best way to make money. Bottom line is if he doesn't have paperclipped, leaving home, parallel worlds and back in time on there, this is NOT his best stuff period. I understand what you're saying about airtight, but this is not a "best tablehopping stuff" DVD it's a "greatest hits DVD. There's plenty of his stuff that cannot be used for tablehopping like practice pack, yet I use that one all the time in my show and get a great response.
Also, paperclipped is one he said he would risk his life on. Why would he not put that on his "greatest hits" I'm familiar with the effect and use it all the time. I also use parallel worlds, and back in time and they are some of the strongest effects I do. My point is not that I want to learn the effects it's that I was looking forward to new performances of those effects and to hopefully learn some of the stuff that I have not learned (airtight, killer key- which I've been told has been taught in a previous book of his, dough, and other great effects.) As far as nowhere coins, you are correct, it is a different effect, I was just commenting on how it is frighteningly similar to rollover. On rev. coin magic he used all new and revolutionary techniques. I'd love to see some new ideas with the coins. This is just a slightly different use of an old idea, but yes if you make the slight adjustment of not starting off by showing coins in your other hand, then it is a different effect. I'm sorry and truly appologize if I come across as "moaning." I was simply trying to discuss my opinion about the DVD and express my disappointment in it which is why I posted in "the good the bad and the garbage." I felt this was the appropriate place for it. Every time I posted, I thought of something else that I should have added to the original post. That is why I posted about 300 times, but I admit that probably was overdoing it a little. I appologize. I think I've made my opinions known now and will try to refrain from going on and on like a broken record. I sincerely apologize and will try to ease up in the future. Please forgive me. Dann |

Do you guys recommend me to get this if I don't have Very Best of Jay Sankey? I have his other DVDs |

I don't have his very best. And I will get these soon. Then I will look for the other great routines in VBO in his older tapes, that way I will have some other older effects. You have to work your brains to get the most.

I think Jay Sankey's Greatest Hits is absolutely priceless. I saw the demo at PenguinMagic and in the dvds there were some of Jay's earlier pictures and contests. I just love magic dvd that shows some history of how the magician then and now - sort of a biographical perspective. I'm a big fan of Jay and even though I have his VBO in tapes, I'm still going to get his Greatest Hits!

Sankeys best DVD's to date is LL Pub's The Very Best of Jay Sankey. The sound and video quality is excellent because it is filmed in a studio with people who know how to edit and shoot.
The Very Best of Jay Sankey pretty much covers 99% of all of his BEST tricks and with the edition of Sankey Greatest Hits, just about every trick shown on the Very Best of Jay Sankey can be found elsewhere in Jay's other products. SAVE YOUR MONEY. It feels like the consumer is traveling in circles around Jay's products. And btw, evolve629: How can you say the DVD's are "absolutely priceless" when you have only seen a pretty crappy demo. Jay always starts with how this DVD will be the BEST unlike anything else. Please... |

I'm just shocked that Jay used to have a head full of hair and a pony tail too! How old was he then?
How old is he now?

Hi folks,
I don't ANY Jay Sankey vidoes or DVD's at all. However, I'm wanting to pick some up, so my question is this - if I want what REALLY is the best of Jay Sankey, what DVD's or videos should I buy? I know there are a stack to choose from, but if you could list the ones you think are essential I'd really appreciate it. Cheers |

My advise would be, look for the effects you would like and try to find on which DVDs they are and make the best purchase for you.

If you were only going to make one purchase I would say make it the Very Best of set (sorry Jay). That's not to say there isn't weaker stuff in there but it's got the best selection of his strongest material available on DVD.
It was a good battle, and they nearly won.

Ok. I know I've already put in more than my 2 cents, but to answer the question at hand, here is what I would do Billy James... first, go through the magic Café search engine. Type in "Sankey" and you'll find pages and pages of info. You'll find DVD and book reviews, but even more important you'll find lots of threads titled something like "your favorite Sankey effect" or "Sankey's 3 best tricks" or along those lines. Check out those threads and you'll find the effects that real people are using and to great success. Then go back to the reviews and you'll usually find detailed descriptions of the effects that people like and that will let you know where you can find them. To me, the Very Best of Jay Sankey was the way to go and had tons of great stuff on them, however, I've heard that Sankeytized 1 & 2 have all the good stuff from TVBO and more great stuff. I've also heard Sankey Unleashed has some incredible stuff in it, so if you're into books, check that out. If you ask me, Sankey is amazing. There are people that critisize saying his stuff is too simple and easy to figure out, but these are the poeple that have never tried the stuff for real people. I usually get my best reactions from Sankey creations. Good luck in your search. Let us know how it comes out.
