I got a piece of sponge-foam (I don't know the technical terminology)2 inches thick and I was wondering how to get it so perfectly round as the manufacturers do. Or at least close enough.
Thanks in advance, Sammy the Kid |

Start cutting. First make a cube and then begin trimming away at the corners, little bits at a time. Keep turning it around as you work. It won't look like a sphere when you get done, but it's perfectly usable in a sponge ball routine if you make three or four more just like it. Do you want colors?

Yeah! How do I do colors? Will RIT dye work?
Thanks, Sammy the Kid |

You can get a set of four for about $3.50, why not buy?

You can use almost the same method to make sponge ball to jumbo cube.

I would probably go to the grocery store and buy a small box of fabric dye. It works for dying your sheets blue, why not a sponge? Remember however, that it's going to depend on how much you put in. At first you may end up with purple (if you go red to blue)
I do think a Tie-Dye sponge would be pretty neat! They'd make an excellent final load for the cups and balls. As for cutting the sponge that's going to be a tricky one! You may find that it gets smaller and smaller the more you try to correct little bits and make it round. I think a homemade sponge ball would look kind of cool with all the little flat edges. It would seem very justified to say, "So I cut up some little pieces of sponge, let's see what we can do with them." It could lend itself to infinite patter choices. Best of luck! Let us know how it goes! -Chris.

Nobody ever said they have to be round.
Since your cutting them yourself, why not cut shapes that are more in character. I see you wear a cowboy outfit. Stars (Sheriff badges?) might be good and fairly easy to cut. A nail clipper might help fine tune the shapes. |

Soak the sponge in water, freeze it and cut it with an electric carving knife. Avoid the fingers.
Dye the sponge is going to be a problem unless you get the right kind of dye. The Rit dye works best on organic substances. The sponge will be a synethic. (sp). In college, I silk screened jumbo bicycle back cards (5 x7). The problem was the white sponge quickly yellowed. But a neat idea. Richard
