I haven't delved into hypnosis yet, but I have been taking a long hard look for the purpose of finding a good place to begin.

I'm not interested in the subject as a way to add to my magic show, but my curiousity involves the possibility of learnig self hypnosis as a path to personal improvement.

Not being involved yet, my unanswered questions are thus: Aside from the entertainment side, is it real, does it truly work, and can one learn the basics of self hypnosis to initiate changes in one's own attitude, personality/character, core beliefs, etc.?

Can one, for example, improve their confidence, poise, demeanor, as a magician, as well as a human being in other aspects of life?

Or is it all a lot of hokum?

If it is real and possible to use self auto suggestion as a path to self improvement, then where do we start? I've seen instructional DVDs on ebay, but have no real perspective from which to judge their quality or efficaciousness. Therefore I haven't bit yet.

I sure would love some good solid, dependable answers, though.

Thanks

If you want to learn more info about self hypnosis, I cannot suggest a better book than Valerie Austin's "Self Hypnosis". You can get it from many high street book stores or from the internet. The book explains the history of hypnosis, how to use hypnosis (both on yourself and on others) effectively, and case studies of how hypnosis has been used by Valerie. It is not only a fascinating read but also an extremely informative book.

Best Wishes,
Bryan

At the risk of being immodest, I would suggest that anyone with an interest in either clinical or stage hypnosis should find my book, "Hypnosis: Clinical, Social, and Theatrical Uses," helpful. Excerpts can be read online.

As a clinical hypnotherapist and psychology professor, I have hypnotized more than 20,000 people over the last 30 years. My book represents the distillation of what I have learned about the practical uses of hypnosis.

To answer the original poster, hypnosis is "real." In fact it has been accepted by the AMA as an appropriate therapy for many behavioral modification programs. And, incidentally, that endorsement occured in 1958!!

Daffydoug - not exactly massive excerpts but I did find this page: http://ehutchison.homestead.com/Northpointe.html

ed, is 'mental mysteries' useful without reading 'hypnosis' first?
and does it discuss practical mentalism at all?

thank-you,
