Hey guys, wondering what your favourite impromptu effects are with a borrowed deck. And I don't mean that one in a million person who has a two week old deck of bikes. I mean plastic, well worn cards, off sized, whatever. Appreciate your thoughts

Four touched cards are aces (Sankey), Ambitious card, selected card at any number (especially if the backs aren't bordered), two card transposition, anything really.
Just because cards are old or don't fan nicely doesn't mean I can't do a DL.

Lol man I only use 1 effect with a DL... I am such a newbie

Anyway, an ACR using standard moves could easily be done, or a routine where they keep picking the same card, then it jumps to your pockets, and the deck jumps to your pockets, and the card ends up in your wallet.(basically jazzing with a selected card using whatever moves you can do).

A trick with a stack can work well if you can cull the cards.
Slop shuffle triumph.
A good 4 ace location.
ect.... just about anything minus reversed cards, double lifts and any moves that have a lot of friction in them.

Overall though every single deck I've ever had offered to be borrowed has been in great condition... obviously they are usually bowed so reveresed cards in a small packet or near the top are no-no's, but generally they will pressure fan and handle pretty decently.

I think this is because spectators usually only have cards to play games with, so usually the deck will be completely and in at least good enough condition to play a game with.... as I said I may be lucky but generally the cards I run across are pretty decent.

Thanks guys. I have been travelling around the world for the last 1.5 years or so. I mostly have my own cards on me, but because I'm staying in hostels and at campsites, I can often get apprehended to do something for the "new people", with a deck of cards that has been through more beer than I have! It can be frustrating sometimes when you see the state of the cards, so it usually is "let me go to my room/tent to get a deck!" Scott

Don't know that one Corey, how does it play out?

ACR would be kinda difficult, I'm not saying you cant do it, but a DL with a dog eared deck can be rahter difficult to get away with some times, depending on the type of DL you use. But a triumph, T & R, Twisting the aces, Dr Daleys last trick. All the classics

Emotional Reaction - Dai Vernon
Double Reverse - from one of Anneman's books, though it's credited to others in other places

and

if I can sneak the deck off the shelf into the restroom for five minutes & then back on to the shelf (yes I've done it a few times), some basic items that require little or no sleight of hand other than a false shuffle and cut, from Mnemonica. Do THAT and you'll blow their minds.

What immediately comes to my mind is The Sweetest Sound by our Café member Scott Cram. Used a borrowed deck, the condition of the deck is inconsequential, and you can perform a great impromptu card trick for your spec. Very easy to do and plays big.

I'm familiar with Absolute zero from Paul Wilson, I own the video in which he perorms and explains it.
It's an absolute killer, and you can perform it with any deck, no matter how old or worn it is.

Is Absolute Zero evolution another version of the trick, or in any way superiour to the original?

I would love to hear.

The decks of cards that I'm usually handed or that I find in most people's homes are in awful shape. Even double lifts are risky. And they don't have white borders on the back, so any twisting effects are out of the question.

My strongest impromptu effect with a borrowed deck in any condition is the impromptu version of Bob Farmer's Tsunami.

I also like doing Daryl's Untouched followed by an impromptu OOTW, using an intuition theme. I use the impromptu version of Daryl's Out of this Hemisphere that uses the one-way design that is usually found on the back of borrowed cards.

It's not purely impromptu, but I usually try to have some stranger cards on me in various sizes and conditions so I can do the apparently impromptu T&R card from a borrowed deck effect from Expert Card Technique. It has far greater impact than any of the fancy one-piece-at-a-time T&Rs.

Lennart Green says this works best with a well worn deck but I can't recall now what effect or move he was talking about. The way he throws the cards about he might have meant all of his stuff.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Homing Card, or card to wallet ( a most likely non-original way of putting a playing card in one's driver's license card slot as one removes their wallet from their pocket).

I would do a cards across routine BUT where the cards jump from your hands into a stack of cards being held the spectator. I used to do Las Vegas Leaper/Instant Replay by Paul Harris(AOA series) ALL the time and people would sometimes question the "counting" of the card. I have come across a few subtleties in older magic books like "Royal Road to Card Magic" that have made this effect SO much more effective.... By the way, only 2 sleights and NO DL and NO crazy moves....... JPV

ps....I have recently been put to this test at an outdoor party at a friends home and the cards were like yellowed and all dog-eared, etc.....

One of my favorite impromptu effects which I love to do together with other mental effects such as Out Of This World is Smiths Myth. It can be done with the most beaten up old shuffled deck and is as strong a piece of mentalism as any. The first time I saw it done was by Slydini.

This is an effect that demands repetition and can be sold for all it's worth. I remember being invited to the house of a very well known sleight of hand artist and after witnessing some of his miricles he asked me to do one for him. Rather than embarress myself I performed Smiths Myth (which is virtually self working)and fooled the hell out of all the magicians present. To this day whenever I see this prominent magician, he always mentions how badly he was fooled with Smiths Myth.

Met with Tony Picasso last week at his VIP lounge located in the International Hotel of Picasso off of Sunset in LA. He took my deck and did the best culling I have ever seen. He separated the cards into red and black after one quick cull. Truly amazing! I've seen culling, but nothing to this degree.
