Hi to all!
If one would try to start in dove magic for general purposes, what book and/or video do you suggest? I'm at zero level in this matter... Thank you! Ste |

Ste: This subject has come up many times in this and other digests and my response is always the same. Like any other area of magic, dove magic takes a lot of time and effort behind the scenes. Be sure you are ready for the challenge.
That said, there are many great books and videos out there, but I would recommend the Tony Clark series of videos "Unmasked" and "Behind the Seams". General Grant is very good if you can find his video and Amos Levkovitch is excellent, although it is difficult to find his tapes. All of these take you from getting ready, care and feeding, training and maintenance and actual performance. Dove magic is a lot of fun but a lot of hard work as well. Enjoy yourself. Dave

Thank's Dave.
I agree a lot on what you said. In fact before eventually starting on dove magic, I'd like to understand about this world. But for the moment, I'd like to well understand about doves as birds, NOT the ultimate wonderful appearing method or dove production!! I'd like to learn about the cage, where to put it (indoor or outdoor) the food for the dove, the care, the "cleaning" and all the things I have to know to have a pair of doves at my home. Then the practice, the production props, etc... As I prefer to read books, can you suggest a valid one about what I explained above? Thank for your responce. Ste |

Ste: You're taking the right approach. In fact, more would be dove workers should follow this approach before they begin. I'm not sure what is available in Italy but there are many books available in libraries and book stores on the care and feeding of Doves.
Also, a great source of information on the web is the American Dove Association. They have been very helpful to me and also know of international counterparts that may be able to help you. Once you get the information and are ready to begin your magic career with doves, I'd be more than happy to help you get started. Dave

Ok Dave! I will start my research. Only two questions: for pratical situations the cage of dove, (for two doves) is better, has to be indoors or outdoors? I mean if the doves suffer the cold or can be left with no problem out of home (with the right protection from weather?)
The second one: Can you post me the internet site of American Dove Association? Thanks again. Ste |

Ste: Doves can withstand the cold as long as it is not severe and they are not in a draft. For just two doves, I would suggest keeping them in a cage indoors. There is a noise factor when they start to coo however.
Sometimes they coo for hours at a time so I'd locate the cage where it won't interfere with your normal daily routine. They can be a little messy with their seed also. Mine like to sort through the dish looking for that special seed. The rest gets spread around the cage bottom or on the floor around the cage. The web site for the American Dove Association is http://www.doveline.com Dave

Dear Ste,
I would recommend Ian Adair's Encyclopedia of Dove Magic. As it has all that you can want. But, I would learn how to handle doves before learning to do magic with them. Geoff Ray |

Geof: Is Ian Adair's Encyclopedia of Dove magic available? Where can I find it?

Mike: I believe most magic dealers carry the encyclopedia of dove magic. This is a 5 volume set and volume 4 is out of print but still available occassionally. A good source for books is Magic by Post at this web site.

You should also try Marian Chavez's Encyclopedia of Dove Magic, it is much more condensed than Ian Adair's Encyclopedia, it depends what you are looking for.

I would still recommend Tony Clark. His material covers both care and handling as well as actual effects. His series is available in both video and book.

Hello,
I hope everybody had a wonderful New Year. 2003, is going to a great year for Dove Workers. If you're new to working with these feathered assistants. Remember to start slow. Try one dove at first. Just to see if this is really your bag. (dove bag) Oh yeah! The General Grant tapes have been put on DVD. Just check with Marty at Martini Magic. He even has a discount price for Café Members. The only thing I found wrong with my DVD was the sound track was off a little. Kind of like an old Japanese Movie, but it didn't affect the lessons taught! Doves need care, good food, fresh water but they thrive on love! Bye Now! Manyfingers ..... kingsnqueens |

kingnqueens: good advice to a beginner. BTW, you may want to contact Marty about the sound track on your DVD. I got one of the first ones out and it wouldn't play at all. I saw Marty at a convention a few days later and he gave me a new one on the spot. I just mailed him back the bad one. Do you have the tapes also? I have both.

Hi Dave,
Yes, I contacted Marty, and he sent another disc out right away. He offers Café Member a discounted price. I don't know Marty Personally, but from what I've seen, he's is a class act. No, Dave I sold my two tape set to a younger dove worker, and I really missed them, I'm just glad that they're availible on DVD. I really tip my hat (tophat of course) to all fine dealer's, inventor's, and performer's we have at the Magic Café! Where I live, it's an all day trip to Dallas, Fort Worth to go to a Magic Shop, or to visit with a fellow magician. The Café is my best source to find out what's good, what's great, and what's not worth spending my money on. I bless Steve & his staff for making this a wonderful place to eat & drink MAGIC! I always tell young magi that the best thing about our art, are the friends we make along the way, and I've been making some great one's (like you, and others) at the Magic Café. Someday I'd like to see the members get together and put together a book of tips, tricks, showmanship, etc., Can you imagine with all the talent we have at the Café, the book we could produce to better our art? I'd buy one! Well, there I go rattling on again. Anyway guy's & gal's keep up the good work, and the next cup's on me...... Manyfingers |
