I would like to know if there are any coin routines out there that use the premise of binary for a prediction and so on.
Example. If I take four coins and say "heads are 1" and then give them to the spectator to toss and line up. He lines them up so... HTHH = 1011 = eleven you reveal the number in one of many ways. The trick I am developing uses sixteen cards delt by the spec. the spec then notes one of the sixteen and puts the stack down. The coins get tossed and the binary number decoded. The stack is then counted to the binary number, the selected card.

Not that I know of Partizan, though a quick check of Karl Fulves self working book might be in order for this sort of math stuff.
On the more artistic side, the I-Ching almost works that way when you use coins. I believe it's heads = 3 and tails = 2 for each line then you add three tosses to get a number for the hexigram. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divination_with_I_Ching

There are many opportunities with this method of using 4 bit binary with coins, the way they are arranged is one advantage, the direction they are read another.
You can then get a seemingly free choice from 1-16 (0-15) for use in many types of magic. Extend the word bit for a greater range ie. use more coins. ie HTHH (eleven) could be read as HHTH = 1101 = Thirteen. So you have a choice of the best number to reveal at.

I'm not certain, but I would be surprised if there wasn't something along these lines in the earlier Max Maven books. There is even an efect called "binary" I believe. Maven certainly has explored the intersection of mentalism and the iching. In most applications of the concept, however, I believe the translation to a binary value is more of the method, than part of the effect.

I am a high school math teacher, and this is all from my personal experiences: most of the students I have taught/tutored wouldn't be able to follow along with a binary intensive trick. I think that as long as you were confident in it, you could give ANY answer for ANY combination and convince most spectators. So, it seems that this would have to be tailored to a particular audience. However, with the right audience, it sounds GREAT, and a nice application for coins. Anyone agree/disagree?

Would this even be entertaining?

Nothing like performing an assembly program using silvers for ones and coppers for zeros, and maybe a coinbox for a register to show ... well what would that show?

How's about this?
You show how a line of copper and silver coins can be interpreted as a series of light and dark lines. The coins are randomly placed on the table. You cover the coins with something momentarily, or just turn out the lights, and they magically assemble into a line. The audience thinks "Hmmm, so what," until you sweep the line with a portable bar code scanner hooked up to your laptop. The readout then reveals the name of the spectator's grandfather. Not binary, I know, but if you think that people will simply assume that your laptop has done all the work for you, you could then discuss the translation of 0's (coppers) and 1's (silver) and reveal that the coins are indicating the number 65, the age the grandfather was when he "crossed over".
