I am pressing the "Log out" link...the page loads and hey presto..I am still logged in.

You probably have too many Magic Café cookies on your computer, Kris. Do a search of your Cookies folder for files "containing text": cafe_autologinuser, and delete all of the files found in this search. You should then be able to log out with no problem.
