Below are my thoughts on this year's KIDabra Conference.
Thinking about the 2006 KIDabra Conference
Conventions are for contests, magic shows, close-up, cards, manipulations, and learning what's new to buy in the world of magic. A Conference is a learning environment where the attendee takes back with them a world of specialized knowledge. The KIDabra conference is a mini-college course in the Art of Entertaining families and children. Having read everything on the http://www.KIDabra.org website, especially the fantastic line-up in the Schedule I am thinking about how I am going to spend my time at KIDabra.
TUESDAY August 15th, 2006 ....
Well, On Monday, August 15 I'll be driving down from NJ to Pigeon Forge, TN so I can get to see the Terry Evanswood Grand Illusion Show on Tuesday morning at 10 AM on the 15th, then get ready for the start of KIDabra Marketing Seminar. On Tuesday Evening Aug 15th, Steve Snyder, the Tax Magician will be informing the membership on how to properly do you taxes as an entertainer. You work hard for the money and you have a right to know how to keep as much as possible legally. I’m sure everyone will learn something here! You will be amazed at what is deductible, included this trip to the KIDabra Conference. It’s a learning experience to improve your trade!
Next will be another favorite of mine. After Steve Snyder is Eddy Wade presenting his complete "How to Teach a Magic Class" . Last year, Ed brought 10 boxes of his how to teach a magic class. He didn’t lecture on it just mentioned he had only 10. All ten were going instantly! And I got one. What a buy… A complete outline and all the tricks he uses for teaching a magic class. I made my own and this year I taught two five week courses, which was much smaller than the one Ed explains. Now this year I get to here all the cool details he has added into this lecture. This is a don’t miss for me… Well, they all are a don’t miss for me! Hearing that lecture will be worth the extra day as well as getting to seeing Terry perform again. (Illusions is another love of mine.)
On Wednesday, it will be a tough decision to make for many; choosing a full day of Marketing Sessions or a full day of Gospel Magic. If you need material for your gospel program or need to start a new program, this is for you.
I am going to the Market day session because, this year’s schedule contains all my favorite entertainers: Greg McMahan, BJ Hickman, Jim Snack and Samuel Patrick Smith
Two years ago, I bought two booklets from Greg McMahan. I never heard of him and as I read these booklets, I realized I had just about every prop he mentioned. I visualized performing these funny routines, I just loved these booklets and found out they were out of print so I considered myself lucky to have found these treasures. Recently Greg came out with a new book and combine many of the routines in these booklets, which I bought from Sammy Smith immediately. Now this year, at KIDabra, Greg’s lecture “Using Your Website to Book Shows” is another one I am looking forward too. Since I design websites, and have my own ideas and concepts, this should prove to be valuable information to increase my shows from the many domains I already have.
Ever since I saw, “The BJ Hickman Magic Show” VHS tape years ago, I knew this guy performed like I do. He is tops as a school show entertainer. We’ve heard the advertising slogan, “When Merrill Lynch speaks everybody listens!” Well, for school show entertainers, “When BJ Hickman speaks everybody should listen!” BJ will reveal the importance of Showcasing your program. If you every wanted to go full time and wanted to get into the schools systems, then this is a must attend lecture. I won’t miss this one!
Please introduce yourself to those around you at these lectures, so when it comes to lunch time (on the house for market day and gospel day attendees) you can join these new friends during the lunch break.
After Lunch, Jim Snack presents the sequel to last year’s lecture. Last year he gave you full details of one of his many ways to make money performing magic. This year, he will give away another secret. These are in his excellent Success-in-Magic books on CD. One of them “64 NEW Ways to Make Magic Pay” describes last years lecture and this year he will describe another. In 62 more years we will have learned them ALL! OR do it the quick way and get his CDS! I love his work and looking forward to this lecture. See http://www.Success-in-Magic.com for more information on Jim's books. TO date, I have not heard of one person who was disappointed in Jim Snacks Materials.
We are in for a treat with Samuel Patrick Smith’s “How to Publish and Sell Your Book”. I want so bad to write and publish a book but I lack the details on how to go about doing it! When I heard this lecture was scheduled, my heart skipped a beat with added excitement. Part of my business plan and life goals is to write a book and now, Sammy Smith is giving me the details on how to do just that.
For me, this year’s Market day schedule is perfect!
WEDNESDAY August 16th, 2006 The KIDabra Auction.
Wednesday Night after dinner, will be the official start with the fantastic and famous KIDabra Auction. Go to http://www.KIDabra.org/Auction.html to see some of the stuff for sale at previous auctions (That sword basket illusion sold for $100 dollars). If you look real close you can see some of the fantastic items for sale. One year I was broke that night and had to find an ATM machine so I could get more money for the rest of the week! Another year, I brought extra money because the auction deals in CASH ONY and I bid on the Vanishing Radio, and won the bid for $300 on a $1,200 item! And it was Brand New!
If you are flying in, bring an empty suitcase because you will need something to pack all the magic and great deals you will come across. I had to buy an extra suitcase one year! Generally, I will be up to the wee hours of the morning so I don’t miss out on such great deals. (Many times these late hours are the better deals because everyone runs out of money!) The cool thing is we can look over all the items and make note of the items we would like to bid on. If you don’t know the value you can ask the people around you and they will be glad to help you. It’s such a friendly atmosphere. Know your low and high bid you are willing to make on an item in advance helps control spending. It's also nice to browse the items before the auction starts.
Gary Shelton, who has played lots of comedy clubs, makes the auction fun and funny.
THURSDAY August 17th, 2006....KIDabra Conference Lectures Begin
The first lecture by Greg McMahan on "Backdrop Designs for Pennies". He will help you with easy to make backdrops. After buying the $1,500 Spider Backdrop and having an extra bag to carry in, I don't always use it. It's to high for many of the homes I do birthday parties so, this lecture should be helpful on quick and easy backdrops.
After Greg, Julian Franklin will lecture on "Educational Significance" of your school programs. Here is a KIDabra regular who has performed in schools for years and really knows why those school shows shoud be educational. I remember from previous lectures that Principals want programs with an educational value, Librarians want increased circulation in books and readerships, and PTA/PTO want family involvement and some want fundraisers. This should prove to be very beneficial to those who want to do shows for schools.
Last year, Trixie Bond did a spectacular performance on her birthday party show. That performance was well received, now this year, Jozo Bozo will perform his "Live Birthday Party Show" (with an audience of children), so we can see another full time pro in action. This helps newcomers in seeing how adding bits of business and having fun with the kids can improve any performance. Skilled professionals should pick up a couple of techniques that is different and useful for their performance.
After Lunch, Eddy Wade will present another hidden secret of his: "How to Theme Your Show for Halloween Success". Since I knew he performed this two years ago, and he told me he had program on it for sale, I pre-ordered it. He really didn't want this secret out, because it served him well and he really didn't want competition. For some reason we are lucky he has a change in "mind". This year he will present that program, which like the Magic Class, will be a don't miss event. I bought the book without any one-on-one instructions than what was provided in the kit. Now I get to hear his thoughts on this program. I know I will enjoy this because I loved his Halloween Program material.
Before Dinner, three KIDabra regulars and powerful speakers will delight the attendees with the importance of character and personality. Bruce Amato, Tim Sonefelt & Barry Mitchell will present: "ELF: Personality Prevails but Character Counts" Learn to incorporate motivational messages into your magic, with a focus on bringing out your own personality in the presentations. The forum is part lecture and part demonstration as Bruce, Barry and Tim present routines that tackle issues on Character traits such as Respect, Peer Pressure and more. Messages in programs really mean extra bucks in your pocket. It appears this program compliments Julian Franklin lecture on educational significance.
For the past 14 years, Duane Laflin has presented 5 Star lectures. Every one a powerhouse and perfected! This year, Duane Laflin presents his 15th Consecutive KIDabra Feature Lecture: "Why I Like These Kid Show Routines". Anyone who has ever seen Duane perform knows his lectures are top-of-the-line lectures by a guy who is unbelievably skilled in his craft. He makes perfect those tough moves with easy methods of doing them. Now I ask you, "Have you every wondered what this amazing magicians favorite kids trick are?" Well be prepared to witness Duane's powerhouse routines. Hopefully he brings enough, because many times his powerhouse routines sell out! Well organized, practical, useful, and presented in an entertaining way. That's probably why he has been coming back for 15 years. Also, his booth and new products are always best sellers and sell outs. I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
After Duane is the Dealer's Show... There are over 25 different dealers, (no repeat items, they all have their own effects) Do you know who Scott Francis is? If not you're in for a real treat. He is a high energy multiple split personalities/characters, that will have you in stitches from laughing so hard. His job is to make sure all the dealers keep to their time limits. He plans months ahead to intertwine his comedy with the dealers personalities and to just have fun, or should I say "KIDabra Fun" which is a unique style of friends having fun with friends. You get to see the latest is new children magic as well have your jaw hurt from laughing so much. Who said conferences were boring? Not at KIDabra! Laughter is the best medicine, so be prepared for an overdose of "silly stuff". Scott Francis is always a treat for the attendees. He sure will make this evening memorable.
FRIDAY August 18th, 2006....KIDabra Conference Lectures Continue
Early Friday Morning BJ Hickman, presents" BJ's Bits of Biz to Bolster Bookings.". Several years ago, BJ was lecturing on marketing and it was well received. I read all his monthly newsletters and like a sponge soak up all he has to say. We all have learned how "Bits of Biz" help our shows, now we get to add "Bits of Biz" to our bookings. In BJ format, this will prove to be an excellent lecture and help increase bookings.
After BJ, comes "The Man with the Success Books" Jim Snack presenting his "Showmanship Secrets for Family Entertainers". Having taken many theater classes in my youth, read every book on the market related to showmanship and magic, there is still much to learn. Showmanship is always on when you are with clients, pre-show, during show and after the show. This is another fantastic lecture on a topic we all need to learn more about. You'll find me here for sure!
Ahhhh we get to meet the pros and their fun loving banter and learn so much from Terry Evanswood & Barry Mitchell. You never know what sparks fly when these two greats get together. The topic: "The Show, The Lecture, The Memory Maker" sounds so inviting. Terry is one of my favorite illusionists and I go a day ahead of the conference just to see him. Barry is always a don't miss performer. Put the two of the together to lecture on "The Show" and "Making Memories" we are bound to go away with the gems of the century. The cool part, laughter increases memory retention, and we will be having lots of that in the KIDabra tradition, Fun, Funny and extremely valuable information.
After Lunch, we get to see Ken Scott's "Live Library Show", with an audience of children, to see the actual effect the show has on the kids. Afterwards we get to hear his comments on that show. I consider Ken to be a life-long distance friend. I'm in New Jersey and he is down south somewhere. If you liked his Birthday Party DVD then you know what you are in for... Libraries are a money maker and many people over look them. They also lead into school shows, and are reputation makers. They are also a means for a summer income. Join me and lets watch Ken together. Maybe he will do his famous Botania production!
After Ken Scout, comes the hard choices: The KIDabra Breakouts, Seven (7) Hands-on Workshops Sessions and we get to choose only two:
- Steve Kissell: Games and Contests for Kids
This funny man and comedian who runs comedy workshops all over the country, will present a don't miss session on adding games and contests to your shows. What a marketing tool to set you apart from the crowd of magicians in your area. Games and contests are big on TV and very appealing. Think of what this can do for your family entertainment comedy act.
- Greg McMahan: Warming Up the Audience
We just don't laugh from the start... we must first prepare the audience on what to expect, get the funny bone working, guild the audience on what they can expect and what they can do before we perform. MCs have been doing that for years.; They build the audience for the next act. You are your own MC, and you must introduce your act to the kids who really need to be told how to participate. This is good information and a must see event.
- Mike Bent: The Worst Case Scenario Survival Guide for Kidshows- How to Deal with Common Kidshow Problems.
Who is Mike Bent? If you don't know, you are in for a real treat. He's creative, really funny, energetic, and know what to do when things go wrong and they do! How your act to them can make or break your image as an entertainer. His advice is immensely valuable. Another don't miss event.
- Carol Collins: Bingo's Bubble Mania Breakout
At KIDabra, we have lots of clowns that do magic in their shows. Want to add bubbles to your show? well be prepared to see what this can do for your clown act. If you are a magician, there are some really good bubble routines out there. Losander, the famous levitation/floating guru, does so amazing bubble magic, so don't think this session is only for clowns.
- Rick Hubbard: An All Kazoo Breakout
Ever since I found out this session was being presented, I had dreams of the kids all using Kazoo during the birthday party humming Happy Birthday. Here is another unique addition to se you apart from the competition. This will prove to be funny and fun session. I don't want to miss this one either.
- Marty & Brenda Hahne: My Four Favorite Show Openers
Whenever Marty and Brenda, perform or lecture, I want to be there. They have always prove to provide powerful information. I got to know what their favorite four routines are! Here's another don't miss session.
What am I to do? They are all don't miss events, and I got to choose only two. It will prove to be the toughest decision I will have to make at the conference, and it won't happen until the last minute before the session. If I could only divide myself into "seven of me" and attend them all. Woe is ME!
Friday Evening is "An Evening of Birthday Party Magic: KIDabra Special Event" where the executive staff present their favorite routines or original routines to the attendee. Like the Christmas and the Halloween event, the KIDabra stars will be sharing Birthday Party Routines, tips and tricks you can use! If you don't have a Birthday Party show, you will after this event.
SATURDAY August 19th, 2006....KIDabra Conference Lectures Continue
Saturday August 19th, 10:00 AM (Optional Ticket charge)- KIDabra goes to Terry Evanswood's Grand Illusion Show
This August, being only 2 blocks from The Country Tonight Theatre, KIDabra goes to see Terry on his 10th Anniversary in Pigeon Forge. Also celebrating partnering 20 years with his chief assistant Tammy, he's pulling out the stops with all new material, combined with some of the best loved routines long since retired from the early years.
As an optional event, during the conference we'll make time for the entire group to go over and see the show. It's a lesson in everything right about performing and a lesson of the essence of KIDabra! Stay tuned price info coming. It's a Feature Don't You Dare Miss Event! We did this 5 years ago and it remains one of the most incredible and talked about KIDabra events ever, this time it's even better!
Don't miss Terry Evanswood and Tammy in the Grand Illusion Show at the Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge A Magical Don't Miss Highlight!
Even though I see Terry twice every year, I am looking forward to this event.
After the Illusion show and lunch, David Kaye will present the importance of Running Gags. Those who use this in their show know each time, it gets funnier, and a worthwhile addition into any act. I don't miss any of David's Lectures.
After Silly Billy, we again are treated to creations by Steve Axtell. We will be amazed at the wonderful puppets he will present, Truly a visit with Steve is always a KIDabra don't miss event.
After Steve and from overseas we are blessed with Trevor Lewis' presence. He will be discussing "An Afternoon of Party Pieces". If you own any of his DVD or VHS tapes, you know you are in for some great funny bits.
Before, we end the conference, we conclude with the Annual KIDabra Gala Show.
The KIDabra Conference always closes with a powerhouse Gala Show Saturday night see: http://www.kidabra.org/Gala.html for some past pictures. Lots of surprises that night. Then a mad dash to the dealer room for those last minute items I put off. That is after I pre-register for the 2006 KIDabra. Mark will tell you the details on that.
Some where's in this mix there will be lots of prizes given out, fine dining, late night sessions with the Pros, a few harmless pranks, many calls home to my family (I will miss them), maybe a dip in the pool, or should I say "LIVE Free Willy" or "Beached Whale" performance, packing for the 14 hour ride back home, meeting old friends, meeting new friends, purchasing the Audio Marketing CDs and any other DVD I find interesting, overspending my credit card, planning for 2007, throwing my clothes out so I can bring home more stuff in my suitcase, opps, I'm driving so that won't be a problem this year, taking lots of pictures, and helping KIDabra out in any way I can.
I'll be looking forward to meeting you at KIDabra, if you're attending, if not, check out the Invisible Registrant and at least hear the best on CDs and hope to see you in 2007.

Yes, you are correct, however, Terry Evanswood performs in Pigeon Forge all year. See: http://www.terryevanswood.com/showcalendar.htm
I enjoy Terry's performance so much, I make it a point to see him twice when I'm at Pigeon Forge. Prior to the Conference and Market Night, that Tuesday Morning, prior to registering, I am going to see his normal 10:00 AM illusion show.
This year he will be doing something a little different for KIDabra, and add some illusions for the Saturday Morning KIDabra Special illusion show.
Each year, I had to give up one or two morning lectures, just to see Terry's show a second time. I am happy I don't have to do that this year because it's on the KIDabra schedule.
The last time Terry pereformed for KIDabra, there were lots of added fun and laughter. Terry and Barry Mitchell, who lives close by, are best of friends. They are teaming up for a KIDabra event as well as this Special KIDabra Sataurday Illusion show. They are a funny pair, and I wouldn't miss that for anything!

I'm going a few days in advance to take the family around town. Once the conference starts I told them I'll disappear during the day going to every class that I can. It's finally here.

Dennis, I regret that I will miss this year's conference due to essential family obligations. The decision has transformed me into a cranky, ill-tempered ogre lightened slightly by spending some of my KIDabra reserve on new Barry Mitchell products! Oh yeah!
I'll miss everyone...although, since I will be in Asheville on the 19th and 20th, I may drive on over to Pigeon Forge and crash the party for a few hours Friday night. Have fun...guard that checkbook...and don't scratch your nose while The Kernal is auctioneering!!!
And would someone PLEASE keep an eye on Ken Scott this year!!!!

What?!?!?! Replace THE BOTANIA of POWER?!?!?! Can this be? Why...you might as well replace the Statue of Liberty with a sculpture of Anna Nicole Smith and a plaque that reads "Ollie Ollie Oxen Free!" You might as well replace the Libery Bell with a Liberty Party Horn! You might as well replace the White House with a House of Pancakes!!
It's sacrilege! Sacrilege, I say!!!
I'll miss youse guys!!

For those who are new to KIDabra, Ken Scott bid $400 for a very sick looking Botania, playing a pratical joke on the Staff. Well this Botania has become a legend and the opening and closing moment for KIDabra. Each year it starts off with a funny bit and ends saying farewell to this sick looking botania. I got to get pictures of it this year!

I liked just about everything at Kidabra 2005, but the break out sessions. With everyone in the same room at the same time made it difficult to concentrate and sometimes hear the lecturer. The breakout sessions where still good but I think they could be better in seperate rooms.
Thanks and have a Magical day.

I assume you meant 2006, and I agree - that was a bit distracting at times, but I still enjoyed the sessions quite a bit. I want to the Marty Hahne & Mike Bent sessions, and they were both great.
