I think there is a difference between a "retirement home" and a "retirement community," and therein may lie the rub in our discussion, folks.
A reitrement home is much like a hospital or in-patient clinic setting, where the residents are given everything from around the clock nursing care to 24-hour medical supervision and hospice, whereas a retirement community is more of a place where fully functional senior citizens retire to spend their days with those of like ages and interests and where assistance IS available, but not a requirement. Some retirement communities are single building settings, like an apartment complex, others are literally communities, with individual dwellings, whereas a retirement home is almost always a hospital-like setting. The community situations can range from being professionally managed, with membership requiring the signing over of income to the community management (at least Social security and possibly other income streams) or a mortgage of some sort, whereas a managed care facility (a home) requires the attachment of assets as a standard proceedure for admission. The admission-model homes have come under fire recently for "gouging" the elderly and for providing seriously substandard care in a number of states while the management of these facilities have allegedly pocketed large profits at the same time. The trick here is to choose your venue well. Charity organizations, historically, do NOT have big budgets to pay performers with, as a general rule. Private organizations may or may not have. So do your homework before you quote and charge the ones who can afford a professional rate a professional fee. And charge the ones who can't a charitable rate. Lee Darrow, C.H.

You are right Lee.
That is why I named one of the places I did shows, Leisure World, and also specified “communities', so people would know what I was tal;king about. I think some folk just like to be contrary. |
