Hey Bill,
LR was a lot of fun ...
I get such joy from performing and I really enjoy working for the world's hardest audience ... other magicians!

Since you started this topic, I will ask a question Danny.
How did you and Robert come up with the idea of LVMI and then Mindvention?
Why do them when there were other conventions abounding?
BTW, you guys have put on two GREAT MINDventions!! It is my loss this year to not be in attendance. I will be there in spirit though.

Hey Sam,
I first met Robert Allen when he contacted me to lecture and help with a big convention he was producing in Leadville, CO called Magic in the Rockies … he had big names (Daryl, Michael Finney, Christopher Hart, Ice McDonald etc)… he was doing a big convention in a small town … after doing two of these (and losing money both years), he said he was done and throwing in the towel convention-wise …
I told him that I thought the problem was location … Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the US, over 10,000 feet above sea level … the dove workers had problems as the doves could barely fly! …
I told him you live in Las Vegas the magic capital of the world, instead of doing a big convention, why not try a small convention focusing in on close-up magic (Which is the style of magic that most hobbyists do) …
Now Robert is not well-known to the community but he has worked in Vegas doing comedy magic for 35 years … the big show is what he knew and was most familiar with …
Close-up was outside of his comfort zone, but not outside mine … after years of booking lectures with the Magicians Lecture Network and lecturing around the world myself, the close-up world was very familiar to me …
So Robert suggested we hook up and try and do a close-up convention, and LVMI was born … we survived the first year battling the first Magic Live!, which plopped down two weeks before our convention and then the 911 tragedy occurred 3 days before our start on 9/14 …
LVMI continued to grow and impress attendees and critics with our fantastic talent line-up and the best convention hang and jamming anywhere …
After a few years of LVMI we decided to look at the market and think about the possibility of producing a second convention … I looked around and realized that mentalism, a very topical and exciting specialty, was not being offered to the community at all …
Except for the PEA (Psychic Entertainers Association), which was restricted for only members of that group, there was NO convention dedicated to mentalism …
And so MINDvention was born … the first two where fantastic in content and acceptance from a very discriminating audience and we have high hopes for our third outing this November …
I got an e-mail yesterday that at least 4 (and perhaps a few more); enthusiasts from Australia will be joining mentalism fans from around the world in Las Vegas for three days of education, entertainment and enlightenment on this most fascinating topic …
PS We will miss you Sam and you will be with us in spirit ...

Actually Robert Allen's convention was called Rocky Mountain Magic Convention so that it wouldn't be confused with the very successful Magic in the Rockies(TM) convention that is held each year in Fort Collins, Colorado. (Originally, Magic in the Rockies was held in Estes Park, Colorado, but it has been in Fort Collins for quite a few years now.)
Robert's line-up was great, but his convention was hurt by the obscure location and poor timing.
Sorry about the nit-picking...

Danny,
I am very new to magic to spite my advanced age. I have had the opportunity to attend the last two LVMI conventions and I absolutely loved it. Thank you for putting such an amazing experience together... You inspire so many of us and the convention is AWESOME! You have always booked the best magicians!!! Keep up the good work.

Thanks again ... LVMI is a labor of love and comments like these make me smile from ear to ear ... next year we will have to compete with MAGIC Live (although now we are ahead of them instead of 2 weeks after them)... so if close-up and cabaret magic is your thing, please consider attending the 2007 LVMI ...
