The Trickery: I recently purchased something from The Trickery under their 10% off sale with free shipping. Although 10% isn't super exciting it is welcome and forced me into a purchase commitment that I would normally have waited on. In other words it worked as a marketing promotion for them.
Hocus Pocus: Like many of you I regularly get the Hocus Pocus sales events emails and they are always tempting. The problem is that nearly everthing I want is "not subject to additional discounts or promotions" and that is frustrating. I prefer when they send out a plain 'ole list of what is on sale. What I really would like is a way to view ONLY items that are subject to the discount. Maybe an extra web button or a link in the sale email "Discountable items". I know I would buy more from them if I could browse only items subject to the sale. Mr Humble (Diamond): sends out a list of items and if you really want that 50% you have to purchase 3 items of any value, etc. It's kind of funny to buy an extra set of packet tricks to save hundreds on an expensive item. Tilford has a club membership fee that provides a discount. I suspect many do not join until their first purchase with them. Please share your thoughts on other dealers and their clever marketing likes and dislikes. I ask that no one Flame a dealer in this thread so it does not get deleted. I would think that stating general likes and dislikes of their marketing would be helpful to us all, Just some good old opinions of dealer talk. Not the "I never got an email back from...." stories please. We have heard plenty of them. Hopefully the Dealers will read and heed this thread!

Both PenguinMagic and MJM Magic have 10% discount codes that are given after your first order with them. It might also be worth mentioning that they both provide free shipping

Shipping and Handling policies and charges are something I always notice.
One thing I like very much about Stevens Magic is their postage/shipping policy. Every item is priced with the shipping charges built in, so if I want to place a small order for something like a DVD, I'm only paying about $3.00 for p/h. L&L Publishing has free shipping, so I don't mind ordering a single item from them. I almost always go to Stevens or L&L when placing a small order, and I tend to place a lot of small orders rather than large ones. So, their s/h polices have encouraged me to place more orders - I don't think it's fair for a company to try to make a profit on s/h. More and more on ebay, it seems sellers are sneaking in large s/h charges to pad their profit margins. Ron Reid |

Shipping charges are getting trickier and trickier with the increase in fuel costs. Just yesterday I shipped a P&L Aerial Fishing to San Diego, CA. A couple of years ago that would have cost me about $2.00 by Priority Mail, with the Postal Service's popular 2 Days, 2 Pounds, 2 Dollars promotion. I posted a shipping charge of $12.00 on my ad. The shipping, with confirmation came to $11.55. That's how badly costs have increased.
What bothers me about shipping is, for example, an eBay seller in Michigan who sold a DVD, listed a shipping cost of $7.00 and then sent it by Media Mail at a cost of 39 CENTS. Now, that is wrong. The other day I bought two items which amounted to one playing card and one gimmicked half dollar. The invoice showed a shipping charge of $17.00!!! When I complained, the seller dropped it to $12.00 and, again, I received it in an envelope by First Class Mail with less than one dollar postage. It's those types of deals that are wrong. If you are going to charge a high shipping charge, then provide the commensurate service. I agree, sellers should not profit on shipping charges. I love Stevens' mailings, but I think the $5.00 coupon is kind of silly. I also very much like dealing with Hocus Pocus, but agree that usually the very best and most interesting items are exempt from the discounts. But then, discounts rarely sway my decision to purchase an item anyway. |

Hocus Pocus recently had an inventory blowout sale that had some excellent vhs tapes going for $ 1.99 a piece. Granted, they were not DVD's but it was still one of the best bargains I've seen in a long time.

Yeah, I bought the first volume of "Art of Astonishment" from Penguin. They had it discounted to $35, I got the 10% discount, and the free shipping. When it arrived -- first class -- I saw that the mailing label said it cost $6.66 to ship. So for $32 I got it in about a week, which seemed like a great deal.

The Magic Depot (magic.org) is always sending me 25% off or 50% off offers, and I appreciate them. They are up front about shipping, and what is on sale, etc. I have never had a problem with them.
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Paul does not have a store. You have to be on his e-mail list. I am sorry but I can not remember his e-mail.

I am from Canada, so the Free Shipping realy saves me a LOT of money.
So I can sometimes save up to $10 just because of the shipping cost. |

The DVD itself might've been worth $20 used, but if it was advertised with a $10 shipping charge, more often than not, the bidding would max out at $10. On the other hand, if the seller offered free shipping, the bidding might've ended at $20. The buyer still pays the same price for for the same DVD. Also, it is worth mentioning that by having higher shipping costs on eBay, sellers pay less "ending-price" fees to eBay, which saves them money. This is one of the reasons why sellers are so tempted to have higher shipping costs, not to weasel money out of unsuspecting buyers. |

I'll just admit it... I'm a sucker for free shipping! When I am on a budget, I hate calculating things out and noting that there is an additional annoying fee I gotta pay!
On a side note, regarding making profits from shipping, I did an e-commerce project and met with a multi-millionare pro. He wrote and sold books on how to be successful. He said the following, (an almost perfect quote) "...the books cost about $2-3 dollars each to print. My book X, for example is $17.99, it is 254 pages, and I charge $5 for shipping. Not only do I make a 100% profit from the book, I make a couple extra bucks on each one I ship..." What a world. Derek Merdinyan |

I'd have to also put in my recommendation for Penguin - they provide awesome customer service, are affordable, and have such fast shipping. I'd give them my business on my day-to-day purchases!

A list of what's on sale (except for their occasional inventory clearances and estate sales) during one of their normal 25%-off deals (25% off, buy one get one at 1/2 price, etc.) would be similarly massive. I do like your idea, though, of a button that allows you to browse ONLY discountable items. Sounds like a major managerial headache, though. --Josh |
