One thing I have noticed about many magicians, and especially gospel magicians, is that they rarely share routines. You see it all the time, while one person shares, hundreds read, take the info and don't give back. While I do understand this if you are a full time magician and/or make your living as a magician, I feel many, like me, use magic to teach with or on a limited basis. We have all created a patter for a routine, and it's about time we consider sharing with others. I want to encourage everyone that once a year(your birthday would be a good time), share one routine with someone. I don't travel much, only teach Sunday school, but what God has given me in ideas for patter, I share, and these ideas are being used around the world at this time. By sharing, the blessings God has given me are being shared. So right now, even though it is not my birthday, I want to share a routine to start the sharing. I challenge you all to step up and share.

You need two ropes, one ten feet long and one four feet long, and a change bag. Load the four foot rope in the bag. Bring up a helper, and use the ten foot rope with you holding onto one end and the helper holding the other.

A story told by Rabbis is that we are tied to God by a cord. Everytime we sin (do something against the law), we break that cord and pull away from God. (Cut the rope and tie it back together. You'll do this three or four times.) But as we turn back to God, he ties that rope back together so we are bound with him again. Our sins (Cut again), and the subsequent returning to the teachings of God, bring us closer to God. (Put the ten foot rope with the knots in the change bag, and make the switch to the four foot rope. Pull the rope out, and as you hold one end and the helper holds the other, you say, "We are closer to God because as a cord is broken and tied back together and mended by God the cord is shorter. Our experiences and failures bring us closer to God as we learn and grow and know him."

This could be used to teach a lesson on God's forgiveness, facing the challenges in life and gaining wisdom, or what else? You come up with other ideas this simple routine could be used to illustrate.

Hope this is useful,

Simple and easy to do - that is so nice! But more than that, a great way to teach a simple, important message, visually. Thanks again!

Many Blessings!!

I appreciate you intentions of spurring the rest of us to share more. I was thinking about starting a thread entitled The Good, The Bad, and The Gospel, since I have not seen too much decent gospel effects.

Not a separate patter/routine, but an alternate approach to what you shared. There are a number of multi-cut and restored rope effects that could accomplish what you said, but w/o the change bag. In particular, I think of the Panama Rope trick. You make 3 cuts/ties, and then it is restored to one piece. I modified this so that all 3 knots will pop-off right in front of the audience - pop, pop, pop.

I have likened the cuts to man's sin, the tieing back together to man's self effort to restore the relationship w/God. Then say that only the blood of Christ can truly restore that relationship, pop, pop, pop.

I have also done this by likening the cuts to offenses to others, and the only way to restore those relationships is to ask for forgiveness, pop, pop, pop.

The Panama Rope trick is taught in Tarbell 2, Daryl's Rope dvd, and other places. To get the knots to pop-off required a small variation in the cutting and the tieing.

I think that sharing patter ideas is a good one.

Here's one I came up with, you'll need:

1.flash paper
2.dove pan
3.pencil and paper
First write the word Heaven on a small piece of paper and tape it in the load of the dove pan. Next write hell on a piece of flash paper.
the presentation is that before you become a christian you are going to Hell.(put flash paper in empty dove pan)But when you become a christian you are going to end up in heaven. light flash paper then put top on pan and show it to the audience.

My son goes to Eden Christian Academy here in Pittsburgh and once he told his friends I do magic they request something all the time. I carry Dicey Dots - by Daryl. I show the regular die and pass it around to the kids explaining that the dots represent our sins. When I do the switch of the die I place the die with the dots removed into one of their hands and have them close thier hand. I then produce the blank "wand" and talk about how it represents Christ and how he was pure, no sins. Then I talk about how Christ died for our sins and how he took the sins of the world onto himself for our redemption. Showing the dots appearing on the "wand" and when they open their hand they find the dots(sins) have been removed(forgiven).

I use the linking rubber bands all the time. It's a quick but mind-boggling illusion. I show the bands connected and talk about how sin traps us and we can not escape it and its penilty on our own. But (now do the move)...through the Cross of Christ, we can be set free.
Those of you that know the trick will understand the visual aspect of the cross.

Hey Rick,
I've been meaning to thank you for leading by example as you continue to send material to The Voice magazine.

In fact, I was recently browsing the PDF collection of old Conjurers that Mike Stenberg compiled. Using the search function in Adobe Reader, you can quickly search half a century of old routine ideas. Some of them may need a bit of polishing but lots of good seed thoughts are there.

Anyway, I found an old trick cartoon that you had published in the Nov/Dec 1995 issue. It's the one where Santa changes into the Nativity. Very simple yet clever too. I'd like to rerun it in the Winter edition of Chalk Illustrated, with your permission. Was this an original idea. Got any more where that came from?

Best regards,
Kerry Kistler

Rick, thanks for starting this thread. I think a lot of time we don't share gospel routines is because a lot of times (myself included) we post something like this: What gospel patter can I use for "Chen Le Water Suspension" for an example.

A lot of people may not use "Chen Le Water Suspension" so they wouldn't have a patter for it.

Or we might post something like this: What trick can I use to talk about Noah and the ark? If this is not in our arsenal, sometimes it's hard to help someone out.

But I like your idea of just sharing a routine and patter that we already use. We can all get new ideas from this.

I'll be posting one soon.

If you want to see my version of the Chen Lee Water Suspension (even though the camera did not pick up my color changing wand)- just go to www.youtube.com and put "Chen Lee Water Suspension" into the search box. Roger Magic Bus Whoops, no Gospel illustration with it, but we filmed this in one take at the end of one of our Saturday afternoon filming sessions for www.ChristianMagician.org on a lark- it turned out to one of my favorite little bits of business (and is the only time I've ever done it). It's a great trick- inspired by Jeff McBride who put this same simple water suspension trick on one of his teaching DVDs.

I love this idea, too bad this thread was inactive for 5 years - here's hoping it stays active!

I'll do my part to contribute, although I am definitely pretty new to this.

I like to use "Three-ropes-into-one" (I think I've heard it called "Patriotic Ropes" too? With 3 different colours) to illustrate the Trinity, to show how God is Three Persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), but is still ONE God.

Also, a mentor of mine showed me how he uses A-B-C Blocks to show how sin comes between Man and God, but the blood of Christ covers our sin and takes it away (Sin being the "B" block, obviously). Then, naturally, you show the "sin" taken away from us. I love this effect, though I am sure it's probably not entirely original!

Of course, there are so many others, anyone else care to share?

Based on a routine by Dan Harlan (based on the domino principle) where performer has 10 different pairs of mismatched gloves. The basic routine was 9 volunteers take one pair each (from a bag) and leave one for him. Everyone links hands so that matching gloves connect (there is one pair of each colour). And he gets them to form a circle - will end up with a missing link. Performer then removes the remaining gloves and outs them on and the colours complete the circle.

Note that my style may be different as I prefer a longer message (at least a mini sermon)

My routine is done where the gloves I use (and dyed) have a colored band around them. I use some contrasting colours but at the same time each main colour will have gloves of a different shade. So for eg. dark blue, purple, light blue ....

I do this at the end of a show where I get 9 volunteers to come up take a pair, leave me one and as they do the basics, I tell them and the audience a story - basically creation, all made in God's image,(the common colored band - image of God), yet all unique (differnt coloured gloves) Yet, we have things in common features etc (shades)... and we are the product of our parents DNA (since each pair would be different)

Talk about sin entering the world, - a common problem affecting all (coloured bad) and how we all want to unite to do something to make the world a better place (joining hands, uniting - common links etc) * many non Christians just like Christians want to make the world a better place. *

But no matter how we try, we can never complete the circle - missing link etc...

God also wanted to reunite us to him etc, (it is here I wear a different kind of gloves - visibly different colour, type, texture etc.) ... but despite being God, he could not! As we could not identify with him etc. So to solve the problem God sent his son Jesus who took human form etc (taking the final pair of gloves from the bag and putting it on covering the other pair) . How Jesus is both 100% God and 100% man etc. And the circle is complete.

Then a quick summary, challenge and prayer ....

Many Blessings!!

This is my Mirror Box effect using many black spongeballs teaching a lesson on sin and forgiveness. This lesson is for kids who already know Jesus as their personal Savior, but may have some unconfessed sin in their heart. It could be incorporated into a salvation message as well if edited a little bit.

I show the mirror box to be empty by opening the lower door, then I close the door. I show the kids many black spongeballs and tell them each spongeball represents a different sin. I ask the kids to name some sins.

For example, one will say stealing. I pick up a spongeball and tell the kids this spongeball represents the sin of stealing and how we shouldn't steal things that don't belong to us. I open the top lid of the mirror box and drop the spongeball inside. Another kid will name a sin and I follow the same steps. After about 10 spongeballs are inside the mirror box, I close the lid.

I continue the lesson how Jesus covered every sin we ever committed by dying on the cross and shedding his blood for each of us. I then place a handkerchief over the mirror box representing Jesus covering all our sins. I read the verse in I John 1:7 that says "the blood of Jesus, God's son, cleanseth us from all sin." I read I John 1:9 that says, "if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all our sin."

I explain to the kids that when we confess our sins, the bible says in Psalms 103:12 that "as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our sins from us." I remove the handkerchief from the mirror box and open the lower door to show our sins are removed.

Hey, Ethan, I use something like this and it works great. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've learned that if you roll the paper with 'Heaven' on it, into a small ball, palm it, you can show the flash paper with 'Hell' on it, pretend to wad it up but actually literally just wrap it around the palmed ball of regular paper and light the flash stuff, it burns so quickly that the regular paper doesn't have a chance to burn. I toss the whole thing a couple of feet in front of me as it 'poofs', catch it and unroll the regular paper with 'Heaven' on it and it appears it changes right before their eyes. Very convincing. Leaves any props out and is very strong to lay audiences.

Tbaer, I love the Mirror Box routine you've got there!

Tonight I just used my mirror box and square circle together. The Mirror Box is to vanish all the treasures we store up on earth (Money, Cars [keys], jewelry, Toys), because we can't take them with us to heaven.

Then the Square Circle is to symbolize all the eternal rewards God wants to give us. Tonight I used a $20 bill in the mirror box, then produced 10 $20 bills from the SC to show that God blesses us 10-fold and 100-fold (I didn't have 2 grand cash on me, unfortunately LOL). Then I talk about how there will be a feast in heaven and produce all kinds of food. Then I like to finish by showing it empty one last time, and then pulling a bottle of water out to symbolize the eternal life that God gives us.

The kids loved it!

I have enjoyed this thread, but my experience with gospel magicians conflicts with the very first sentence. The gospel magicians I've been around, and have tried to be myself, is that they are very willing to share ideas and routining ideas. Sure there are some that they keep to themselves that are "their act," but for the most part the heart of the gospel performer is that of sharing to help spread the gospel.

I'm curious if that isn't the experience of others.

Now as for the statement about there not being very much good gospel magic out there...I think it is fair to say that there isn't very much gospel magic out there...not that it is good or otherwise...from the perspective of magician. Because the market for the "gospel magic" that is out there seems to be non-magicians...pastors, church school teachers, etc.

However, if there were say a "Chance Wolf" level of effects available for Gospel Magicians...would there be enough buyers? The answer I truly believe is "no" because there aren't any out there. Even Andre Kole who has his three ball effect...which many of us have...if that were really successful...then he'd have more products like that available.

So that's my take on this premise. However, routines/ideas...I think gospel magic beats all other forms of magic in their willingness to share. (witness the ideas so far in this tread)

Are you looking for clean, simple, short family audience jokes that have some up to date references (e.g. computers were invented when this book was written)? There are a ton of joke books at your local book store, but I recently ran across a very good one with many short jokes in it that could easily be incorporated into a magic act. It is written for I'd say for the middle school age group, but I found many of the jokes included to be very funny and useable.

It is the "Jokelopidia" (published in 2000 and 2006), The 2nd Edition, Even Biggester and Silliester!, compiled by Ilana Weitzman, Eva Blank, Alison Benjamin and Rosanne Green, published by Workman Publishing in New York, www.workman.com I bought the book for $11.95 (full cover price) at The Teacher's Center in Portage, Michigan.

The above book is 279 pages long and contains thousands of simple jokes and some short articles about joke making and comedians. Examples: Q: How can you get four suits for a dollar?" (other than at Joseph A. Bank) A: Buy a deck of cards. Q: What did the fisherman say to the magician? A: "Pick a cod, any cod." Q: What do you get when you cross Cinderella with a rabbit? A: A: A hare ball. Q: Why couldn't the magician find a deck of cards? A: They got lost in the shuffle.

Here's some classic patter for the Silk Vanish (with a TT), but I guess you could use it with 20th Century Silks as well. I actually vanish the silk twice, and the second time it appears back in the little drawstring bag I keep it in.

1. Taking the silk out of the bag (with TT) and showing bag empty:
The old saying goes,"If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, its yours forever. If it dosent, then it was never meant to be."

2. Tucking the silk into fist:
Love is like this silk handkerchief. The more you grab and grasp and cling and clasp, the smaller it gets.

3. Revealing first vanish:
Until there's nothing left at all.

4. Reaching into the air and making a fist:
But when you learn to give and and serve and share...

5. Pulling silk out of fist:
Love grows as a fruit of the Spirit.

6. Tucking silk back into fist:
It's only natural to search for love and selfishly hold on...

7. Revealing second vanish:
...and love may seem to disappear.

8. Pulling silk from drawstring bag:
The truth is that we can only love, because God first loved us.

The Gospel magicians I have known, have been very open and helpful.
If you are a member of the FCM, there is a wealth of free online information.

I too use the CMH/rubber bands.
As a tie in I use silly bandz from Life Ways,or other Christian book store. The line I use at the end...and the truth shall set us free. Prior to that I talk about how we are bound by fear, anxiety....

If you are in the Kansas City area, tomorrow I will be sharing at the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. We meet in Shawnee, Kansas ..2nd Saturday 10 AM.
Topic-Warming up....for your audiences and for yourself. I will start a separate topic in this section after the mini workshop.

Yes, I agree and that follows my journey.
First I used things verbatim/as written...then I tweaked things to more fit my venues and personality...and then and then and then...

started from scratch..(of course even starting from scratch I am influenced by the readings in and out of magic...as well as things I have seen in movies, plays, songs ...)

Someone else posted this on the Café several years ago, here's an out line that you can do with you favorite silk vanish (easily done with a TT) and scriptures on sin, and forgiveness.

show a white hank to represent our life, we tend to think of ourselves as basically good..
but it doesn't take much before you get a "spot" on it, introduce a black silk (for sin)
while the white hank is draped over my fist, I stuff the black silk into my fist, as I talk about how some people try to deal with sin in their life.. some try to hide it (as it is completely tucked into my fist), but its still there.
Then I introduce a red silk, place it over my fist, and talk about how Jesus's blood covers our sins, but it does more than just covers the sins, His blood removes our sin-guild, and leaves us forgiven/clean/white, as I remove the red silk and show the black silk has vanished.

I don't know how many of you saw Duane Laflin's "Tribute" lecture (lecture notes available at www.LaflinMagicStore.com)- Duane also featured two new Gospel magic tricks which he has made available on separate short one trick DVDs. One is the "FAITH" card trick similar to his earlier "What Color Is Your Bible" release. This is a great trick with an excellent message- and you can use jumbo cards for stage (which Duane also sells) or regular cards. Another neat trick is his "Truth or Lie" card trick (again- can use jumbo or regular sized cards)- comes also with an excellent Gospel application at the end. So you can use these tricks in any kind of setting. Highly recommended- I did the "FAITH" trick this morning in my adult Sunday School class and it went over gangbusters. Very perplexing, and a great message. I tied it into another five letter word (after first using FAITH) G-R-A-C-E, (God's Righteousness At Christ's Expense) and tied it into Colossians 3:15-16.

I also got the opportunity to visit Emory Williams traveling magic shop in a jammed out camper last week in Kalamazoo- Emory was a prior lecturer at the 2006 FCM convention. I bought from him his fine "Predestination" effect which can be easily modified for a number of other messages. He also sold me the appearing giant wood pole- which fits in very well with his lecture notes from the 2006 FCM convention (which he still sells) with a nice routine based on the "speck in your brother's eye while ignoring the beam in your own eye" from Matthew. Just something I mentioned at Duane's Ring 211 lecture, any time I do a "spelling trick" I always say in the beginning "Here is a spellbinding trick" so when I later spell out either a number or a word, I remind them I told them first it was a "spellbinding" effect!
