I always carry a TT and a small silk. A pack of bicycle cards and 4 coins of a style depending on which country I am in. With these a show can always be given.

Level 1:
Standard deck of Bikes in a Porper clip and the Amazing Jumping Arrow. Always. Level 2: (When I'm wearing my Scott-e-Vest, which is almost always.) The above, plus: Malini bag (loaded). One of the best effects in magic. Sharpies (black and silver). Labeling your beverage at an outing. Can possibly be used for magic also... Ropes for Fiber Optics. A wonderful, wonderful routine by Richard Sanders. Coin purse containing five Kennedy halves, Kennedy expanded s****, English penny, Chinese coin, and a silk. (Harlan's Rising Dough & Roth's "Perfected Coin Through Handkerchief.) At least one squeaker, preferably several (in case of giveaway). Third Degree Burn (I perform this in several completely different presentations, depending on whether I feel like using a force or not, and whether I feel like using flash paper or not.) TT (one to three). Required by law, although I don't really use them -- yet. Level Three (when I feel like it): All of the above plus a Zippo, flash paper, and a random item or two I may have been fiddling with recently. I have to say, of all the items I carry, I get the most mileage out of that little squeaker. I use it in public whenever it occurs to me, and it gets the best reactions out of adults and children alike. I don't do it as a magic trick -- just a little something unexpected. I think people like that. I bought 144 on Ebay for cheap. The next-most-used item is the Amazing Jumping Arrow. It's always ready, fun and easy to perform, highly visual, quick, and never gets a yawn. With just the contents of my pockets, I was able to perform in a street fair with a couple of other magicians. We took turns performing, and we went for seven hours, gathering pretty nice crowds. It was a ton of fun. And I only did three effects, for the most part, all day. Then another three or four that I did just a few times, for people who hung out a long time, or people who left and came back with friends. |

Leland up there asked an interesting question:
Quote:
...knowing WHY you decided on what you carry would be most beneficial. What is it that drives your choices? Routining drives what I carry, and what I carry drives my routining. I try to use each item three times in a carefully plotted routine. For example, I carry a 3-foot length of cored rope. Of course I do C&R, and I do a ring on rope. (I'm still looking for the third rope effect.) The ring on rope uses a handkerchief for cover, so I added Quicksilver and Freefall (from Fulves) to reuse the handkerchief. If no one wants to volunteer a ring, I use the bang ring from the dime & penny, which are also used as the base for three coin tricks. Etc. All of these are in my Altoids tin, except for the handkerchief. With a small packet trick wallet, a (stacked) deck of cards, and my Altoids tin, I can perform 32 effects which are routined to create an entertaining and coherent 90 minute show. Of course, I have NEVER done the whole 90 minutes in one sitting! But I keep track of which of my friends have seen which bits, so I always have material I can do. The short version is, I go for mileage. But I try to make sure each effect has a solid impact, and that they routine well with a good story/presentation.

I usually carry three old-style English pennies and a pair of dice. These things are always with my loose change that I pick up and pocket as I am going out the door. These are the only "props" I carry with me on any given day, and I've carried them so long that they really don't seem like props to me at all...

It depends. Usually I have some coins and a silk for vanishing or penetrating quarter through handkerchief. Sometimes I carry a TT, a hot rod, and occassionally Scotch and Soda or Gen Grant 5 to 1 bill transpo.

Also a notebook and pen so I can engage in what Psychologists call "Naturalistic Observation" or in laymen's terms people watching without the people knowing your watching. someone may say something that leads to a great story or patter line.

I carry:
thumb tip, Beswitched gaffed bill, bite coin (quarter), dime and penny, and Kundalini (placed on last minute). I try to stay as impromptu as possible, using sleight of hand based routines with various objects (i.e. muscle pass with a flat rock; transposition with napkins; or mathemagic prediction ending in grey elephant, but touching an object in our surrounding's that is grey, etc...) Thank you to everyone who has added their insight. |

I wear my necklace, rubber bands on the right wrist, a deck of my cards, my business card case, 4 silver half dollars, and a TT, in my right pocket. My wallet and a pen in my left pocket. Jumbo silver coin in the left back pocket.
In my car I keep my brochures, extra business cards, and extra decks of my playing cards to give to a client if I happen to sell myself while I am out and about. I try not to overload myself with props as I am not out to do an entire close up show but just enough to whet their appetite. I always try to subscribe to the less is more approach.
