O.K. I'm a bit confused-
I know Burling "Volta" Hull was the originator of the Svengali deck (amongst many other things)
Who was R.W. Hull? Is he the Same person as Ralph Hull?
I also seem to remember refferences to a Hull Brothers magic shop or printing company somewhere in the one of the books I read.
Was Burling Volta Hull related to the other Hulls? I mentioned.
Hullo?.....

Hull Brothers sold magic out of Fort Recovery, Ohio in the 1940-1960's. They were not the same as Burling Hull. I am not sure if Raplh Hull was one of the brothers. I believe so but not sure.

Here is the bio of both Ralph and Burling Hull (no relation) from Whaley's Who's Who in Magic. Hope this clears up any confusion and sheds some more light on both men.
Regards, Mark
Hull, Ralph W.
(Deavertown, Ohio: 5 Jul 1883-20 May 1943) Inspired at age 6 seeing neighbor & amateur, Col. Gray, do a coin trick. Debut at age 20 at school show. Pro cardman for 6 years until 1911. Then as pottery factory executive in family business in Crooksville, Ohio.
Prolific inventor of trick card deck and card effects, including Mental Discernment (by 1932), Color Discernment (by 1932), Cards of Chance (by 1932), Elusive Joker (by 1932), Name-O-Card (1932), N.R.A. Deck (1933), Cosmic Ray Cards (1933), Nudist Deck = Mental Photography Deck (1934), Mirage Deck (1934), Photographic Card (by 1935), Nu-Idea Deck (1935), Jim Jam Cards (by 1936), Delirium Tremens (by 1936), Tuned Deck (by 1938), & Coo Coo Cards (by 1940). Also invented Goofy Dice (by 1940).
Wrote Eye-Openers (1932, 20pp), More Eye-Openers (1933, 28pp), Fifteen Minutes with a Rope [late 1930s; 2nd ed by Snyder, 1942), Modernism in Pasteboard (1934, with Nelson Hahne), Smart Magic (1935, with Nelson Hahne), etc. See Trevor H. Hall, The Testament of Ralph W. Hull [1945, 116pp].
Hull, Burling[ame Gilbert]
(Brooklyn, New York City, NY: 9 Sep 1889-19 Nov 1982) Inspired by and learned in 1893 at age 4 when invented first trick. Pro since 1907 or 1908 when he began his life-long career as a mail-order magic dealer in New York City, initially under own name.
Soon turned to teaching and writing booklets on specialized subjects in magic. His first book was Expert Billiard Ball Magic (1910, 63pp), an instant success and also the first step-by-step photo-illustrated how-to magic book.
Subsequently a prolific author, including Bulletin of Latest Sleights and Improved Tricks (1914, 31pp), Master Sleights with Billiard Ballss (1914, 31pp), 33 Rope Ties and Chain Releases (1915, 46pp; repr 1947), A Modern Handkerchief Act (1915), Twelve Sealed Message Reading Methods (1920), How to Answer Questions for Crystal Gazing and Mind Reading Acts (1927), Nine Great Card Feats (1933), Fifty Sealed Message Reading Methods (1935, 52pp), Double Magic with Cards (1935), Your "Break" in Show Business (1955, 27pp, as anonymous); Stage Illusions for the 1,2 or 3 Performer Show (1959; 2nd ed 1972, 39pp), The Dictionary of Mentalism (1961; 3rd rev ed 1973, 2 vols, 208_206pp as The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism), Gold Medal Showmanship for Magicians and Mentalists (1971, 99pp), & Houdini's Greatest Mystery (1982, his last book). Trick in Genii. NOTE: Climax Card Routine (1933) was written by Annemann & not by Hull, as the latter sometimes claimed out of pique.
Invented the Card Problem (late 1908), Electra = The Trance Cards (early 1909), Cards Mysterious (by 1909), Svengali Deck (by mid-1909 when pirated by W.D. LeRoy), Menetekel Deck (by mid-1909 when pirated by LeRoy), Where? = The Ghost Card (late 1910), and improved Frank Hall's Floating Lightbulb (in 1931).
Retired to Deland, Florida, in 1975. Although an important figure in magic, his often outrageous claims and many empty promises led him to be widely known as "Hurling Bull".
Used many pseudonyms, including "Clif [sic] Westfield" (in 1907), "The White Wizard" (1912-18), "Gilbert Galt" (pen name of novelettes in pulp magazines c1916), "Gilbert Gault" (as pretend magic editor in 1930s), "Sylvester Walters" (as pretend editor of Sealed Mysteries), "Volta" (stage name since 1932), "A.R. Smith Jr" as editor of Stage Magic (1935, 6 issues), "Lou Hall" (his pretend agent in 1950s), & "Gid Dayn" (1959-61, his coy rendering of "God ***").
Memoir is The Edison of Magic and His Incredible Creations (1977, 112pp). Audio. A full bio by Samuel Patrick Smith is in progress. [Albo95,p38]

Wow! what a great reply. Thanks!
I seem to remember owning an old manuscript on second sight by H.G. Burlingame, a pseudonym not mentioned above- but must have been his.
As for Ralph W. Hull- did he really have a brother if so what was his name-
this would competle my mulling about hulls

Hi cinemagician,
Your welcome, glad I could be of help. Bart Whale’s book, “Who’s Who in Magic” is a wonderful reference tool and interesting reading.
The name Burlingame as it relates to Burling[ame] Hull and H.J. Burlingame is stricktly a coincidence. Hardin Jasper Elroy Burlingame (aka Chas. L. Burlingame) was a magic dealer and author. He was born in my home state of Wisconsin in 1852 at Manitowoc. He spent most of his adult life, and magic years in Chicago. In 1907 he moved to Syracuse, Indiana where he died on August 27th, 1915.
Two of his most interesting books are “Leave’s From Conjurers’ Scrapbooks” 1891, and a book about Alexander Herrmann in 1897. Both are GREAT reads!
There is a wonderful tribute and biography written by his old friend Frederick Eugene Powell in the October, 1915 issue of the Sphinx. A nice portrait of H.J. Burlingame is on the cover also.
Regards, Mark Damon
P.S. With regards to the Hull brothers, I can’t seem to come across any reference too who they were, or a magic shop. I will keep looking through my stuff however. Hopefully others can help out with this as well.

Thanks Damon, this confirms it --it was H.J. Burlingame not H.G. Burlingame!
I am curently reading Veron's Biography by David Ben (It's GREAT) and many times mention is made to Ralph W. Hull - especailly his "mental discernment routine".
Your sources seem correct.
The only missing piece (for me) is weather or not Ralph had a brother--
Thanks Damon you are a true help and guiding light-
Wish I too had a copy of Whale's book

That's Whaley, not Whale. Whaley has written a couple of major reference works on magic.

Bill,
I bought some of Burling Hull's things when he entered the nuring home. Someday I want you to plunder through a box (about ths size of a car battery) of things with me. I have no idea what they are. Many are homemade from old PA cans, etc. Some are painted, taped over, or modified in some other way. It's likely just junk, but it's strange junk!
In the "stuff" was a large grocery bag of Fresh Fish Today sets. It took me fifteen years to use them up. Wednesday I was in Florida and guess what was presented? Yep! Fresh Fish Today...
Somethings never change.
The rehearsal Studio / Theater at the ranch is finished. Come see Lucy's live unicorns. It is a perfect setting for a fair.

I'm not sure whether that set of dates for Burling Hull is correct. If I remember correctly, he died right before the SAM convention in Houston in 1982, which would have put it at June sometime. I'll have to check with Bev Bergeron and/or the Linking Ring.

What is the value or how collectable are Burling Hull's original manuscripts or autographs?
I came across a trove of items recently that appear to be original - hand typed - and also many Volta items and letters from Hull.
Is this stuff valuable?

REPLY:
Ralph Waldo Emerson Hull (Ralph W. Hull) is my Grandfather.....my Mom's Dad. He was born in Deavertown, Ohio but lived his life in Crooksville, Ohio. He died at the age of 58 on May 20, 1943 of stroke related causes. As you probably know, he was the inventor and performer of many card tricks - sleight of hand, rope tricks, Cup and Balls Routine and writer of several books, one that was re-relased in U.K. a couple of years ago. He was NOT any relation to Burling Hull.

Richard,
Steve Sopko here, Grandson of Ralph Waldo Emerson Hull (Ralph W. Hull) ........ and No - he was not part of the Hull Bros you mentioned. (to be honest - I am not familiar with them) Ralph's brothers, Floyd, Russell, and John were of the A.E. Hull family that started the A. E. HULL POTTERY Co. of Crooksville, Ohio early in the 1900's. Also the Star Stoneware Co. also of Crooksville. Ralph had six kids - including my Mom and for a while worked in Administration at the Hull Pottery. (rather coveted pottery these days for collectors) Ralph also had a successful business in Crooksville, the PDQ Store (D for *** and not DARN as the church-ladies would like to imagine as his trucks with PDQ emblazoned on the sides roamed the areas around Perry and Morgan Counties in SE Ohio. He also had a "phantom" Radio Station in a third story walk-up near the Bank in downtown Crooksville. It took a long time for him to be found out on that one! He did his magic performances up until very near his death - which was sudden and unexpected in 1943. He was 58 years old.
