I was wondering if anyone would be interested in buying something like this:
http://home.comcast.net/~twisseman/tele/main.htm http://home.comcast.net/~twisseman/tele/telepic.htm More interesting things about the spirit telegraph. . . It is under the magician's control at all times. You can be standing or walking or sitting at a distance of up to 40 feet from the telegraph and still be in control of it. You can sit it on the floor, a glass table or even let someone hold it and still be in control of it. You can control it with NO visible movement of your body and without making any sound. I am thinking about "restoring" a few more of these machines if there is any interest from any fellow magicians in owning one of these. They are mind blowing. Tim Wisseman |

YES! I was just talking to someone about trying to find this sort of thing. So when, how much, etc.

Only one exists, which of course is the one that you see on the one the above web link. I have been using it for about two years now with great success and was sort of wondering if anyone else might like to have one of their own. How much, I am not sure, it takes many hours to build one. When? that would be as soon as finish building a few of them. I have all the parts, it is just a matter of me doing the work.

Yes, I have seen the ghost in the machine web site.
I think, but am not sure, that my telegraph uses a different method to trigger the device. With my telegraph you can be across the room or in a different room, and trigger the device. I do not know if that is the case with the ghost in the machine effect. I know the ghost in the machine uses what appears to be a radio shack buzzer for making the sound, while my telegraph uses an electromagnet and telegraph sounder. They both use the idea of an ghost conducting electric across an air gap. Yes, in a lot of ways the "ghost in the machine" and the "Spirit Telegraph" are simular. Tim |

I think this is a beautiful piece, the documentation makes it for me, and the story line is right up my alley, I have other tesla like effects that this would work into perfectly. I would love to see it available. P.M. me also

I have been considering building something very similar, though I think the method that I was intending to use was more of what they used for Ghost in the Machine. After looking at your pictures, I think that you can do a better job of it than I can and would be VERY interested if you decide to build more of these. Please let me know if you decide to follow through with this and, as with the others, please PM me when you decide on price, etc.
Thanks, Dave |

Looks great!! Now if you could reproduce the old style batteries in keeping with the time frame it would be even better. I know most people wouldn't care but....

I think it would be an even stronger effect if the batteries looked dead and corroded. Spirits communicate through it, would spirits need electricity.

I think that new batteries are necessary to create the illusion. Given the theory behind the machine, antique batteries would hardly be believable. The one thing that someone might wonder is how a modern C (or whatever) cell battery would fit neatly into an apparatus that old. It might look more realistic if wires were simply attached to a lantern battery. That said, these are beautiful pieces and this is a minor point to be sure.

Another idea would be to operate the device with a lantern battery attached with alligator clips. Then, you "inadvertently" leave one battery lead unattached, but the device still works. Of course, you have small batteries hidden inside the base. I have a similar device that I do this with, but mine does not have the antique appearance of Cocomax' beautiful machine. My method is somewhat different, also.

I decided to use D cells because people know what they are, they can bring their own with them you can open a new pack of them so that the spectators can feel confident that the device is free of trickery. The goal is to make things as simple as possible, just 2 COMMON batteries, a coil of wire, and an air gap make up the curcuit. I do make a point of explaining that the D sized battery was first marketed to the public in 1898 it was used in the "electric hand torch" or flashlight.
You can read more about the history of batteries here: http://www.energizer.com/learning/histor......ear=1898 Tim |

Interested here also -- I would probably modify it to look like at had run on a lantern battery -- but that I had then jury rigged a way to use D cells with alligator clips on the old posts......ala Bill's suggestion above.

Here's a thought. It requires a secondary power source (Concealed batteries).
Just have a little cup set up at the back of the device to set a vegetable or fruit in (If I remember my HS chem class, potatos or Lemons), have a couple of skewers attached to wires to insert into the veg, and voila! You have a battery that existed long before the modern ones would have. One step further- Tests were done with Lie Detectors (When they were first developed- 50's I think) and plants showing that they have a change in galvanic response when under stress or percieved threat. There was even a mythbusters episode about this (One that was actually kind of creepy when they started getting results from thinking angry thoughts at the ficus). It was busted by the end of the show once they took out ALL of the possible influences. So how about instead of communicating just with the dead, you communicate with plants as well? Attach a live plant/tree/cactus- whatever by alligator clips on wires to complete the mock circuit. You approach with an open flame, and it begans signalling distress by tapping the code receiver faster and faster. You talk to it, and it settles down into a steady rythem. Show it a grasshopper, and it goes beserk, show it an earthworm and it calms right down. You could then go on to show that all plants are connected, almost sentient by damaging a plant next to the one connected and having the original go off the deep end. You could scar vegetarians for life!!!! "Urm...No...I'm a level 7 vegan...I don't eat anything with a shadow." Have I gone too silly with this? It has me thinking anyways. Gwyd |
