Designing Miracles is powerful mojo.
Ortiz get into an area of magic that has been seriously overlooked in the past. As you read the book you will get those goose bumps you get when you're reading or seeing something that you know is taking you to the edge of new ground and possibilities. Having just re-read "Our Magic" I see how much is actually missing from it (understandable considering the year of authorship), and I now realize just how important "Strong Magic" and "Designing Miracles" are to the magi wanting to move into a completely differnt groove and outlook on his/her craft. In the end, all I can say about "Designing Miracles" that will do it justice is simply to buy it. The information in this book, now that it's been published, is informatiom that ANYBODY related to magic as a designer, magician, writer....heck even a dealer MUST have. I've just finished the book, and flipped back to start it yet again........it's that good! |

I'm about 3/4 through the book now and it's an excellent book on theory as I figured it would be. It really makes you think. Strong Magic is my favorite book on Magic Theory and Designing Miracles completes the whole picture.
Thanks Darwin.

I've almost finished the book and highly recommend it.
Strong Magic was a great book on presentational technique and considerations, Designing Miracles is more of the same great stuff related to, obviously, the construction of the effects. Darwins Laws are enlightening. It's clearly and concisely written, straight to the point making it clear that WE the performer are FULLY responsible for the reactions we get from the effects we perform. Just buy the book, read and apply. Thanks for another great book.
The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them. George Bernard Shaw.

I've only read about 75 pages to date, but my reaction so far is "move over, Mr. Devant and Mr. Fitzkee, you have company!"
As others have noted, this is not a book about presentation, but I have no doubt it will make your presentations stronger. It is also not about methods, but about using and structuring your methods in ways to make your effects stronger and more bulletproof. Darwin explains and discusses things that many of us have perhaps thought about on a subconscious level or applied before, but only in a random way. There is much to think about and learn here. For any magician who wants to take the next steps forward in the pursuit of his art, this would be $40 well spent. It's also a fine companion volume to "Strong Magic," which I also enjoyed thoroughly and highly recommend. SETH

Even better than I hoped for.
For the working performer Darwin's tips can be instantly applied to your own material. Strong Magic came out when I'd decided to become a professional. Designing Miracles came out when I could admit to myself I am succeeding in being one. It gives me the opportunity to almost "re-invent", ot at least upgrade my working material. Priceless information. Thanks Darwin.

Glad to see the enthusiastic response to Designing Miracles. If anyone hasn't picked up a copy yet, you can probably still get them from Darwin himself. He posts here (and did on this thread) so you could probably PM him on the Café'.

You will find the true inner "secrets" about magic design in this book. I think this book will make a big difference for creative inventors in magic.
Darwin Ortiz may be the first "magic" writer who wins the grand Noble prize in literature. |

Does the book apply to close-up only, or also to show construction and stage magic?

Primarily close-up, but the concepts apply to all magic. It's not about show construction in the physical sense, but more in the sense of scripting your show to eliminate, bypass, or minimize what you don't want them to see (or even think) and emphasize the parts you do want them to notice.
Think of the story about Harry Blackstone and the misdirection he used on stage with a "volunteer" stumbling while an assistant did the "dirty work." Although it was done in plain view, nobody "saw" it. Darwin explains concepts like this, using close-up magic as examples.

Just like Strong Magic, this book is destined to be a classic and should be on the shelf of anyone who wants to improve their magic.

I've finished reading this book for the second time, and I consider myself a better man because of it. It is, without a single doubt, one of the best books I have ever read on this maddening subject.
Ortiz states that what the layman thinks is the most important subject in magic. That's pretty much where the book starts, and it gets better from there. Get the book if you can for this simple (yet wonderfully complex!) reason.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I received this book a few days ago...
If you do not wish to raise the level of your performance and enhance your magic, don't get this book, or Strong Magic. These two volumes make you question things about your effects that I didn't even know existed. I am a much better showman for the hard work that Darwin shares. Food for thought: Why do pseudo pros slam the invisible deck, yet audiences eat it up? Answer: designing Miracles....

I found this to be a quick read and easily digested (in comparison to other books on theory). I am re-evaluating my material and applying "Darwin's Laws".
