A review of SPREADWAVE from FISM:

Mathieu presented a wonderful effect called “SpreadWave.”

He removed a blank deck from its case had a card named by a spectator.

He then cut and spread his way through the deck to show that all the cards were blank.

He then states that there are 3 cards in the deck.

He spreads the cards to show 3 backs showing.

Upon removing these cards, they are found to have words on them – one says “YOUR”, the next “CARD” and the last says “IS THE”.

He arranges them then re-spreads the deck and printed in big, black, bold lettering across the spread is “NINE OF DIAMONDS.”

The reaction in the video room, where I was watching the competition from, was amazing and had people discussing it for quite a while afterwards.

BTW, Mathieu says this should be released in the USA in about a month.

I did hear about this effect. Thank you for the clarification and the name of what to be expecting in the months to come. I heard about this from people who were there and saw the effect first hand. Can't wait to get my hands on this one........ Thanks again. JPV

I just check Mathieu Birh's website and didn't see it mentions yet..

Wow, this sounds impressive. Is the spectator's card selection truly a free choice?

I'm already wondering if this could perhaps follow an effect like Blizzard?...

Yes,but with the exception of four cards. You eliminate those by saying that most spectators would chose them - so there are 48 cards left for a truly free choice and that's really impressive.

Does anyone know if this could be adapted to other words? Say, a version of PH's Anything Deck?

I received yesterday Spreadwave by Mathieu Bich as I ordered at FISM 2006 in Stockholm. It definitely was worth the wait. It is a truly remarkable effect which is a closer. The thinking behind it is defiitely off beat. No wonder it garnered a prize in the category of invention. I know you all are going to be very impressed. A must buy!

I bought one of these at the recent Blackpool convention, so it shouldn't be too long. Give Mathew an email, he might sell it directly to you,

I got one of these before Christmas, Mathieu was kind enough to send me one, all I can say is it is killer! Those that saw me performing this all loved it and wanted one, some even said it was the trick of the convention. It really is a stunner, and I use it all the time! It is even going into my competition act, but I won't talk about that!
The effect is as direct and amazing as it sounds. You place a deck of cards on the table, someone names any card, you show the cards to be a blank deck of cards on both sides. Just a snap and the name of the freely named card appears on the sides of the cards. One deck is used, is incredible method, and I think most people like the method more than the trick itself! I don't know what these retail at, but whatever the cost...i think it is worth it!

I also saw it at the Blackpool Convention performed by Mathieu. It was really a great effect. The only drawback (but only for me) is the fact that it will not work in a german version. Or that it is not available in this language.

And yes, only four cards can not be created. Do I say too much if I say that these are the aces? Hmmmm. I don´t think so. The effect itself is very strong and impressive indeed.

If you get the opportunity get this effect!

I also saw this performed by Mathieu at the Blackpool Convention. The spectator really does get a legitimate free choice (minus the aces). The final display of all the blank cards with the named card printed (characters half-on and half-off some cards) is very nice. Something I imagine the laymen will love. The only potential problem I could see is that the final reveal looks a lot better spread on a table than it does spread in the performer's hands. Therefore, I would suggest being careful before purchasing this is you do not often get the chance to perform at tables or other surfaces.

I was really impressed but not enough to tear me away from my Anything Deck I'm afraid. But well done Mathieu, an extremely creative idea!

Take it easy,

Also, I do understand that the effect is entirely different from the Anything Deck. The only similarity is having words appear on the cards and I understand that. Anything Deck suits me better.

I'll buy one for sure.

You guys will love it when you do! One of the best effects EVER created. If this was instant reset, I would say that in my opinion it is the BEST trick ever created, but unfortuantely it's not. I can reset the deck in less than 30 seconds now, which is good, but still too slow for table hopping, plus I couldn't reset in front of people at the table. That is the tricks only flaw, other than that it is pretty much perfect!

It does look really cool. I emailed Mathieu to ask when it will be available but he hasn’t responded. I wonder if we will ever be able to purchase this?

Give it time Nick, they were available from www.jbtv.co.uk but sold out of their first batch incredibly quickly. They should be widely available soon, Mathieu is very busy at the moment

Sorry Chris,

Your “it is the BEST trick ever created” comment got me excited and possibly a little impatient. I guess I will just have to wait and see if it is ever available again.

Thanks,

Nick

Chris,
I'm interested in this effect as a mentalist. How sleight intensive is this? I have a fair amount of chops still, and would like to use the deck (possibly) to "predict" a freely named card.

PM me if necessary.

Best,
Jerome.

Hi Jerome, there is NO sleight of hand at all. Everything is open and free. You show a deck, get someone to name ANY card, show the deck is blank on both sides, snap and three card appear with writing which say 'Your Card Is', then you respread the same deck and printed across the side is the name of the card. It is a killer for how simple it is. Memory is the only part needed for this, and not much memory at that. To be fair, people may think it requires a lot, however, it is more practice than anything. I have used it now for over 6 months and fooled everyone I have shown. It is a superb effect, and in my opinion, under priced!!!

Nick, next time I speak to Mathieu, I will try and find out when the next batch will be ready, it will be well worth the wait!!!
