Well Denny, I have a good question for a dealer. Many is the time I read about "my favorite trick" from a dealer and it is the newest version of whatever is popular at the moment.
What is YOUR favorite trick? Your real favorite. It could be one you created, one you like to perform, or just your favorite to see performed. So Denny, what is your true favorite? (Cue the Jeopardy music)

No Jeopardy Music needed for this question. I know immediately.
If God came down (apologies to Penn) and said, "Denny, You can only do one trick the rest of your life," then my answer would be The Malini Egg Bag. I've been doing it in my show for over thirty years and it works for young, old, grouchy, happy, or even magicians once in a while. The simple concept of vanishing and producing a delicate raw egg under total test conditions, repeatedly, just amazes an audience of any kind. You can do it close up, surrounded, as walk around, or on the largest of stages. I remember doing this on satge for 4000 people at the Concord Hotel as the opening act for Glenn Campbell. When Campbell came back again the next year, the management wanted us to open for him again and make sure we do that "egg trick." It became such a strong effect that whenever we were limited in time and had to cut something from the act, we would cut the Girl on Swords Illusion before we would cut the egg bag. I call it "The Most Perfect Trick in Magic." Sometimes, we get so close to our own magic that we can many times overlook the power of simple effects and how they impact a lay audience. That's why certain tricks are called "classics." They have been pleasing audiences for a hundred years or so and never seem to get old. Remember...there's no such thing as an old joke if you have never heard it before. There's also no such thing as an old trick if you've never seen it before. We are magicians and are interested in magic. We see many tricks over and over again at magic meetings, conventions, banquets, etc. Most "laymen" have never in their life ever seen a magician live, much less a Malini Egg Bag!! If they've never seen it, then it's NEW!!!
Never overlook the strength of a "classic."

I think I can chime in and answer this one for Denny.
Lynetta Welch, at Fabric Manipulation, makes THE best Malini Egg Bags! They are beautifully made.
Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the Denny & Lee Show at the Wells Theatre is a MUST HAVE!!! Just great all around magic. And, if you've never done the egg bag, or thought it wouldn't play well, YOU WILL RECONSIDER AFTER SEEING DENNY'S ROUTINE! It's a great performance and you'll see exactly why he'd choose just that one trick if he had too.

Hi Denny,
I just thought that I would take a moment to thank you for taking such good care of me and my magic needs. Every bit of advice, as to which books I should be reading, to what size Billiard ball I should learn with, were right on. I remember the first time I walked into your store in Las Vegas and you greeted me as if we were old friends. Over the next two hours, I listened as you gave your insights and experience to the many that came into the store to purchase items of magic. You have no idea of what kind of impression you made on a young 14 year old that day. You sir, are a Pearl!

I went to Denny's shop about 10 months ago, and mentioned that I was interested in trade show type of stuff. I was in sales at the time, and loved the idea of using magic in a sales presentation. Denny grabbed the egg bag, and improvised (I think it was improv) a fantastic routine that fit my industry perfectly. Unfortunately, I was sort of between jobs, and had already spent my magic budget. However, the routine stuck with me, and I'm going to be visiting his store again this week. (I could buy it at Barry's, which is much closer to my house, but I figure it's only right to support the guy who gave me the idea in the first place.)
Anyway, thank you Denny for the insight, both here at the Café', and in person and on the phone. (I'm the guy who's been bugging you this past week about the wallet for Darwin Ortiz' Dream Card effect.) See you soon!

I agree with you Denny about the egg bag.....yet what in your experience has worked well as a comedy closer....I have used my version of the multiplying bottles but do you have any other suggestions?? Don, Regina, Canada

I met you for the first time recently at your Baltimore shop, and you graciously performed part of your Malini Egg Bag routine. I have to say that I had never even thought of learning the Malini egg bag until I saw you perform it -- it really was magical.

I was very lucky being TAUGHT the handling by Ken himself, in order to help write the instructions. In all these years, since it was written, it is hard to improve on the basic routine--which has it roots from Charlie Miller, who, with Harry and Margi Riser and Persi Diaconis developed the handling and bag design.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. You guys make me feel special.
As far as the question about a "comedy closer" I just feel that the Multiplying Bottles is the perfect clsing bit. Not so much that it's such a great trick BUT the pacing (If following the Ken Brooke routine) is so perfect that it builds to a high and then leaves the audience in a frenzy. I really can't think of a better comedy closer.
For those who may have missed it, you can see it on You Tube. Just look for "denny haney" and the bottles should come right up.
As for the Egg Bag, I just want to remind everyone that I will be going to the World Magic Summit convention in Las Vegas next week and on February 25th I will be at my shop in Las Vegas and will be doing a complete "hands on workshop" on the Malini Egg Bag. I plan to spend a couple or three hours on the bag, the handling, routines, thoughts, etc. If you have a bag, be sure to sign up for the workshop. If you don't have a bag, we have everything you need at the shop in Las Vegas and you can get them there.
I also plan to do the same workshop perhaps sometime in March here at the Baltimore studio.

While on the subject of the egg bag I would like to get some additional insight on the mallini vs. mardo bag & a blown egg vs. a wooden egg. I currently use the mardo & am comfortable with the handling & look of the bag, but naturally have always heard about the wonders of the mallini & have watched it's performance many times so I would be interested in hearing Denny's thoughts. I also use a wooden egg as to me it seems to have more of a natural feel & weight, if I never tell them it is wooden the spectator seesm to handle very gently as if it was a real egg, so I would appreciate your or other's insight there too.

I own a Senior Mardo bag as well. I'll admit that I got it mainly for research purposes, but I don't think it matters what type of egg you use with that bag. It's not a complete necessity to use a blown egg vs. a wooden egg. You could do the egg bag with steel egg if you wanted to. I think most of us who use the Malini bag prefer blown eggs to due the nature of the basic Malini Egg Bag routine. Wooden eggs sometimes "show" through the fabric. They're also noticeable when the bag is shaken.
Truthfully, the egg bag is about presentation and misdirection. I've seen someone pull a cell phone out of an egg bag as a finale. The blown eggs are for ease of use more than anything else.
