Has anyone tried out the Butter Coin? It's a folding coin that functions as a flipper, folding, bitten, rub away and coin in the bottle. I just bought a folding coin, a johnson, and it only really functions as a coin in bottle and I feel this would be more versatile. I'd just reserve the johnson for only coin in bottle.

I heard if you get a good one they are great, the problem is getting a good one. The way I understand it the process of making them is not very fool proof and you may get several rejects before you get one that is good.....

The coin is very good. I like the butter coin, but only use it as a bite coin really. I don't really do the other routines though.

I got my hands on a good one.
It is precision made and works like a charm for various effects. It stacks well for a multiple coin display.

Does it have an external groove around the rim like most folding coins??

The coin I received is very well made. It makes for a very visual penetration thru a table. Preempt the routine with a coin effect using "normal" coins and let the spectators inspect them. Cause a silver coin to vanish only to end up in your pocket ect…, and as you retrieve it switch in the gimmick.

I've had mine for quite a while now. I think it's great. Did have to recently change the band. Had to use needle to clean out old rubberband remains. Used last band to secure back good as new. Anyone have recommendations re: best place to get replacement bands for quarter and half dollar effects? Is there an alternative innovation that may be more durable/dependable?

I get mine from a seller on eBay who sells the old original style bands made by a magician. Seems to spring better than the mass produced ones.

I had the great pleasure of watching Alex Lourido perform using his Butter Coin in Manhattan this week and I have to say, that I was suprised by how much magic can be gotten out of that one little gimmick. For all of you who have David Roths magic using a similar gaff, will find Alex's Butter Coin even more useful.
Alex Lourido also has another great coin item called Rainbow Coins. He demonstrated that for me as well, and I have to tell you, it threw me for a loop. If you can afford it pick them both up, but either way, you won't be disappointed.... two cents spent, Eric Jones Prestidigitator

I have seen people recommend dental rubber bands, but my experience with them had not been good, they are not very durable. I have always used the bands made from 1/4" rubber tubing sliced thin. I have always been lucky enough to have real brick-and mortar magic shops around, and every time I have ever tried to buy replacement bands they dealers have just handed me a dozen or so, free.
Stan Cohen, of Al's magic shop once recommended buying a replacement ink bladder from a fountain pen. These are available from pen dealers, the kind of store that carries Waterman and Mont Blanc pens. Stan said bands made by slicing one of these into thin circles, like little calimari, are the most durable and dependable you can get. I can't vouch for it as I haven't tried it, but thought I'd pass it along.
Woke up.

Thanks DStachowiak. I'm not familiar with what that actually is, but I'll check with my local office supply co. and see what I can come up with. It would be great to devise a durable band, or at least more so than what we have now. Thanks again!

I own a butter coin and I love it. But what Fingers said, some are good and some and very poorly made. I usually only do bite coin and rub-away coin because I don't like gaff coins that much, but I definatley reccomend getting butter coin.

I just got my Butter coin today and I think I got a lemon. The entire back of the coin was covered in a hardened bubbly glue. I have spent the last half hour carefully trying to scrape it off with my fingernail. I have gotten most of it off but can't get it all. I also noticed some slight deformities around the eagle on the back. Has anyone had any luck with getting these replaced? Whether it be contacting Alex Lorido or the dealer you purchased it from. I got mine from MJM Magic and I have never had a problem. I also don't feel this should be their problem since they didn't make it. Is Alex good about backing his products, or are you just stuck with the one you got?

Your Buttercoin is defective. This is not the condition they are suppose to come in. I would recommend returning it to the dealer that sold it to you for replacement. They in turn can return it to their supplier for replacement. A good dealer will do this for you. If your dealer has a problem with replacing defective merchandise then it is time to switch dealers.

For anyone else who buys one of these, the coin is not defective if it has sticky stuff on the back. In fact, it even states in the packaging that the globby stuff on the back is supposed to be there (holds the coin in place on the packaging). Simply scrape it off.
