I did ball & tube for years, but found it worked VERY well using a clear glass marble in place of the steel ball

I really like the sound of that ... I may be buying a new steel ball and tube, I don't think I can find mine it's been so long.
I did the same thing to "steal" the gimmick - using the other hand. Mind blowing when done that way! Eliminates all the "funny moves" and looks just like real magic. And makes it easier to become a "stand up" routine that doesn't require a table to drop the props on.

There were so many wonderful routines and techniques I found when writing my booklet on this. My regret was that I fashioned it as a pamphlet with short paragraphs instead of depth of routines and performance. That is where the DVD will come in. I love the effect on a surface level in that it is a chrome plated effect that sells for under $10, it has a simple level or an advanced level for performing. I included some history on its performance and the original pamphlet told about Danny Tsukalis the macy's magician who mesmerized the lay audiences. The new version (sold to Robbins) edited the background out. I had Al Flosso Museum pics of several versions of the B&T as well.
I worked with Walter Gibson when writing some of the effects with the "Gibson Steal", Mike Tannen, Roy Fromer and others. I also resurrected the old National Magic instruction sheet.
I approached it quite differently and applied other principles of magic to the effect so as to facilitate a complete routine as well as a puzzle.
In my eyes, it was a mini drumhead tube,a Jardin Ellis effect, a silk vanish or production. I developed slick moves to do the effect without the gimmick (copied in other books), fire, sponge and liquid effects as well.
So, to answer the original question, "Is it worth owning?" It is worth ten times it's weight in magic history, technique and entertainment.
I went to National conventions in the 80's and showed and sold the effect to magicians who owned it for years and said to me "my set is not like yours". That was cool for me as I showed them what I was doing.

Was it the shop in Rahway or Collins magic?
--------
I never got to put the odd stuff from the booklet on video. Like the water loads, fire, folding coin and sponge stuff. That's what I am working on now.

Neither it was in South Jersey the magic shop that Rick Saphire owns on Route 70. I like to support Brick and Mortar shops whenever possible since we have lost so many of them. My only regret is that the booklet does not have the history in it as you noted in other posts.

The DVD will have some of the history and will be available from my site http://www.stagetricks.com
or best yet, e-mail me: magicians@aol.com to get on the announcement list.
One bit of note: the cover was done by Ed Mishel who also did the little ad cut for Tannens ads on the B&T.
He made a 2'x3' black and silver ink cover which the printer shot on a plate for printing. Unfortunately, the printer kpt and then lost the large original.
One nice touch, was when he did my name, the "i's" in magic Ian were ball and tubes.
The funny part is: when Robbins reprinted the booklet, he took off the three pages but didn't change the index.

Docc's routine is the best I have ever seen, however, it can not be performed by anybody but a strong performer. It is a goal to be worked toward.

The moves are straight out of my book. So is all of the art work.
