Several magicians have e-mailed and PM'd me today asking me for my favorite volume in the Semi-Automatic Card Trick series. Here is my response from the introduction to Volume VI:

"I am often asked to pick my favorite volumes in the series. This is like asking parents to pick their favorite offspring. But I have now decided that my favorite volumes are the ones that you have not yet purchased. Thus, if you like the volumes of the series that you own, understand that they pale in comparison to those still on your wish list. If you don’t like the volumes of the series you own, understand that they pale in comparison to those yet to be purchased. The only solution is to procure all seven volumes – and by then you will be able to make an informed decision without further input."

The truth is that I do a large percentage of the material in all of the volumes. They are all in my active repertoire. If I do more out of some volumes than others, it's only out of habit or a failure in memory.

Dear Steve,

While watching the Super Bowl last year, I kept hearing the announcer say, "The quarterback got SACT...again!" I thought, "Finally, card tricks during the half-time show! Someone's finally walking the true path!" However, I never saw a single deck. Dang.

What gives, Steve? Were you handing out free copies of your books as extra padding for the jocks as a clever marketing ploy? Where were the jocks stuffing them? Is this sort of promotion less expensive than a 30-second commercial spot?

Oops, I forgot we're on the Café. Let me ask a more pertinent question:

Who supplied the extra middle digit on the cover of Volume Six?

Best,
Mick

PS: Congratulations on being the Guest of Honor here...it should have been done long ago. In creating the SACT series you are the first to leave a positive cardin' footprint. These books are not only having a significant historical impact upon our craft...but personally, they have put plenty of food on my family's table. For years to come, I will be in your debt.

Mick

Hi Mick,

For the pertinent question, it's actually an extra third finger. I took the picture of my hand (not as easy as it sounds, but easier than illustrating coins) and then dinked with it in PhotoShop.

I thought it was funny - but then two things happened:
(1) I discovered another author of a non-magic book put a similar illustration (not a picture) on the cover of his book at about the same time. Since his wasn't a sixth volume in a series, I'm not sure what the subtext was. I wasn't curious enough to actually buy his book.
(2) I actually had a Volume VI returned to me still sealed because the magician who received it in the mail (who will remain nameless if the payments continue) returned it to me saying I had sent him a Volume 5 by accident. It took me a few minutes to figure out what he was talking about. He never actually counted the fingers - he just glanced at the hand in the cover picture and saw nothing unusual so he sent it back.

Hang in there Mick! You're worth an extra finger in my book any day.

Steve,

Rumor has it that in a few years you will still be putting out more great volumes in this series (though it may be retitled SEMI-ARTHRITIC CARD TRICKS by then). I know this rumor is true because I started it myself.

When do you plan on releasing SACT Volume 8?

Thanks,
Mick (that OTHER humor guy)

Excuse me, but I just checked Volume 6 of SACT and there is only one finger on my cover. I just assumed it was a reprint of Volume 1. Could someone PM me and tell me if their Volume 6 has more than one finger on the cover? Steve keeps mentioning subtext...is this subtext? What I'm really asking (and this is directed to Mr. Beam), did you have the printers produce a separate cover just for me?
Thank you for your time.

OK,having contacted Mick and Doug I can verify that our covers have only the middle finger extended. This must be a collector's edition or something...

Oh! You're talking about the one with the Polaroid picture taped to the cover. Why didn't you say so. That edition was limited to my Humor Additors / proofreaders. It was my way of saying, "This one's for you."

Apparently, Steve has started a cultural trend with the cover of Volume Six, guys. While driving my kids to school this morning, traffic was heavy and tempers were short. Still, while I was weaving between the cars, I was totally blown away by how many other parents in MY OWN COMMUNITY showed their support for Steve's work.

I had no idea Steve was that well-known. Amazing.
