I don't think I saw David Hoy (a.k.a. Dr. Faust) on the list. Maybe the topic is only for living magicians. But according to his bio in The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust, he was a Baptist evangelist and preacher.

Its open to alive and dead. Hoy as in Hoy book test? Makes sense as to why I've seen it used with the Bible alot.

Yes, it's the same Hoy as the Hoy book test as well as the "tossed out deck". His "bold" approach has influenced most popular mentalists today. This is from his book:
"Hoy is also a graduate of a Seminary in Louisville, and holds a B.D. degree. Hoy was an evangelist for the Baptist Church for several years and has preached on two tours of Europe and one in South America, principally Brazil. In all his evangelistic work, he used magic to gather crowds and to illustrate lessons. He is the author of "Magic with a Message" recently re-published by the Ireland Magic Company...Hoy still preaches..." (BTW, Steve, I'm new around here. What particular can of worms has been unleashed by my unsuspecting self?) -Rick |

The fact that Hoy represented himself as a REAL psychic in his later and final years, doing serious Q&A on radio and TV and taking mailed questions for pay.
If I'm not mistaken, the evangelical crowd frowns on psychics.

Hey, don't mean to drive the thread off topic but wow. I never knew that David Hoy turned pychic/science of the mind in his later years. After I read your post, Steve, I did a search and found a book available online by Gary North (who many Christians should be familiar with as one of the most brilliant minds of the Reconstructionist movement) called "Unholy Spirits" about pyschic phenomena. He has a section chronicling the life and career of Hoy. Weird.

Dick Stoner has told me stories about him when he would drop by in Fort Wayne. He went from preacher to performing in the playboy clubs too.

With all due respect, Gary North is waaaaaaaay off about Hoy (and other psychic phenomena).
I had correspondence with North while I was writing my book. In Christian charity, all I will say right now is North is a very interesting person. But he doesn't have a clue when it comes to so-called psychic phenomena. Even when I showed him Hoy's book about "hurling the headlines", etc., he stood his ground in his belief that Hoy was a "real" psychic and basically told me I didn't know what I was talking about! Of course he was also telling us all in 1999 that Y2K was going to be a MAJOR disaster! He should have read more about Hoy's methods of making predictions! Now talk about someone who didn't know what he was talking about! Terry Posted: Oct 30, 2008 4:26pm My inside knowledge about David Hoy was that although I have no doubt he knew the Lord, he loved the applause of man. Something we all need to be on guard of! Terry

Terry, as of when I posted, I didn't know the actual thesis of North's book. I had just googled "David Hoy" psychic. But you're certainly right. I didn't mean to imply that North was an authority in psychic matters. Only that he's recognized as one of the foremost thinkers in the Christian Reconstruction movement. However off base he may have been though, you have to admit that he looks identical in every way to Orville Redenbacher, and that counts for something.
This whole discussion has made me really want to learn more about David Hoy. Everything I previously knew about him just came from the one book of his I own, "The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust". Did he, in your opinion, ever deceive himself into believing in his own "abilities" or was it all an act all the way? Also, btw, where can I find a copy of your book? I'm guessing from the fact that you contacted Gary North that it's from a Christian perspective. -Rick |

If it helps with the 'mystery,' Hoy once visited a dealer friend and, seeing he was swamped with customers, got behind the counter and helped with counter sales, demonstrating tricks, etc.
My friend asked, "Dave, won't this hurt your psychic business?" "Aw, no." he replied,"People will believe what they WANT to believe."

Here in Australia we've got a great magician "Christopher Wayne" who's also a Christian & has started up http://www.gospelmagic.com.au . His message and magic are both brilliant.
I'll also add myself to the list of Christian Magicians. Wasn't he suppose to come out with a DVD or something?
Posted: Nov 1, 2008 12:08pm A few years ago I heard he was putting together some Gospel Magic DVD. All I've ever seen was a teaser.

On Davy Hoy, get a hold of the book Super-Psychic: The Incredible Dr. Hoy by John Godwin published as a paperback in 1974. A very sympathetic bio of Hoy, but if it's true, it's hard to see how you could consider Hoy any kind of orthodox Christian during the latter part of his pretty short life. He seems like a person who went from gospel magician to a person playing the role of a psychic, to a person pretending to be a psychic. A disturbing story, actually.
