Hello,
The best rope routine I think I've ever seen is Mac King's. I know it's HIS and not to be copied... but it's been several years since I saw him and I can't really remember WHY I was so blown away by the trick. I'm not looking for secrets or anything but can someone tell me WHY I loved the routine so much? I think I remember him cutting the rope a million times and then throwing it out into the audience WHOLE. I'm not sure if I've just embellished it through time or what. Thanks in advance, Daniel dbull@austin.rr.com |

I had the same reaction as you after seeing his routine. I still think it's the best rope routine I have ever seen. I think he starts with "A rope has two ends... unless you remove an end (cuts it). Now that's a rope with one end (cuts the other end). Now that's a rope with no ends."
He is one of, if not THE, most brilliant performers I have ever seen... and yes, the end of his routine he folds the rope up a bunch of times and cuts the rope at all the folds as if to make a bunch of pieces of rope. He lets go and the rope is one long rope tied together in knots... then the kicker; he slides all the knots off and throws them behind him... it's back to one long piece of rope. He's a genius. |

I just saw Mac King's show last week and his rope routine is excellent but it's not the best ever.

The truth is, Tabary's routine is incredible... I also love Whit Hayden's Mongolian Pop Knot... I think the reason I feel Mac is the best is because of the entertainment value. He's just so funny throughout and his patter and timing are perfect. His whole show is just genius.

Tabary is the most elegant rope magician no question. Mac King's routine is probably one of the most funny around.
One word on Mac King, I didn't care for him on the WGM series, but when in Vegas thought to go see him anyway. Glad I did. He is soooo soooo good and real funny in a very humble sort of way. Definitely one of my favorite magic shows ever and a "best value" in Vegas. palle... |

Palle, couldn't have said it better myself. Everyone should check out Mac ... certainly the best value ... and you're gonna laugh.

I've seen Mac in Las Vegas twice and loved both shows. Even with the same act, the shows were rather different because of the volunteers and the audience. Mac did a great job of ad-libing.

I ordered his rope routine from him about a month ago and still haven't received it. Does anyone know if he's out?

Andini,
I ordered this about two weeks ago and received it in about one week. I ordered on-line through Mac's website. |

Mac King's routine is excellent. I loved it and I don't even really care for rope magic. I think he could make anything entertaining.

I have never seen Mac King's routine but am very interested. Another magician that's excellent with rope that wasn't mentioned is Shiego Takagi. His routine with ropes is a thing of beauty.

Vinny, I agree that Shigeo Takagi's rope work is killer. The funny thing is, Mac King's rope routine is based on Shiegeo Takagi's routine and Mac mentions that in his manuscript.

I think everyone here is talking about 2 different routines.
Mac sells a manuscript that is based on a routine that he performed quite a number of years ago. To the best of my knowledge, Mac no longer performs this routine in his act. I purchased it from him at a lecture in 1994, and I will have to check, but I think he specifically states that he no longer performs it. It is a 3-phase Cut and Restored Rope routine, for which he later sold the rights to Copperfield who used it in his 1991 TV special (although he changed the 3rd phase). The routine that Mac performs in his act now is where he takes a 6 ft piece of rope, folds it in half, and half again, and half again, so that he ends up with 16 equal pieces of rope, which he then restores into one long rope with 16 knots. He then slides all of the knots off the rope and throws them in the audience as a souvenier. A great routine, of which I don't know the origins, but it is a killer. Again, I will have to dig Mac's notes out, but I am pretty sure he states that the tricks he teaches in his lecture notes are based on routines that he liked, but for one reason or another, did not fit into his current show, so he wanted to pass them on somewhere. Hope this helps clear up any confusion. Michael |

You are absolutely correct. In fact, the notes for the rope trick is titled "Mac King's OTHER Rope Trick." It's a do-as-I-do type of trick.
The one he does as his show opener begins with Sandsational and then climaxes with the part described above. I doubt he will ever tip the method and he shouldn't---it's just too good.

Several years ago he was in town for a convention, and I too remember his routine being fantastic. Even after he described it, it was still great to watch. Especially at one point when he gets a little gutsy during one of the restorations. I can't remember if he missed it once and we were extra excited when he performed it the next time knowing he hit the move or if we were amazed to see him do it and get it to work.
Simply put he was letting one of the pieces (the special one) fly from hand to hand to create the restoration. It was great. Shawn |

Does he ship the notes to the UK? This sounds very good!
Also, you guys are talking about: Mac King's OTHER Rope Routine. $8 Aren't you? |
