Curtis,

First I have to embarassingly admit that I'm not familiar with your work. (I'm lving in Europe right now on a tight budget, but when I return to the States I will surely check it out. )

Coin magic has been one of my areas of focus since I got seriously interested in magic almost 4 years ago. My question for you is: what are some good progress indicators for aspiring coin wizards? Personally, I slipped into learning a number of vanishes, moves and sleights from Bobo and other sources, but didn't get much further because I couldn't decide where to go next. I think that my grasp of the basics is fairly sound, but I'm not sure how to channel that now. The really strong routines I see that I would like to be able to do seem beyond my current ability, but I'm bored with what I am capable of. Making a coin disappear and reappear repeatedly gets old rather quickly.

Your advice to a not-quite-beginner is welcome

Well, you seem to have the basic effect with coins (disappearing and reappearing) under your control. Larry Jennings once told me that coin magic held little interest for him, since the coin's either there, or it's not there, and that's about all there is to it.

So now the question is what are you going to do with it? Slydini made a masterpiece out of just that, the appearance and disappearance of a single coin. David Roth did likewise. Many performers at your stage of development try to put together a perfect routine with just one coin. That is an obsession that follows many throughout their careers.

I would suggest that you pick some goals, things that you need your coin magic to do. Do you need something that gets people's attention, or something more involved that impresses people? Something that uses four coins, a silk, and final load, or maybe just a single coin. Find things that you want your magic to do, then figure out how you're going to do them.

Is THAT a PALMS OF STEEL 5 Banner I see? YARRRRGH! Please visit The Magic Bakery
