Hello Curtis,

I have an interesting question. I have noticed that a lot of the work out there is very heavily influenced by Kurtz. I was wondering if you think coin magic is bound to take a radical turn one of these days. A lot of magicians, myself included, are doing 3 coin productions, 3 coins across, 3 coin vanishes. Ramsey certainly has his roots in this type of stuff. But what are some up and coming plots?

Thanks,

Corey B.

Up and coming plots are difficult to predict. Magicians have always adapted to their performing conditions, however, and I think we may find some indication there.

In other words, it appears that there will be a slow increase in the number of magicians working in a strolling enviroment. There also seem to be quite a few "chamber" magic shows going right now, albeit mostly on the East Coast. Jamy Ian Swiss, Steve Cohen, Ricky Jay, Paul Gertner, Mark Salem, and several others are pioneering the small one-man show venue, so perhaps coin magic may see a return to the formal table routines typified by David Roth, and earlier, by J.N. Hofzinser. That would be a good thing.

On the other hand, the Blaine influence will tend to skew things towards short, novel, slightly geeky and shocking single effects. This is not, in my opinion, a good thing.

I predict, based on these and other trends, that there will be a revived interest in sleeving. I see people using the spectator as a stage and a prop more often (i.e. Wilson's "Coin under Watch", McClintock's "Timing") There will be new and wonderful applications of edge grip that will take coin magic out of our palms, and up to our fingertips.

3 coin treatments of familiar plots will emerge. i.e., the 3 coin 1 coin routine (see ExTroydinary)Standing 3 coins thru table, etc.

Unfortunate trends: the inevitable "International" treatments of routines where that makes little sense, ditto on reverses.

We will learn that whether the hands "touch" on a visible coins across makes little difference to a layman, just as it matters little to them whether the packets touch during an "invisible palm" routine.

Look for more abstract plots to emerge.

Coin magic will begin to look more "organic" and impromptu, and there will be more to do with pocket change.

Weird things you cannot dream of will emerge. Trust me, expect the unexpected.
