OK Curtis, you know ahead of time that you will be performing either at a table or standing for some VIPs with short attention spans. You have 5 minutes. You will be surrounded. What two effects do you perform and why?

Interesting. I don't want to cop out on this one, but it might be interesting to hear what other people would suggest first. Some general considerations, I would:
1. Spend the first minute impressing the heck out of them. Spend the rest of the time giving them something to remember.
2. If possible, follow Michael Ammar's rules, i.e. borrow an ordinary object, alter it magically, return in its altered state.
3. Are we assuming the Karrel Fox Skywriting trick is out?

Chop cup a la Don Alan - It starts as an observation test, challenges and interests people, like the three card monte or shell game does, is loaded with laughs, and has a killer finish, replete with tag line!
Ring Flight - they trust you enough after the Chop cup, (they know that you are a pro), to lend you their ring - Whit Haydns routine has great comedic possibilities and is what my routine is structured on - and in this case, gives you a reason to excuse yourself gracefully and with a laugh - If thier ring is on your keycase, then your car key is in the locked box, in the locked glove compartment of your locked car! How are you gona get home? "I hate to run, but I'd better get out there and see if there's some way to get the car open before it gets too late, my wife is gonna kill me! Oh, magic, don't fail me now..." or something like that...
Best, PSC
