Title: Acting Naturally-The Tibetan Wishing Box & Other Mysteries
Medium: DVD Arena: close up, parlor, stage Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies This is the third DVD released in the Acting Naturally series by Allen Zingg. The production level is pretty good, well shot and the sound is good. No one will every accuse Allen of being dynamic and his DVDs are straight forward with no bells or whistles. Just well lit sets with a basic back drop and Allen performing and then explaining a number of routines. Taking all this into account it is a good thing that this is a solid set of magic and Allen has great insight into taking routines and making them workable and visible. His goal is to take difficult sleights and make them into something that most can do. He does this very well and that is what makes the series very worth while. If you want tshirts and electronic music with teens gasping at simple tricks this isn’t for you. If you want to learn some pretty cool routines and pick up some very good tips on performance then read on. On this DVD Allen does a little card stuff but also tosses in some work with billiard balls. As I said Allen is a bit dry but he is a very good magician who understands how to present it in a way that is entertaining. Add your own style to these routines and you will have something. I have found that Allen is a teacher more so than anything else and that is what I really enjoyed here. Let’s look at the material….. The Tibetan Wishing Box: This is a little prop you can pick up at an import store that Allen uses with a card to impossible location. He has taken the traditional routine and made it much easier to do, by this I mean no Mercury Card Fold, which always messed me up. The routine taught is well thought out and flows very nicely. I like the force used and there is flashes of fire and mystery and all that good stuff. Allen says he sells little boxes with other routines he uses with it but you can get your own box and do the one on the DVD. The Egyptian Ball Mystery Number One: Done with non gimmicked billiard balls this is a nice routine that moves well and is smooth. I can’t say I was fooled by all of it but I’m not a lay spectator. Taken from Stars of Magic this has been cleaned up and changed for ease of handling and I thought it looked great. It involves a very nice ball change and transposition. I worked with this and like it very much. The Egyptian Ball Mystery Number Two: Another billiard ball routine done with gimmicked balls, The color change looks great and this is also a great routine. I’m not sure if the balls used by Allen are still being made but if so this is a good routine to look into. Premonition Too: A card trick that involves a prediction card being pulled and placed on the table from a blue deck and the spectator picking a card from a red deck. The cards match…no gimmicks and straight forward. This plays really well, I know because I’ve done it, and the routining is smooth and logical. A very nice routine. Make sure to check out the bonus section, some good stuff in there too. I like the material Allen puts out and find his tips and changes to sleights to be valuable. Granted he is a bit dry but I’m looking for instruction here not really entertainment. While I think it is great if you can get both at the same time and that should be the goal I’ll take substance when it is available. This is a good series, more for the advanced guy rather than the newby who wants to get just tricks to do, this is for those wanting to do better magic. |
