Mine was a shop in Hamden, Conn. called the Magic Barn. Probably because it was a barn that was converted into a magic shop! Oddly enough, they sold illusions like "sawing a cow in half" and "the levitating tractor". (Just kidding, in case you missed the smiley face!)
Anyone have a strangely named shop? |

The Magic Cave in Knott's Berry Farm. It was in a cave in the side of a concrete terraformed mountain. Perhaps the coolest themed magic shop I was ever in.
Sadly it is long gone

Mine was B & H School of Magic in Los Alamitos, CA. It was run by Bessie and Herb Fiedler, thus the B & H. It was eventually sold to Armando Gutierrez who hired me to run the magic school. Armando sold it to Stan Allen of Magic Magazine fame and a couple of partners who kept me on as the head teacher, etc. The name changed to The Magic Shop and the Stan Allen School of Magic. After that it went through a couple more permutations that I am not familiar with as I ended up in San Diego eventually running Chuck Martinez's Magician's World. Sheesh!
P.S., Actually, my first shop was a tiny hole in the wall place the name of which I cannot for the life of me remember. It was run by a guy who was a Duncan YoYo champion and a truly extraordinary manipulative magician. His stage card work and billiard ball work was flawless. This is the place I saw my first Chop Cup routine and it remains to this day my favorite 'trick'. After that it would have to be the Fantasy Land magic shop in Disneyland. Sadly it no longer exsists. But, for the first 'real' shop that I could hang out in and watch magic happening....well, it will always be B & H School of Magic. Just a great place and the center of activity for the Long Beach Junior Mystics. It would be interesting for someone to do a real history of the magic shops in America from say 1850 to today. Already many of the folks who could give first hand stories are gone. Sigh... All best,
Brad Burt

Dad ran the Boston Film Center, gave me a camera and I walked the streets of Boston as a young kid taking black and whites and developing them in the dark room. Found Jack's Joke Shop by the Boston Common and went inside. Graduated from jokes to the magic in the back of the store. Found Hank Lee's Magic Factory and lived there on the weekends. This odd fellow named Phil Goldstein worked behind the counter, back then in the early 70's. Hey, the guy disappeared. I saw someone who looked like him recently at a magic convention, said, "Hi Phil" and he glared at me and said, "It's MAX!" Hmmm. Also, this other guy, Mr. Lee, was always pressing me to actually buy something. All I had was my allowance, which my father quickly stopped when it became apparent to him that I was spending all of it on magic tricks. Anyway, I left a little note for Mr. Lee some time ago, as he was never at the store when I visited in the later years. I had just purchased a used Mismade Lady illusion which was sitting on the showroom floor, probably the most expensive item in the store at the time. Finally, the kid had paid for something!

Paul Diamond's Magic Shop in Ft. Lauderdale circa 1970. I had visited a small shop inside a McCrory department store in '69. Paul's shop was my first real magic emporium and as touted as "the world's most unsual store"! Later in 1971, I visited the Magic Shop at Disney World's Grand Opening in Orlando, Fl. & I went to the Daytona Magic Shop (Daytona Beach) in 1978. Daytona's Magic Shop is still in business and there are two shops in nearby Melbourne, Fl. Orlando has a couple shops also.
Cardamagically, Dom :)

Mine was a magic shop in Canoga Park, California called Witchcraft. The owner was a professional magician and his wife was a palm reader of sorts. They sold it to man by the name of Phil Sherman who changed the name to Magic World.
