I took a long break in magic, a fast of sorts, to clear my mind of all the bad magic I liked, good magic I couldn't remember, and so-so magic I didn't want to perform anymore.
When I came back I ran into Hollingworth's Drawing Room Deceptions, Jeff Ezell's lecture notes that teach McClintock's Twist, and Harry Lorayne's Close-Up Card Magic.
I fell in love with G.H. and J.E.'s sometimes knuckle-bending routines, and loved the non-knuckle-breaking routines that run rampant in Lorayne's C-UCM.
So far I've practiced, quite thoroughly and slowly, Revelation, Take Me To Your Leader, and The Apex Ace. Do any of you Lorayne-reading magicians suggest any other routines out of the book that may read bad but play big, or that you just enjoyed learning?
For the record, I Will read the entire book. I will. But I'll read it piece by piece as I read other books and notes, too. It'd be nice to hear some recommendations so I have some specifics to concentrate on FIRST when I go to Lorayne's book.
(Only stressing the fact because I've seen people yell on here before as if the poster didn't intend to read through the entirety of a book/mag/etc.)
Thanks

One of the first routines I learned was "Big Fella, Little Fella", and I did a variation on "The Little Card That Wasn't There" (using another slight besides the turnover change) a lot.
But my favorite 30 years later still remains "STOP!" and is the one I use more than any other card trick and it seems like one of the closest things to real magic I've seen. It's only about a page and a half if that long description-wise, but boy, is it powerful.
Enjoy the book - it happens to be one of my favorites and was my first real magic book.

And I'm afraid to tell you this 'cause it may literally blow your mind - pick up LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, for the re-write and updating, upgrading, etc., of Close-Up Card Magic, AND FOUR OTHER BOOKS OF MINE. Do it quick, because I may just "hit" you with THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 2 - then you'll just be left far, far, behind! HARRY LORAYNE. (Interesting that noone has mentioned my Out Of This Universe.)

Ah, Out Of This Universe... That is indeed one I should've mentioned. I honestly don't think I've ever performed Out Of This World, only Out Of This Universe, and it has also been a mainstay for me throughout the decades since my brother gave me Close-Up Card Magic.
When my nephew in Texas wanted to learn card magic, I suggested Lorayne: The Classic Collection and we actually stopped at a magic shop on the way to the airport and he bought it. I was just recommending the Collection to a fellow yesterday when I was at Denny & Lee's new Studio - which is huge and a must-see itself.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Harry!

Sorry Mr. Lorayne but I've been using Harris' Galaxy effect.
However, for the past couple of hours I've been performing "Stop!" and "Take Me To Your Leader" over and over, getting the moves down.
Now you go and blow my mind with this book information and I feel like throwing my cards all over the room and going bananas!
Thank you for the info Mr. Lorayne, I was hoping you'd stop in. I love how every other effect in the book is one you've been performing for years - I can't imagine the terrible composition that an audiences' brain is left in when you finish entertaining them with magic!
Anyone else have any favorites??

Learn Out Of This Univers, Kreate. Then perform it - when you really have it down. I'd like to know the reaction you get - the difference between that and Galaxy. Not important in the vast scheme of things - just would like to assuage my curiosity. Then, learn my Impromptu Out Of This World, from THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, and see the reaction you get with that. Again, I'd be curious to get your thoughts as, I'm sure, would many others. In any case, good luck. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

Yessiree, I certainly will without a doubt. I was just reading through it before I responded to this. It hasn't been closed in a few hours now. It's an interesting idea... I have a constant spectator that I practice things. Perhaps I'll try Galaxy and OOTU a while apart, then IOOTW when I get my hands on your book.
Again, a most humble thanks from a nobody to a legendary somebody.

I'm receiving personal emails from some asking if they can purchase LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION directly from me. Of course you can and I much prefer that you do. And I'll be glad to autograph the book for you. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

Mr Lorayne and all others,
I was just smacked in the face for the first time by the excellent Lazy Man's Card Trick. Just wanted to note that I don't believe I'll ever be able to forget this, ever. Ever.
What a wonderful piece.

J. Dunaway: You have two things - good taste, and - a looong way to go with my books! But you've started and one h*** of a pleasant journey. HARRY LORAYNE. (Incidentally, if you want to see Lazy Man's Card Trick performed, it's on volume 2 of my "Best Ever" DVD set.)

Another great card trick from there is the Elmsley Fan Prediction, I believe it's called...I had C-UCM for a few years before I saw Darwin Ortiz perform it on my college campus when I was in grad school in 1988. Completely baffled me..then I thought, "Gee, that looks familiar."...LOL. As I recall, he also performed the Apex Ace, as well as Lorayne's Poker Deal...Great book, no doubt.

If this is the same trick that Al Koran used to perform on occasion, it's a dandy. I was recently going through some back issues of The Linking Ring, and found a version by The Great Nixon -- in 1956. I think Dante did a similar piece in his show.

Close-up Card Magic for $129.95? Huh. I got mine for $38 and have seen it elsewhere for as low as $25. What's the deal?
Anyway, my wife is getting me Classic Collections for my birthday this month. Very excited.

I paid $23 dollars for mine. I don't know what a deluxe editon is but seems overpriced to me.

I won't even mention The Moving Pencil...
or Tell My Fortune (which might be the strongest thing you can do with a pack of cards under the right circumstances)
............oops.

Great great book. I find all of Harry Lorayne's books to be full of great material. I've gone back so C-UCM and still find stuff. I guess sometimes your brain is not in the right mind set for a trick to jump out at you.
