Have any of you ever seen the pepper's ghost illusion done in miniature? (Like, dollhouse size?) I'm thinking of building something for my annual Halloween display and need some guidance from someone who has some experience with this type of illusion on a small scale.

Check out "Eisenheim's Ghost" in The Wizards' Journal #13 on my site, or its easier earlier cousin "Ghost Box" in The Wizards' Journal #4. Both were designed and used as front porch Halloween Illusions.

To answer OP...yes. There was a Star Trek toy out featuring the Bridge and it had a Transporter using the effect. There was even the sound effect when you push the button.

If I recall correctly, they had one at the old Caesar's Magical Empire in Vegas; it featured a little Max Maven doing . . . something I can't remember.

I made one of these when I was very young. I used to love it, wish I could remember where I got the info to make it from.

I have an actual Peppers Ghost Illusion box, it was built by Wilcox magic in 1979. The approx. size is 3 ft square, it is large enough to vanish/appear a life size talking skull or large rabbit. It is quite a remarkable thing to see and great at my Halloween magic shows. You can see this in action on my collection homepage at: http://www.freewebs.com/caputocollection/
This is the actual skull disappearing, it is not doctored up. Perhaps in the future if time permits I may build a few of these, maybe even smaller to vanish a decorative figurine, etc. Best, Chuck |

Henry Dircks actually created the effect as a miniature so that he could pitch it to theaters. From what I understand, it would have looked pretty good. It was essentially a small box which the spectator could look down into to see the effect. It was constantly turned down however due to the extreme renovations to the stage required to perform it. The idea was then taken by John Henry Pepper and modified slightly to be put on stage at the Polytechnic.
From my experience with the technique it's even easier in miniature simply because there is much less glass to work with so weird reflections etc are easier to avoid.

A few years ago, Rick Haslett made a few really nice change boxes using this principle. The effect as he built it looked amazing; like a camera trick. You might see if he'd sell you the plans. His website is:

You can buy the halloween videos at this website:
http://www.bigscreamtv.info On a whim, I bought volumes 1,2, and 3 a number of years ago at Spencer Gifts the day after Halloween (they were half off). Basically, they take the pepper's ghost illusion and combine with your TV and a dvd player to produce Hollywood style special effects. I built the crystal ball cabinet from the third dvd and it's a hit every Halloween. One of the numerous ghosts that appears in the crystal ball is a goateed magician wearing a turban telling cheesy one liners and doing the "think of a card" trick. If you're really into Halloween, I also recommend the "X-treme Haunted House Makeover" dvd made by the same people. It has do-it-yourself ideas to create some nifty haunted house effects. I used several of the ideas with great success at our Halloween parties. This upcoming Halloween, I plan to buy the "Monster Eyes" dvd to add another effect to our party. Best, Rob |

Anyone interested in building their own Pepper's ghost should also have a look at:
http://www.halloweenmonsterlist.info/ Project titles: Haunted Hotel Pepper's Ghost Goblin Greeter Cross-fader for Pepper's Ghost I also have an article reprinted from the turn of the 19th/20th centuries about constructing a 14"x7"x7.5" mantlepiece model of the Pepper's Ghost Illusion. The instructions suggest dry cell batteries and rheostats, but it wouldn't be a problem to update the electrics a bit. Anyone want the ref? cheers, Lin |

When I was a teenager I built a miniature Pepper's Ghost using a wooden crate of some sort, with spst switches controlling the lighting, and a sheet of plexiglass for the gimmick. The operation was crudely sequential: Light on subject, light off, next light on, new subject "appears." Even with the incredibly primitive engineering and workmanship, the effect was startling...and quite popular at some school science fair or whatever it was for which the illusion was made. Well worth the investment of time and effort. BTW, two of the most commercially successful examples of Pepper's Ghost are close by here in SoCal: Disneyland's Haunted Mansion and Knott's Berry Farm's Mystery Lodge. Both worth visiting when in the area. Leland |
