In August last year I got a new costume made:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=217054&forum=17

Unfortunately, the costume stunk, cost be $500 and fell apart, the press studs falling off, the cuffs different sizes and the material fading after one wash.

I also got sick of being the 'clown' and ignored by older children and parents who thought I was for the little ones.

So this is my new costume. My hair looks weird and my t-shirt isn't tucked in properly but I hope you like it!

(no suggestions please! I'm too happy with it!)

I like it. Easy to look after, too.

You'll always be a clown. I've been called a clown while wearing a grey suit.

I did say a few years ago that a t-shirt could work well as the base of a smart costume but some australian geezer laughed at me....

Sorry Nick, I really liked the other costume better. (At least I liked the colors better.) It tied you to your show.

Nick,

I really like the new costume. Looks a lot more comfortable. As much as I like vests, every time I wear one, I seem to sweat a lot more.

The no collar shirt without a tie just isn't me. How does everybody else feel about a tie? Perhaps the Australian audiences are more casual. I don't know, but the mom's always compliment me on my clothing.

I don't get it! The colours are exactly the same and my show is blue, yellow and red!

Al - I don't wear ties very often because they just don't suit me. With my fat neck, a closed collar is very unflattering. I've tried to keep to open collars and t-shirts for that reason. I do love a nice tie though! does your tie ever get in the way of the juggling?

Ken - I agree - this jacket is much cooler and is made off wool. I find vests make me sweat up a storm leading to visible pit stains.

All of my ties come to the waist for that very reason, and most of my shirts are short sleeve, because juggling is easier when my arms are bare. I do wear either suspenders (braces) or a vest, because along with the hat it sends the message that I am an entertainer.

I always start my show with my jacket on, but after two tricks I dramatically take it off, which usually reveal a loud pair of suspenders.

I think that look would only work with suspenders. Modern ties and trousers are designed so that the tie point should just touch the top button of the pants. If you want the tie to go waist (about 2cm lower) then you would need to wear higher pants.

Higher pants only look good with suspenders!

I see that the general description of my ties was too general for you, so the detailed explination is most of my ties are silk Garcia, Helfinger, and Cardon they cost about $36 each retail. They are roughly 59" long untied, and aproximately 20" long tied (from the top of the knot). I generally like to have the wider end 1/2" to 1" longer than the slim end when I wear them. I'm not good with the metric system so that is the best I can do on the tie thingy, and just for the record I love it when things get real technical.

I get my suspenders from Germany, and I have them in 20 different colors, but that is a whole nother question.

What type of silk do you use? And what sort of weave? Is that $36 including tax? Do you tie a half or full Windsor? Is it left or right handed knot? What part of Germany are the suspenders from? What is the total area of the tie? In inches? In metric?

Seriously though, a huge number of people look stupid in ties because the fail to tie them properly leaving the hanging down over their crotch like a fig leaf or so short you can see their shirt buttons.

I am very fussy about my right handed half winsor with a creasy in the middle of the knot. I buy them wholesale at Marshalls, and the Burlington coat factory for $12 each.

I do some kind of windsor knot, too.

Does a tie look ok if your top shirt button is undone?

I had no idea that the crease had a name. I have seen TV news anchor men with a double crease, but I'm not skilled enough to achieve that look. I make the dent because it is the only way to get a half windsor knot to lay streight. I get all of my fashon ideas from watching TV anchor men, and I think that polititions for the most part are fashion tragedies especially Tony Blair those English people make their ties look like scarves, and I'm not real fond of their shirt collars either.

The crease is called a dimple.=)

I like too get a double dimple if I can, but if I don't it doesn't bother me usually. I tie a full windsor by the way. I like the way the full windsor makes a more triangular knot, instead of the rounder, more square knot of of the half windsor. I really have a thing for bow ties though. I have found it is easy for me to get really really loud bow ties that I like for performing. But, for Church and business, I almost always wear a neck tie.

As for your outfit Nick, if it works for you, and your audiences like it, more power to ya.

Thank goodness.
I saw the old costume in a thread yesterday, and I didn't have the heart to say how silly it looked - for the very reason of looking like a clown, as you said.

Now you look a lot more sensible, and the outfit will still draw attention but from more people.

Secondary thoughts:
Where did you get the red jacket? I keep trying to find one but I never seem to be able to.
Did you make the shirt yourself? I made a red one with a white rabbit once, but it was low quality so I've been looking for a manufacturer.

I had the jacket tailor made here in Melbourne. The shirts also came from Melbourne. They are made from a special plastic that does not peel or fade. The print will last longer then the shirt. They cost $40 each.
