Thirteen to me looks like a dynamite trick. I figured it out because I have a trick called "Vantage Point" from Colombini that uses the same method although uses totally different handling. Does that mean laymen will figure it out? I don't think so.
I also figured out "Pavel's walking knot" the first time I saw it. Does that mean laymen will figure it out? I don't think so as this trick is usually done before large audiences. It certainly wouldn't be if it was so easy to figure out.
Many magicians forget that 1. Most lay people don't have a clue when it comes to figuring out tricks if they are done well. and 2. Most lay people including myself first and foremost want to be entertained by magic. If you can do that, the simplest tricks can be effective even if "magicians" can easily figure them out.

Well I be.

The potential for this effect is unlimited.
It was my opener for my last show ( I promised I would not repeat effects) and it got great reactions. First, I missed guessing then missed 3 more times with my insurance policy. I then showed 52 on 1 then I talked about lucky numbers and brought out the deck. Because it is a prediction effect, it makes sense to put the deck away.

Thanks to Jeff I realized my question was not precise enough: to add a layer of deception I wanted to start with two decks shown, putting away the fake prediction deck soon, however.
This way the audience has seen two decks and the idea is planted in their heads. Then I thought about a visible pretended deck switch, where I handle two decks but use only the same one all the time...

I think this looks great- even though I was able to figure it out. With a little bit of thought, and about 2 seconds of misdirection (have them look at their card and you're done), you could feasibly work with two decks, on the table, full view from the beginning through the end.

I've been doing magic for 15+ years, been to a lot of conventions, did a lot of reading, etc., and a friend of mine completely fooled me with this trick over Christmas. I was trying to mentally reconstruct the trick with a memorized deck, etc. Since then I've shown it to several friends in the local ring who have also been doing magic for quite a long time and none could tell the method. As a test I showed my nephew who is in college 10-15 times in a row making the conditions seem more and more fair each time and neither him or my sister had any idea what the method was.

So, all this to say that I think the method is a fooler, however the entertainment value for a layman will never beat a card changing values, "in their hands." I've had mixed reactions from this effect from laymen, and magicians have been puzzled by it. If you like fooling your local magicians which I get a kick out of occasionally then this is fun to play with.

As for laymen, the benefit is that it can be reset right in front of the spectator. I've tried both putting the matching card back in the "original" prediction deck which requires you to put the deck away and reload and pull out the "other" thirteen deck as well as just adding it back to the top of the "thirteen" deck at the end. Sometimes if I add it to the 13 deck and put it away spectators will comment that I'm putting it in the wrong deck and I've responded with, "I'll fix it later."

The other benefit is that I don't think they will be able to reconstruct the affect, there are no "moves" and everything seems pretty dang fair. It doesn't require a table if you deal into the spectator's hand so you can do it walk around.

As far as reactions, if you are a mentalist and have enough time to spend with the spectator to do the effect justice then it'll probably get a decent reaction. If you do restaurants and want to switch out items for your repeat customers then this could be a way to connect with them. If you are into eye-popping visual effects and need to get to a lot of people in a short amount of time then you will have little use for this effect. For me, I use this for repeat customers who have seen some of my other material as well as friends, family and other magicians.

There's my 2 cents.

This never fails to fry laymen. Very simple to do but yet gets superb reactions!

Almost any card trick ( miracle ace cutting, triumph, etc. ) will always have difficulty competing with magic that takes place in their hands. The most beautiful 3 Fly routine would have a hard time topping a shelled coins across in their hands.

And the nemesis of the most clever magic tricks/brilliant sleight of hand.........the bunnies!

I just got this last week after my first visit to the Magic Apple when they demoed it for me. I love it. It passed the wife test with flying colors!

Perusing the prior posts I see others have mentioned it would be nice to have an extra sticker so two deck could be displayed in a casual manner at an appropriate moment. Wish there was a way to purchase such a sticker. JB Magic could have put it on the other tuck box. But I'll willingly buy a sticker if anyone knows a way.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Slight issue is that the original stickers are gloss complicating it a bit. May have to past on a thin laminate to make it glossy.

Did you think to call Mark Mason and ask if he would sell an extra sticker or two? https://www.jbtvusa.com/

Like Lassen, you are always better off calling Mark. I can't remember a time he didn't answer or call back if he was traveling in an airplane at the time. His number is on the top of his site. I have called him many times to get or discuss items he might carry that are not listed on the site.

Thanks Poof-Daddy. I can see I didn't pay close attention to your post! "Call" rather than "email"! Gotcha!

As an extra- it’s an easy enough DIY project.
Why call it common sense when it's so rare ?

Yes, the suggestion of a color photocopy gets close as a DIY solution. However my copy, though close, has a darker yellow, and it is not on a glossy plastic tape. The difference is obvious when the two labels are side by side -- but when seen separately, and after a passage of time of course, it is probably close enough. I'm probably worrying too much -- but I have been busted by some really observant people. Sometimes the bust is just due to accidental circumstances, e.g. a gleam of light off the glossy one is noticed, then the dupe one when shown in same lighting doesn't gleam.

I could make two copies and paste one on the spare box and the other on top of the provided gimmick -- but I'm loathe to do that for what may be obvious reasons.

Another idea might be to spray the paper copy with a gloss sealer. I think I'll give that a go.

Of course, in the mean time, I just use the one pack!
