I am looking for someone who does custom work with neon and/or florescent light artist. I have an idea for an effect so this person should be able to be trusted with magical secrets. They should also be able to work not only with the glass but also with the electronics. They should be willing to do custom work. Anyone out there know of someone who could fit the bill?

Hi Kipp,
I know of a small shop in Vancouver, Washington that appears to do good work. I've never worked with them directly, but have seen samples of what they do and it looks good. I don't know how well they would work with a magician. I have it on my list to talk with them about puting together a couple of lights for Steinmeyer's Neon illusion. I'll dig out their contact info and post it today. Thanks, Richard |

If the effect is something you can build except for the lights, you may try a search for Flexible Neon Lighting. It's rope lighting that has a neon look and appears to be easy to work with.

Hi Kipp,
Here is another idea. Electroluminescent wire might fit your needs. It is a flexible wire filled with phosphor. When electricity is applied to it through an inverter, it glows. It's not as bright as neon but simular in appearence. Also note, it is thinner than neon too, so I don't know if it will work with your specific needs. I have used it many times and it works well for me. I hope this helps. magically, John

Richard,
Thank you. I'll be waiting. Joe, I appreciate the thought, but the Flexible Neon Lighting will not work for what I want to do. John, I've seen that stuff. My sign maker uses it. But I'm afraid that is not what I'm looking for either. It's too small in diameter. What I'm looking for is glass, similar in diameter to the kind used in the new low energy florescent light bulbs, or in the older neon signs. But it won't be a neon sign, so most of the neon sign workers I've contacted are not much help. Sometimes artists will use this as a form of light art. I think that is what I need, an artist more than a sign maker. Any more ideas from anyone? Until we appear again, Kipp Sherry Day 4 |

Hi Kipp,
You need to speak to Micheal. He made a wicked costume once that had a bunch of flexible neon tubes in it if memory serves correct. Drop him a PM and ask about it. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/bb_pr......ser=3379 Best, Tim Day 20 |

Kipp,
Does your lighting system need to be self-contained and run on batteries, or is an AC cord OK? Are the light tubes all straight, or do you need something curved? How long, how many segments, how quickly must they turn on/turn off, do they need to turn on individually in a pre-programmed manner, or in groups... It might help to know more about what you're looking for, without tipping the effect or M.O. Just a shot in the dark: Would a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) work for your application? These are used to backlight LCDs. I just replaced the CCFL lamp in my aging laptop, and prior to buttoning the laptop up I powered it up with the lamp exposed just to make sure the new bulb worked. It's amazing how BRIGHT the little lamp is. It actually hurts my eyes to look at it, and it's only 2 mm in diameter. Perhaps you could use one of these gems inside of a glass tube to get the effect you want. The lamps are available in different colors and sizes. Maybe you could put one inside of a color sleeve to get other colors, if that's your thing. Check out http://www.allelectronics.com and search on "CCFT" for some relatively inexpensive examples. High voltage is required for these lamps, so I would enlist the help of someone who knows about working with high voltage stuff if you want to go this route. All Electronics has CCFT inverters that run on 12 Volts DC, so battery operation would be an option. Digi-Key has a wider selection but is pricier: http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/......rds=CCFL Good luck and be careful, especially with the high voltage stuff. Regards, Ross Hironaka |

Timothy,
Thanks for the directional pointer. I sent him a PM, but he said your memory is fading. He is not the person. Ross, That's an interesting concept. I hadn't thought about that. I took a look and my initial reaction is that they won't work as is, they too would have to be modified. But it is a technology that I had not explored so it does give me a new direction. Thanks. To everyone else, I still need an artisan who can mold this type of light into custom shapes. Still looking for leads. Until we appear again, Kipp Sherry Day 21 |

Sorry Kipp, I thought I had posted this, but the place I was thinking about either moved or went out of business. Last time I drove by, the shop was closed up.
Another Idea would be to check with the local arts schools or colleges. They may know of a local artist who could help you out. Thanks, Richard |

Contact my fellow sword swallower friend Martin_Ling, he's a newer Café member and working with someone to create a neon sword for swallowing. The guy he's dealing with is very knowledgeable and has made recommendations as far as the construction shape, size and electronics that will need to be involved

OK, I'll give it a try. I'm a ham (seriously ) - amateur radio operator. I know a fellow ham, Jacob Fishman, who has an electronics background, and also works in glass and neon as his main profession. Jake has done some great work of all sorts, including maintaining museum installations around the country. He's a great guy. Hope he can help.
Here's his website: http://www.lightwriters.com You can mention my name - Michael Miller - and also my call sign, KG9ML.

Danny,
I did a search for Martin_Ling and it looks like his account here at the Café is gone. Do you have another way I contact him? Michael, I called Jacob. He said you were in fact a gentleman. Initially he didn't think that he could help me, but he is willing to look further. Thanks for the tip. Everyone else. I'm still looking for any possible leads here. If bendable glass tubing is what you need, you might try a laboratory supply store or glass blowing supply. I think the glass tubes come in standard lengths, a variety of diameters and colors if from a glass blowing supply Co. It can be heated on a Bunsen burner or propane torch and bent by hand. http://www.glass-supply.com/catalog/ I do hope this will lead to a solution for you. Respectfully, Tom Bartlett
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.
