(I've done a search and can't find anything relating to my question)
So guys, in your opinion(s), what are the classic mentalism effects and what are the long lost hidden gems?... Look forward to your replies and my warmest regards to you all. Martin King |

I have my own personal opinions upon this, but they're personal! |

Martin,
I think you would be hard pressed to find a modern effect that doesn't owe something to a 'classic'. If you are looking for someone to point you in the direction of a long lost effect that no one else knowns about; an open forum would hardly be the place for that, eh?
If you are not cheating, you are only cheating yourself.

I don't think there are many hidden gems in mentalism, just a lot of forgotten ones...
its hard to recommend any, what might be a diamond in the rough for one, may be dog-dirt for another... maybe do what I do - every month, buy a few of the old magic/mentalism pdfs from lybrary and see what you can find in those...or maybe join the learned pig site?

There's a bookless book test in 13 steps that I've done to good response. I've never heard anyone else speak of it though.

Great minds think alike by Punx in 13 S (page 192.) I think this type of thinking paved the way far a lot of todays thinking in DR. Yes, there is DR in 13 S. It is not the new invention many claim it to be.

Malkav,
I just posted a question in Secret Sessions that pertains to the effect you mentioned. |

I would interpret 'hidden gems' with an effect that was published perhaps in an old magazine or an overlooked booklet, which turns out to be a great trick.
But I have to agree with Abraxus, what is a gem depends on your needs and wants. And luckily so otherwise we would all be doing the same 3 tricks. My recommendation is to read a lot. Read a lot means for me to read over at least a decade every day for at least an hour - preferably longer. Read across the ages and across disciplines. That is read new and old magazines, find some rare books and read the new releases. Read not just mentalism, but read about illusions, kids-magic, clowning, acting, juggling, theater ... Once you have lived through such an intense period of reading you will have found more hidden gems than you can use. One tip: There are no hidden gems on DVDs - not yet - perhaps in 50 years.

I'm not looking for people to show me where all the hidden gems are, nor where the classics are.
I was just interested to know what you (everybody) are (is) using, it's more of a 'good for you/kudos' kinda thing than a sneaky 'find out what you're doing so that I can do it also' thing. Here's my personal opinions on the classics vs the latest effects... I've read so many times, that all the top professionals say that we should look to all the classiscs (even to the extent of looking back through the books of 'yesteryear' and looking for the effects that no-one performs nowadays) and not the latest effects! I've seen this message so many times that I've started to think that there's something in it. Forward to today, I've just aqquired an effect/routine that was produced some eighty (or more) years ago...WOW! I'll be practising then rehearsing then performing it very soon!!! |

In that case, basil horwitz work, al koran's legacy and nelsons encyclopedia of mentalism are the things I'm re-investigating recently...
