I'm looking for a rope through body to end my street show. Does anyone know what this routine is and where I can learn it??
I do not want to use gimmicked rope eg hang em high. http://www.magicvideodepot.com/main/memb......tiation/ Also is it angle sensitive or can it be done surrounded?? |

Well...there are several versions around and I'm not sure which one you're talking about. Unfortunately, the link above does not work since it is for a "members only" location and one must sign in to view it.

Check Tarbell or Daryl's DVD set on Ropes. I'll take a look later and find the book/chapter or DVD set #. All non-gimmicked.

Thanks guys..
Don't have Tarbell yet (they are on my must have list). I have just ordered vol 1 & 2 of Daryl's rope dvd's and they should be here early next week. I do hope it is on one of these. |

The simplest is "ROPES" through body- two ropes used with the "Grandmother's Necklace" principle. It is usually performed with a thread gimmick by those who are tied to "the way it's always been done." However, it can be performed totally impromptu with no gimmicks, setting itself up as you place the ropes behind your back. Ditto with the ROPES through neck.
There are two ungimmicked single rope through neck routines shown on the Wiz Kid Rope Magic DVD (on my site); a Grant version and the Tenkai version.

There's also the Eye thru the Needle trick. Where the body is pulled thru the eye of a needle by a rope. It's basically the same illusion. I have it but have not tried it yet. I should. it looks like fun.

One of the nice things about the old Supreme Magic’s “Thru the Eye of a Needle” is that it is a one rope Grandmother’s Necklace trick. The real beauty of this trick is that it plays huge! Given the props; a length rope, a giant needle, a silk handkerchief, a couple of bracelets (or tea cups or whatever) and three spectators to help (two men and a woman) make it visually interesting, give room for plenty of performer personality and banter with the helpers, and lift the trick to an “illusion” level. There is a bad angle but it is easily covered if necessary (I use a Super girl cape). I've used this trick off and on for several decades now. In fact, I've built three of them since Supreme went out of operation (the rope does get dirty over time).
As good is the older U. F. Grant’s “cutting a lady in half” from his “Nite Club Illusions” booklet. It was designed to be done surrounded and has no bad angles. Again it uses a single length of ungimmicked rope. Like Thru the Eye of a Needle it uses three spectator helpers. It is great for the streets and plays big. Then there is my present personal favorite the Iron Garrote (chain thru the neck). My routine is posted here on the Café. The search function is presently down or I would give a direct link to it. I have played it for bike (motorcycle) gatherings (fun runs, poker runs, bike weekends, etc.). The nature of the prop plays well for this group. There is a bad angle that is easy to cover and goes unnoticed (again the nature of the prop). In rethinking your criteria of no-gimmick-able-to-do-surrounded I believe that none of the versions relying on the Grandmother’s Necklace principle truly meets it. About the only version of rope thru body is U. F. Grant’s version (published in the late 40’s). It uses a single length (12 or so feet) of ungimmicked rope. The effect is usually staged with three spectators, two big men and a petite woman. The rope is wrapped around the woman. The men tug and tug and the rope tightens (painfully even!). At any given point the rope can be made to pass right through the woman’s body. Everything is left in the spectator’s hands for examination. There is nothing to find! It is a killer trick.

Hello:
Another version of the Grandmother's Necklace principle is Viking's "Walking thru a Riboon" which is angle-proof. It uses a tube to hide the gimmicked area - I'll bet it can be done with rope, instead of gross-grain ribbon. I think you can still get this from Viking Magic. Ron |

Harry,
Do you know where I can find the U.F. Grant version?? Ron, Thanks, but I want to use rope and no additional props if possible. |

The version Harry Murphy is describing sounds more like Douglas Hood's "Cutting a Lady in Halves" which you will find in the Stewart James Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks, which if you had a copy, would give you several versions of rope penetrations from which to choose. The book is readily available (even from Amazon.com ) and will give you many other rope effects to use in your street performances.

My rope thru neck is on the Aldo colombini video. My version called RASAR is on the ICOM site. My 4 loops at once thru legs; called Quatro, will be on the Dayton rope DVD Leaping LIzards is re-mastering.
Ignore them if you wish; but they are easy, impromptu and strong. |

The single and double rope thru neck is in the Ency. of Rope Tricks (and many other places I'm sure)
The double rope thru body is likely using the Grandmother's Neclace priciple, but w/o the little something extra. This is taught in Wilson's complete Course & in Daryls Rope dvd's (but I don't know which volume). Many variations of that method are in the Ency of Rope Tricks, which also has a single (ungimmicked) rope thru body. Those using the grandmother's necklace should not have people directly behind you, the single rope thru body could have people standing anywhere. John

Pavel has a very cool Rope Through Neck and Body effect in his DVD, The Creative Magic Of Pavel, published by L and L. It has the combination of a silk vanish, followed by the reappearance of it on the rope as it passes through the neck, as well as a penetration of the rope through the body with the boxers of the performer being pulled out.
I also have a version of an instantaneous ropes through neck and body effect in my dvd http://www.PowerfulRopeMagic.com Jeremy |

Yes, Jeremy's DVD will open your eyes and show you how easy and truely magical rope effects can be. I can't tell you how good his DVD really is.
I have totally redesigned my street busking act and will be doing a 15 minute show with just ropes. I'll let you know how big the hats are. Peter |

Qua-Fiki worked out a very clever three way penetration using his Blendo Red, White and Blue ropes. He ties the red rope around his neck, the white rope around his waist and the blue rope around one of his legs (he can do both legs, but it is rather awkward to try it). Then he grabs all the ends of the ropes and pulls and they all penetrate their respective body parts. It is included as a bonus effect in his Blendo Rope routine in The Wizards' Journal #16 on my site. Oh, what the heck... here it is: http://www.magicnook.com/WIZj16/WIZ16-06......Fiki.htm
and yes, he gets all the money sent in for this one. I just gave him his first paycheck for July sales and got the shock of my life when he told me he was spending it on school supplies to get ready for the coming school year. Whatever happened to decadent youth and their frivilous spending habits? When I was his age, I would have spent it on junk food and pinball games.
