I recently had new cards done that are very professional looking, with a nice background with a photo of red velvet curtains and an old fashioned microphone.(I am primarily a ventriloquist)
There has been good response to them. One person even said they saw the mike, and that I am ventriloquist and thought of Edgar Bergen. I have mentioned it on another board I belong to and people (performers) seem to feel the opposite - that you NEED your photo on the card. What do folks here think?

Neale,
I'm ugly, so I place my photo on the card so people aren't scared when I arrive. The other half of that is my cards are usually handed out following shows. When they see the card and the picture, they instantly remember me. Photo or not, as long as the card represents your business in the way you want - it shouldn't matter what is on there. I think your curtain and microphone sound classy. |

We have some cards with our photo on them and some without. The photo ones do look nice.

To me a high quality photo business card is like your mini resume. When you see a performer in a costume women ask themselves "is this the kind of person I would feel comfortable having in my home as a guest"? There is no such message on a card that has just text on it.

Thanks for all the input folks. I have researched this online and in other forums and it seems that a lot of people for a lot of different reasons have gone away from photos on cards, so there is definitely 2 schools of thought on the issue.
I guess whatever works for you is best for you to use, and for me, for now, I will stick with this new one. It ties into my other advertising and stuff, so we will test and track the results.

For me I prefer words over pictures, I have never liked pictures on cards I think its just a preference cant think of any reasons why. Although saying that I do like good quality bus cards as they do reflect whom you are, if they are plastic and horrible to feel it doesn't look good but a card made out of actual card! with sleight embroided pattern maybe a hint of colour well that to me screams professional.
luke with the greatest respect of course, I'm not here to start a flame war and this is just my opinion I am sure many will disagree and my comments have no bearing on anyone specific.

I have my caricature on my card. After I get some professional head shots done, I might use that on my card. The theory being that cards with photos on them do not get thrown away.

probably not it just seems if you have a different view nowadays its easier to put a disclaimer on it than to try and justify yourself a million times. luke

When I send out post cards I wouldn't think of sending them out without my picture on them, so what is the differance between a post card, and a business card? The business card with just text on it will be the first one in the trash can.

I put Sylvers pic on my postcards.
They get kept. We get booked. If my picture was on them...maybe not so much. Gwyd |

It TOTALLY depends on what market you are going for, IMO.
When I am working corporate events, I use either a real PARCHMENT or Double-laid card which simply states my name in a classic font, with an email in the lower left, and a phone in the lower right, and VERY SMALL. The name will be a larger/decent size. This is more of a "CALLING" card. If you're mr. family entertainer (especially dealing with kids) or somewhere in between, I think full color/photo is the way to go. But contrary to what some "guru's" and "marketing experts" may tell you, DON'T make it double sided. There is nothing more annoying then meeting a potential act or client and not being able to make notes to enter into my client database later. Keith

Most family market clients don't seem to care for making notes on the back, they are just pleased to get a magician's card. However, there is enough white space on my photo to jot down a price or make a small note.

FIRST:
Know Thy Market (And your desired outcome) then simply suite to fit. SECOND: KNOW the difference between "BUSINESS Cards" and Calling Cards... again, then suite to fit. THIRD: Cards are CHEAP, you are allowed to have more than just one.

Keith doesn't put his photos on business cards because it would cut into a profitable side business of selling his promo pictures on eBay.
BTW - I have one autographed pic of him left - $250 or best offer. |
