I've been racking my brain as to how I can get more bookings locally. Up to this point, I have usually booked parties or events through word-of-mouth, referrals by friends, or someone calls me after seeing "Elegant Illusion Entertainment- Magic Entertainment for All Ages" (and my phone number) on my car as advertisement.

I'm wondering if a press release to local press would help...

I understand you would normally send out a release to tell about an upcoming event or publicity stunt. Is it feasible to write a release and not have a booked gig? After all, the purpose of the press release is to generate media interest, right?

I've reviewed several websites concerning "Writing a Winning Press Release..." but none of them have helped with a release without a booking. What would you put in it? Do you highlight your performance resume or wait until they contact you?

I'm interested to hear from those who have gone this route and what they've recieved from sending a release!

Bryan,
Have you done anything lately? Moved to a new area? Attended a workshop? Performed anywhere interesting? Created a new effect? Been inspired by anyone to increase your business in tough economic times? Give it some thought and you will have an angle for creating an interesting story. Send it via e-mail and then hard copy to the editor targeted for "Human Interest" or "Community Interest". Some papers are much harder to crack, others need this type of local material. Releases can definitely stimulate business.

There are also Internet new release sites that can get wider distribution if the story is picked up. I believe Curtis uses them, you may want to check with him if you'd like a wider audience.

Bryan,
In my real job, I am PR director who work closely with the media. A press release typically works well to promote a specific event not really to generate interest for something that is not a specific "news story". Press releases typically get forwarded to assignment editors who are basically show bookers. If you don't fit into the show/edition that they are booking at the time, it will get trashed. Mass press releases probably won't get you very far at all. You need to do a little target marketing. My suggestion is to pick a local entertainment publication/alternative news paper or local talk type show and market yourself directly to them. PM me and I can help you with a strategy to help you promote yourself through the various media outlets.

The above are right.
And what you need to make a press-release work is a strong "hook".

That said, I'm good at getting press interviews PM me Bryan,
and we'll talk about what I can do.

Magically,

Yes, send a press release.

In fact, send them regularly. For your shows, appearances, new creations etc etc. If you create a product to sell, send a press release.

But make sure you know WHO to send it to. Call the newspaper, tv station, radio etc. Ask around. The right person is the most important person.

And don't get discouraged if you don't get printed right away.

Make it stupid proof. And include art. Anything to make the writers life easier etc.

Hey. Maybe I should create my own success program about getting TONS of FREE PUBLICITY!?!?!?!?
