I predict this to be a future classic, the impact is so strong I have found that even when performed badly, which I admit I have had a few bad performances while learning this, it still gets a great reaction. The gimmick is a true shocker when it's revealed that the matchbook is their selected card.

By now I imagine most of you have seen Lit by Dan Hauss and Dan White as performed by David Blaine on his recent TV special. David uses Lit in his regular work. I was speaking with Dan White today and Dan advised that Lit is THE strongest item in his repertoire (and Dan does some incredible magic). Dan advised that the reactions surpass anything he does. He just did a show last weekend and did it twice. On both occasions he got booked for new shows by the people he did it for. But in the end you can see it on TV, I can tell you how good it is, Dan can tell you how strong it plays, etc. but we'd like YOU to confirm this through your own use of Lit. So here’s what we'd like to do:
If you are an active performer out there performing professionally or semi professionally (not just for family, spouse, etc.) and are willing to TRY Lit for 10 or 12 times we'd like to send you one on us. This will be for the first 12-15 people who respond and are selected. We'd need to get you name, phone number, e-mail address, and an explanation of where you would use this and your performing background. From all registrants we will select 12-15 people and send you Lit on us as soon as we get it in (in about 10 days to two weeks approximately). In addition, we will send you a surprise or two. We'd ask you then write back to us privately (we'll send the selected people an e-mail address to send to) after trying it a number of times with feedback and testimonial’s If you love it like we do it would also be ideal to get some footage of you using it but that is not absolutely necessary. We may then select some of the feedback, footage, etc. and use it with your permission in ad copy, etc. We are so sure that people will USE and LOVE this we are willing to let YOU see for yourself on us. I am a big advocate of standing behind one's product as I have done with my effect Branded (shameless plug) and Dan agrees and has agreed this is a good idea for Lit. We want to put our money where our mouth is. Once you use Lit you will be hooked and you'll let others know. Please PM me if you are interested and ALL of the information requested (address, phone, etc.) must be supplied for consideration. If any information is missing we will not be able to consider you. We will only be notifying those selected. Thanks. Tim |

This is the same post as another newly created thread. Why so much eagerness?
How many Magicians does it take to advertise a trick? Three.. One to steal the trick. One to steal HIS trick. And one to write a good review.

Probably the same eagerness that drove you to read the continued thread on this effects' subject after you posted on the other 'same post' just a short time ago.

I really liked David Blaine's "Just think of a Card" effect with a Spectator's Signature/Matchbook transformation. The people really took the finale' with that.
I couldn't find the demo for this other version with the hybrid of just the card selection. Is there a video clip of LIT?

It is a great trick but...
It was just performed on national television and it is a HOT new item. I am thinking this might be the type of thing to get after "the dust settles". I never want to hear, "oh I saw ______ do that" from my audience. I might pick it up and just sit on it for a while... Tim, I love your Branded effect, but to be honest with you I'm glad Mr. Blaine DID NOT perform it on television. Otherwise I would be in the same shoes that I'm in with Lit. Don't get me wrong! I would have loved a free copy of this trick and I would have used it in my work as "payment". I guess my statements above are just me thinking out loud. How do others feel about this? David Blaine's latest special(which I enjoyed btw, breath of fresh air after being tortured by Angel) pulled in a huge amount of viewers, from what I understand the best ratings since April. That means a lot of people saw these effects. Should we be running out to do them? How long do these "stick" in our spectator's minds? What would you think if you saw a guy get up on stage at a local comedy club and tell the same jokes you just heard Dane Cook tell on his HBO special last week? Maybe this isn't the right place to talk about this, or is it? |

The fact that Blaine did it to the ultimate with the whole signature ending is definitely memorable.
Hearing that in this LIT version it would be tough to actually do in the real world is disappointing. That's the way I think it looked best. People can always say yeah, but David Blaine's effect is better, and hit you with questions like "Can you do it like David Blaine?" I'd still like to check out the trailer for this LIT version though. Anybody have a link? |

Hart, while I understand and appreciate your concern I am not sure it is valid. As an example, do biting coin, sponge balls, rising card, or invisible deck and you'll almost never hear "I saw XXX do that before". Also people just forget with VERY rare exceptions. An example here would be the two card Monte (Fechter effect) that David has done. I'd almost guarantee that if you did this no one would say "I saw David Blaine do that". It's a very memorable, hard hitting effect that David has done a lot. I'd suggest you try this effect and you'll USE it a LOT. It's not going to wow you with some new technology or clever gimmick but if you try it I'd bet it will get the strongest reaction from anything you do. We were all surprised at how strong it does play.

About the card being signed. I'm a HUGE proponent of having cards signed. Many times on a release, it's the first thing I ask. Mostly I just want to know if I have the option because I like to have a card left as a memento, not to always "prove" that I don't have duplicates, etc. If you have presented yourself convincingly, they will never suspect duplicates. Not every effect will be made demonstrably more powerful.
Case in point, The Biddle Trick. The card isn't signed and if performed correctly, you get gasps. To not perform the Biddle trick, because the card isn't signed, would be missing out on one of the greatest card effects ever created. Or, David Williamson's Torn and Restored transpo. Blaine did a version on his second special to Tyra Banks. The card isn't signed and...it's magic in their hands and is a miracle. As far as LIT goes, the miracle is going to be the transformation/morphing of the chosen, vanished card, into the matchbook...in their hands! I don't think the card being signed is an issue. Performing Magic successfully improves when you can "dance". While I doubt anyone would ever say "the card was signed when David did it", what if they did? Or, what if they said it on any effect you performed? Who cares! Don't freeze or think because of that ONE PERSON that effect isn't worth doing. Recover. Say "David only had it signed because he was TV, otherwise he doesn't bother. I'll show you something with a signed card David refuses to do on TV because he doesn't want other magicians to see it". And then do a miracle with a signed card. Anyway, it's a Dan Hauss/Dan White creation, produced by Papercrane and it was chosen to be performed on national television By David Blaine. And this DVD is only $29.00?

I think some of us are thinking a little to hard into this. The fact blaine did it will not be an issue. If for some reason someone did say "that's THE TRICK BLAINE DOES ON TV!!" You will probably look better given the fact everyone (lay people) thinks (David Blaine is like, THE magician.
So the fact you just performed a true mind blowing miracle that david blaine did on national television, In my mind, makes you look better. I can say if I was a huge fan of David Blaine and some magician performed something similiar and or the same as him for me, I would be pretty excited and blown away. My 2 cents.

Good points guys...
I agree, lay people don't remember effects like we do. But I think I might give it a few months. I want them to remember me and the trick I performed, not me performing a trick they just saw on TV a week ago. I don't think people remember two card monte like they remember him doing card through window(I still have people ask me about this YEARS after his first special), which is not just "another card trick" to them, neither is LIT. There is TONS of good magic out there and this trick will still be amazing in 3 months, ya know? That being said, lay people don't care(or remember for that matter) whether a card was signed or not, especially with this type of effect |

Heck do a little preshow if concerned and do burned initials into the thing... in any case, I got a lot of ideas of how to bizarre this thing up even more than it already is!

Maybe I'm not giving the spectator's the benefit of doubt, but I honestly don't think that someone will say, "Yea, but when David Blaine did it the card was signed." Magic that is hard hitting is hard hitting with or without a signed card.
My 2 cents. DO |

If the card is not signed then the effect is "He made the matchbook change into the Ace of Clubs. And the Ace of clubs was the same card I picked from the deck!"
It's a transformation, but it is not a card to impossible location effect. It's a good trick, but they will not believe the card they are holding is the SAME ace of clubs that they just picked from the deck. If the card IS signed then it becomes a combo transformation/card to impossible location effect, and they will believe it's the same card they picked (because it is). Both are good effects, but there is definitely a difference in what the audience percieves has happened if the card is or isn't signed. |
