Hello Steven
Michigan Magic Day 2009 was GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a blast as did the performers and all who stopped to comment on the show on Saturday night. We had a few small problems as any show this size has, however, nothing too drastic. The biggest problem was, David Kaplans sound system was on the same frequency as my main mic. We did not find out about this until show time which caused a half hour delay. I heard about one person who had some complaints. He said "I lost my "close up" steel folding chair early in the day getting up, could never get it back, was then forever delegated/banished to the back of the lecture area. I guess I should have stayed on my folding chair all day up front and never moved, or put my shoes on the chair when I got up. I kinda resented it that I could not get a decent seat the entire rest of the day. If the venue cannot provide a decent place for everyone to see, then those in the back should get 1/2 their money back- it should not always be a "rush to the front" just to see and hear the lecturer." This complaint came from one of the last magicians to register for Michigan Magic Day 2009. He did not even have the courtesy or backbone to voice the complaintes to me. This same person called us everything from "stupid" to "rude" and said about the performers "performer mumbles his funny lines to be heard only by the inner circle". I was at first insulted by his comments but then realized that he was the same person who complained that the Linking Ring had the audasity to review the Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic convention. His justification for that complaint being that not all IBM members are invited to the 4F convention. It seems that this Christian magician likes to complain. I will not lose any sleep over it mainly because what everyone else had to say about Michigan Magic Day 2009. Below are just a few of the e-mails that we got after the event. ____________________________________________________ Hello Tony, I am finally back home after my tour in Canada. I would like to thank you again for your warm welcome in Kalamazoo. I really had a good time with you all. And please say to Laura that all the performers have appreciated your work and the efforts you put into Michigan Magic Day. It was a nice convention where we had the time to talk with the magicians and spend some time together. This is what is the most important in a convention and yours allowed us to do that. So many thanks for having me and I am glad to hear people enjoyed my performances. All the best Boris Wild ___________________________________________________ Good Afternoon Mr. Gerard, Ken and Ryan wished me to e-mail to let you know how very much they enjoyed MI Magic Day this year. Thank you for the wonderful day. Thanks Again, Jan Foley ____________________________________________________ Hey there, I think you guys did a wonderful job with the small issues you had. Like I told Laura, Michele works her ass off to get Hocus Pocus going, and once in a while I help her, but she does most of it. Great Job. Magically, Jim Parks ______________________________________________________ Hey I wanted to tell you that my son and I had a great time Saturday Night at the MMDAY Magic Show. Great line-up, I really enjoyed all of the performers. Thanks, Alan Smith ______________________________________________________ tony thank you thank you thank you, I had a blast thank laura too, she is great tim wright _____________________________________________________ Hope to see you at Abbott's Antony Gerard |

NO NO NO Tony, not true! I wrote a confidential memo to the organizers of a later Michigan Magic Day, they specifically asked me for every detail of how I thought Michigan Magic Day 2009 could have been improved. Please don't link me up with this if you were referring to me- I really enjoyed Michigan Magic Day 2009. I thought the evening show was first class (I gave it a "A+" rating in my report) and the dealers were also an "A." I also gave the talent level an A too. Somehow my comments must have been combined somehow with someone' else's very negative ones- NOT MINE! Tony and his wonderful wife have been terrific to me for many, many years, I would have said something to them directly if I thought they could have done anything at any time. Again, I never, ever, ever said any so horrible about Michigan Magic Day- I have no idea how Tony got even part of my comments as they were specifically asked for in a report to another Ring. So sorry Tony! I did complain about "losing my chair" when I got up to go to the bathroom, and did it fact sit in the back. I also cancelled all my Saturday appointments to be there, but that somehow is bad because I did not register earlier? I asked many of my friends to meet me there- and they did! But I will admit in my report I emphasized the close up performers should have a better sound system and better site lines if possible for the venue involved. So anyway Tony, somehow my report must have gotten combined with someone's else's horrible comments- I again thought talent level for both the lectures AND the evening show were EXCEPTIONAL- An A+ especially for the evening show which I thoroughly enjoyed!!! You deserve great credit for putting on a wonderful magic day!

Just a follow up on the above, I will email Tony today too as well. Tony obviously did not see all my report- I really liked Michigan Magic Day. I specifically stated how open and kind everyone was- it is invaluable to me to have Gene Anderson talk to me for a half hour on his new book, or for Chris Capehart to do a "mini-teach-in" on the crash link at midnight at a nearby restaurant, or see JC Wagner do the same thing. Regarding my remarks on The Linking Ring and FFFF, my comments were based on that The Linking Ring should cover conventions like Abbott's too---which they DID. Wow. So I was very grateful to The Linking Ring for that- wrote that both on The Magic Café and to them directly. So thanks again Michigan Magic Day 2009, enjoyed it!

One more thing, I never, ever, never would have used or did use the words "stupid" or "rude"- are you kidding me? Is someone talking bad about me now? Tony knows more about magic in his little finger than I ever will, and has ALWAYS, repeat ALWAYS, been extremely kind to me with with time and energy. NO way can you attribute those kind of commets to me, and I have no idea why anyone would do that to Tony or myself. I don't even use those words. Tony is a first class, hard working magician, ticks me off that someone would apparently tell Tony what I supposedly said. Ridiculous. I have no idea what Tony heard or who from, but it ain't so from me. Must be some other bloke. Carry on Tony, I have some your books including your first edition on magician's stories- I have read it several times and would encourage everyone to get one from Tony. Very funny and some real good stuff Tony has heard over the years. The Neil Foster bathroom story is priceless. Get a copy from Tony's shop or website today!

I just got off the phone with Tony, he can call me "goat boy" from now on rather than MagicBus. As usual, he was very gracious with me and I assured him he is still an A+ in my book. I also told him again the talent level for Michigan Magic Day may never, ever be topped, the evening show was incredible- with a knock out MC, a Boris Wild/Richard Ross ring routine, manipulation and Zombie by Tim Wright, doves by Alan Smola, Chris Capehart, Hank Moorehouse, illusions closing out the show, what more could you ever want? My complaints about the lecture sound system and sight lines were tiny compared to my overall enjoyment of the entire day. Way to go Tony- more magicians should have been there for sure! Next time you're in Kalamazoo in PURE MICHIGAN, check out Tony's shop at The Timid Rabbit. He'll show you card tricks that are not humanly possible.

Hello Roger
Thank you for the reply. It is obvious that the full story did not make it to my desk, as is frequently the case with controversies. I have put this event behind me and hopefully you can also. It is an unfortunate event that should not have happened. Thank you for the kind words and I am glad that you enjoyed my book “The Funny Side Of Magic”. You might be interested to know that I have a second book in the works. It is “The Funny Side Of Magic - Book Two”, including many more true and funny magic related stories. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard |

Thanks Tony, and "The Funny Side of Magic" is really funny, a terrific compilation of TRUE stories about magicians that many you may know. Your response has been most gracious for sure. I look forward to book II of the series, I have no idea where all these great stories come from other than from being in magic full time for a zillion years. A good read, I encourage folks to contact you and pick one up one or tow before they go out of print. By the way, don't ever take a card from Tony, he knows it every time, no matter where you pull it out of the deck. Amazing card guy.
