Try http://www.deandill.com for awesome pads. There is also a type of mat called a Trevor Duffy mat. You can get them at http://www.magicsmith.com and they really are nice. They don't wrinkle, fray, fade in color, etc. like normal close-up pads do and the surface is nicer.

You can't go wrong with the Duffy Mat.
Not for the quality, not for the price. However, Mr. Ash (you ARE the one in the middle, right?), If you were to spring for a mat such as you would find at Dean Dill's site, I would hope to hear a review from you. |

I have heard that mouse pads work well as close up mats but haven't tried it yet. They are quite cheap to buy and really easy to carry around. If you try them let me know how it works out.

Staples has a large mat called something like the Super Mat for about $8. It works great for me.

Are you looking for the best or the cheapest?
I have never seen a more gorgeous pad than Dean's. Yes they are not inexpensive but that's a choice you decide on. Once you've used a Dean Dill pad, it is no fun to use another pad anymore. He uses triple velvet as a topsurface which is really black, and the pad has much more "give" making pick-up moves a breeze to perform. Keep in mind though you can not roll up his pads. They're more like a table top. If I perform formal close-up, Dean's pad is always with me.

Just the scotch brite cleaning cloth for my glasses. :) May also start wearing that old cabbie cap again this winter. Jon
