Hey all,
I want to start with a bit of background so I don't get flamed right off the bat. I have been doing magic for several years and most of that time I have focused on bizarre magic. I have most of the "core" books on bizarre (if there is such a thing), assuming that they are available now. Also, I have perfoming experience and have performed many shows, both for free and for pay with all types of crowds and different types of acts, so I am not new to performing. I have a show coming up that I am particualrly excited about. I have been hired to perform for a paranormal group in September, which will allow me to do an all bizarre presentation. It will be a walk around type presentation, not a routined stage show. It is on a mountain named after the young woman buried there who was part of a French exploration in the 1700's. Indians inhabited the mountain as well and there are petroglyphs there. You can bet this will all be incorporated into the presentation. I have not put together a full bizarre presentation before, though I easily could. I am not asking for people to build my show. I have a lot of my own routines that I plan to present. By way of quick run down, I plan to do the spirit key, a living and dead test, a short fortune telling effect or two and a very short mini-seance, probably using OTL principle. I think this would be enough for a strolling and are things that have the look of real effects and not just magic tricks. So, now to my question, is there any effect out there that you would just HAVE to do if you were doing this type of show? Remember that this is strolling, so I would have to carry props. Also, I would like to stick to the theme of the history of the location. I think all of the above effects would play well to this group, but I was looking to see if there is something that I really should do. I would just hate to negelect a really good effect. |

How about the old potsherd trick in which something appears on the palm of the spectator's hand -- using a real potsherd as well as an image from the petroglyphs?

Hey, Paul is a good guy! And dude, you should post this on the yellow board!
One question, is this at night? (gleefully hopes!) Oh wait, another question...is there a cave or a glen?

Cliff-
Thanks for the good word. Also, I will post this on the yellow board. While I am signed up there, I still can't access all of the forums, despite sending two requests. Oh, well. I don't have a lot of detailed info on the event yet. I haven't been given a time or a specific location. Most of the mountain is wooded with beautiful hiking trails, waterfalls, bluffs. I have spent a lot of time there, so I am very familiar with the location. Also, yes there many caves and caverns. Bill, thanks for the suggestion as well. Also, hopefully, I didn't come off as an ass, I just didn't want people to assume I have no experience and am trying to get something together real quick in order to earn a buck. I have seen posts of this nature often on these boards. |

I'll put in a word with David to hook you up my friend. In the mean time I'll post my further responses on the YB.

Buy Caleb Stranges book 'Garden of the Strange'. It has an effect in there called 'hunting mamoths in the rain'. It would be perfect for this kind of situation

I would recommend this effect highly for the sort of thing you're going to be doing. Do you have any helpers who can fire dance / drum for this effect? A few people panned this book because they couldn't get past this first routine - very closed minded I reckon they are. It's an amazing book full of theatrical effects that really do work. If it's going to be dark when you do this and you are going outside, you may want to try his routine "Wishing Star" too - that really will pack a punch, especially if you do use the fireworks at the end. HAHAHAHAHAH, you guys crack me up. Yeah, but I love the Monkey Demon! Just so long as he doesn't go apeshit and eat someone's face off. Caleb's book is a treasure and a lesson in psychology and balls of solid rock. But hey, what's the downside when you attempt a miracle and only achieve half a miracle? Not so bad.

Jerome Finleys ROAK has a suggestion based effect called Crimson walls of Lichton that would fit well in your situation. He also has some work on short guided visualization and breathing meditations which would also fit in quiet nicely with the whole natural vibe.

My God! Dead threads do get dug up. I better go to the cemetery and check on the corpses. I've never seen a five year dead thread come alive before. On another note: It is a good thread.
