Yes, it is true. Outlaw has come into possession of a few strange and unusual boxes made by one Josephus Hobbs in 1903 and sold to fraudulent spiritualists for performances in their seances, etc. I have now been given permission to mention this after several weeks of silence and secrecy. The small cabinet will include a spirit bell and dead rap from one Mr. Wisseman, and you will be able to explain and demonstrate how the box was used by the mediums of the time to fool their audiences.
After you demonstrate how it worked and the trickery involved...well, let's just say strange things start to happen...without any trickery whatsoever, the bell will ring and thumps will be heard. I may have said too much already...it will be here soon...prepare yourselves... More to come soon... Chad |

Thanks Chad!
Just to Clarify, Tim Wisseman does the electronics and the dead rap is a musket ball hanging in the cabinet next to a bell also hanging in the cabinet. cabinet size is 12 inches long 10 inches high and 4 inches deep It is a "sucker" spirit/dead rap effects, as Chad has eluded to |

Thank you for clarifying that Mr. Roth. And as everyone knows, it will look extremely authentic as per the usual Outlaw/Wisseman products, which in this case means it will look extremely cheap and like something you could buy in the backrooms at a carnival.
My wife says I should not say it will look "cheap," but by "cheap" I mean innocent and above suspicion - it looks like what it is - a fake way to contact the spirits - that is, until the spirits decide to take matters into their own hands... There's something very satisfying about showing how something was done and educating your audience and then watching them scream in fear when it does something that should be impossible based on what you just showed and explained to them... You can tell I'm pretty excited about this! Chad |

Photos will be up this week.
There is actually a separation in the planks of the back wall of the cabinet and you can see through it! So deceptively "low end" looking hehehe. |

If this is what I think it is I saw a photo of this in production a few months back.
It looks really good, not that you'd expect anything else. I'll be getting this for sure as the Cabinet de los Muertos is just a touch out of my aussie dollar price range. Luke |

The big skinny:
The Departed is a very small very "low end looking" cabinet with an open front. Inner dimensions are 10 inches wide-9 inches high- and 3 inches deep. Made in "1903" by Josephus Hobbs It is very old and distressed, in fact there is a separation in the planks in the back wall of the Cab and you can actually see through the wall (very deceptive) Inside the cab: To the right is an old 6 inch piece of hemp twine with an old brass bell hanging from it. There is a hole in the top of the box and the twine is threaded through the hole and knotted on the top (outside) of the box. So you can grab the knot of twine and pull the twine and bell up and down through the tiny hole in the top, showing its not connected to anything except the hemp twine knotted through the top of the cabinet. a few inches away from the hanging bell is an old musket ball also hanging from twine and threaded through a hole in the top of the box and knotted. You can grab the knot and pull the ball up and down, showing it is "only" tied to the outside top of the box. The "musket ball" will swing out and come back and hit the back wall of the cabinet. That is the dead rap. Not a loud sound, but made for having it sitting right on a table (seance style) The bell also rings independently of the ball. Both are controlled by separate toe remotes. Now, the killer part is its a SUCKER box. You explain that it was made for "fakers" You show the back of the cab. and there are 2 holes with a couple inches of twine coming out the back. You tell the spec that these used to be long enough for the "faker" to tie to her foot. You then pull on one of the pieces coming out the hole hidden in the back, and the bell jiggles inside the cabinet. The faker could make the items move by using the hidden twine in the back. You say "but something happened to this box a long time ago. The hidden twines were burned down to just a couple inches, so they are not usable but something strange happens now." (or whatever script you make up) You then talk about "contacting" spirits, and suddenly the ball raps and the bell rings, without anyone pulling on anything. BTW all electronics are hidden in the box and there is an on/off switch hidden with the electronics. Bell and ball are independently under your control, hands free, at all times. The cab. looks like it was at least 100 years old and "low end" including old iron nails in the corners. It may have sold to fakers for 2-3 dollars back in 1903 so essentially you have a little dead rap ball and a spirit bell in a small box made for fakes, but really works! best, Rick |

Sounds amazing as usual. The sucker feature is a great idea and will provide great ideas for a back-story. The box itself is very, very innocent looking. This item will blend well with some other items from the outlaw universe. I cant wait to play with the final version.
