This is a long shot, but I thought I'd try. Some time recently (within the last week I think) I ran across an online video of a gospel presentation using the backstage prop. I remember thinking it was interesting, but didn't worry about it much and didn't bookmark it because I didn't own the trick and it wasn't near the top of my wish list. Well, today I got a deal on one and decided to buy it. Now I'm kicking myself for not bookmarking that video. I think it was on the web site of a dealership, but I just don't remember and I'd really love to see it again. Have any of you seen this video? The only other thing I can remember is that it wasn't the version that used a playing card. I remember thinking that was a cool thing for the real conservative folks who don't use playing cards. Thanks for any help

There is a version of the effect Backstage Vanishing Elephant (on a card) so maybe that is what you were thinking.
We have talked the effect Backstage on the FCM Podcast this month (themagicpodcast.com)...and below is the basic routine. I've not seen the video using it for the gospel. Anyway...hope this brings some ideas your way.
VANISHING SIN The performer tells the audience they will be taken "Backstage" to see how an illusionist might vanish a giant card. To do this, a large card with the word “SIN” on it is shown. After showing how the card "vanishes" by dropping underneath the platform between the plaques, the performer shows the effect again from the front. This time the “SIN” card is placed into the plaques and then the card is shown to not only be gone from between the these, but the when platform drape is pulled away, it is revealed the “SIN” card is no longer there. Make a card the same size as the card supplied with the effect. On this card in very bold letters write the word “SIN” on both sides. On the plaques, which usually have magic hats, cover them and put a picture of the earth on one plaque to represent “worldly thinking” and a cross on the other. GOSPEL ROUTINE Today I would like to talk to you about “SIN.” (Show the “SIN” card) Now the Bible clearly tells us in Romans 3:23 that, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” You see all means all and that's all means. (Show both sides of the card has the word “SIN” on it as you say this) Everyone here, including myself, simply do not live up to the way God wants us to live. Now the big question is, “What do we do about our sin?” I have an effect here that an illusionist might use to vanish a card this size. (Show prop with world side to the front) Now the world tells us, “Hey…so you sinned. Just don't talk about. Hide it away.” (Drop card into between the plaques and have it fall beneath the platform) “Know one will ever know.” (Remove plaques to show the cards appears to have vanished) Well, that may fool some people but I can assure you the world's way of dealing with sin...hiding it away…really doesn't work. Even if the world doesn't find out, God knows where you've hidden it. (Turn the platform around and show the “SIN” card is hanging underneath the platform…then push card back up through the slot in the platform) But there is another way of dealing with our sins. You see our sins have to be paid for and the only way that could be done in the Old Testament was to have a blood sacrifice. It was a big ceremony. But did you know our sins have already been paid for? All we have to do is receive the free gift. (Put plaques back on the table this time with the cross showing on the front) Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He lived a sinless, perfect life. When we admit we are sinners and give it all to him… (Drop the “SIN” card into the gimmicked plaque) …it is like it never happened. (Remove plaques to show card is not there) And when He takes are sins away it is like it says in Psalm 103:12, “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” That means, it is gone! (Pull away drape from the platform to show there is nothing underneath) But for that to happen, you must first accept Jesus into your heart.

Here's the version I use. I personally like this version WAY better (both in the patter and the "style" of the routine) than the one Kif mentions (no offense, Kif):
Today, I am going to disobey one of the basic rules of magic; I am going to share with you how a magic trick is done. How many of you would like that? Oh, not too many, I suppose that we should just skip that. What? You all would like to learn the trick? Well, then here it is. I am going to show you how to make a card vanish into thin air!
Here is the Jack of Hearts (or whatever card). I am placing the card in between two plates. Now when I remove the plates, one at a time, the card has vanished. Here is the secret, though. There is a slot in the “stage” that the card slides through into this little harness below the “stage.” And here you can see the Jack of Hearts. Let me show this to you again from the “backstage view.” And while you are doing the trick, you have to have a clever patter to keep people’s minds occupied. Perhaps something like this…
Welcome one and all to the marvelous card change! What I am going to do for you is take this Jack of Hearts and change it into some other card! Amazing, eh? But first I am going to need someone to select a card from this one card pack. You sir, would you like the top card or the bottom card? Ok, since there is only one card, the bottom is the top and I guess that it is the Jack of Hearts! On my stage I have a card changer, these two plates! I am going to place the Jack of Hearts in between these two plates, and it is going to change into the Ace of Spades! (Turn the trick around) However, you can see that the Jack is in the harness. And now when I take the plates away, the jack has changed to the ace! Where is that ace? I think that it just vanished on me! The card is gone. Yes (rip off the curtain), the card is gone!
This card reminds me of life. We all think that we know what is going on in life. We make a plan for our lives, we look toward what we will do after high school; then we plan for after college. And soon we are looking ahead to the days when we will be retired. The Bible tells a parable about a man who made plans like this. He had brought in a large crop and did not have enough room for all his harvest in his barns, so he decided that he would build bigger barns, so that he could take life easy and then eat, rink, and make merry. But in Luke 12:20, God calls this man a fool.
James 4:13-14 illustrates this point even further. Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Just like you thought that you knew where the card was, so we think that we know where our lives will be in the future. But we can not know. One little girl was riding the brand new bicycle that she had just got for her fifth birthday, when she was hit by a drunk driver. She had so much potential, and that potential was cut short. This just goes to show, that life can not be counted on for the future. Because of this, today is the day! Now is the moment! Ensure an eternity with Jesus, ask him right now to become an integral part of your life.
I change this a little bit, but that's th ebasic concept. Oh, and for purposes of proper credit, this was written by Jay "Happy" Adams.

In situations where using playing cards is acceptable (in some churches they are not), that is a wonderful routine and message. Would think it could be applied to say Backstage Vanishing Elephant...just saying you will change an elephant into another animal. Great idea!

Yeah, that would work just fine as far as I can tell. The reason that patter says a playing card is simply that's the copy I use, and the one that the guy who wrote the patter uses, as well.

I love this routine... Im wondering how well it would play with a Silk to Egg Routine... The silk could represent sin and so on...

I would change, "you must first accept Jesus into your heart" to, "You must repent of those sins and ask Jesus to forgive you first." I believe this is more Biblical than asking Jesus in your heart. Asking Jesus into your heart does not make you forgiven. The only way to be forgiven is to admit to our sins and believe that Jesus Christ died being punished for our sins so that we may live for Jesus who had risen from the dead to bring us new life. When we are ministering to our children, be absolutely sure you are making sense to them. If you lead them down a wrong path, even by mistake because of lack of knowledge, their blood is on your head.
I only say this because too many of our children are being told this, and it's a lie. Considering that most children who ask Jesus into their hearts eventually fall away from church because they never knew what they were doing, and they never were taught properly. They went through the motions, but no real conviction. Our youth do not want to keep going to church, and local studies have shown that most leave the church because they see too many hyprocrites who don't take their faith serious. I have had conversations with several youths that say they don't go to church anymore because it's all about entertaining rather than teaching and leading.
You see, our youth are hungry for some real spiritual food, yet we keep giving them pablum, and when they get tired of pablum we stick raisins in it to make it seem new and fresh. If you cannot make clear what salvation is, what sin is, and how one becomes forgiven in a very biblical way because a trick needs to be performed with it, then I suggest sticking to issues such as discipleship, or relating to spiritual growth. I know of several tricks that can be performed and explain salvation very well. The trick isn't that great so most don't perform it, or most I know don't perform it. I have even been told that the certain trick isn't strong enough to get the message across. Yup, we are living in dangerous times. This is when we need to be using our decernment.

Every year many cities have "New Year's Fest" (like Kalamazoo does) right downtown. All the venues downtown are open until at least 1AM and have magicians (such as Alan Smola in Kalamazoo), jugglers, Zemo the Yo-Yo Master, comics, fireworks, musicians, etc.. I think next year a bunch of us FCMers from Kalamazoo need to look into if one of the downtown churches (located right on Bronson Park where the festival is held tonight) will give us a room and be willing to open at least some of it's doors for some evangelistic non-stop Gospel magic during the night???... I heard many families are coming downtown now at midnight, not just a bunch of thousands of college agers with potential alcohol related attitudes and issues. Street magic maybe at least in one of the downtown church lots? One of my goals for our new KaZoo FCM Chapter meeting 1-14-2012 for the first time is to see if these kind of outreach opportunities for Gospel magicians exist. Ah... the possiblities... the opportunities... Simple Gospel routines like those discussed above for the very portable "backstage vanish" are large enough yet easy enough to do for a mid-sized crowd of curious onlookers.
