Hey guys I don't know if I'm posing this in the right spot but I have a idea and wanna know what you think of it. The no tear by jb magic. Would I be able to have the gimmick behind a newspaper so then I can show my tearing the paper and add the prices to the gimmick ?

Shortelz,
If you would like to tear the newspaper get the version that explaines it. There're a lot of different versions out there.
Of course you could modify the gimmick that you get with the jb magic version, but I don't see why to do so, if it's not just a budget issue.

I have found the No Tear is just as strong as tearing the newspaper with the correct scripting.
Oliver is dead on here, if you want a tear then do a version that is meant for a tear.
Now without getting into the details of the No Tear, I don't think you will like the outcome with using that same gimmick for a tear and restore. For one the special somethings are not strong enough to hold two full sheets ripped up I don't think.
If you decide to do this, PM me and let me know how it works out for ya.
Floyd

No Tear is great, but I really felt I needed a reason to pull out a bunch of newspaper all torn up. The following routine is what I have been using for about 6 years now.
Ladies and gentleman, there is something I want to let you know . . . I am the world's BEST magician. I KNOW that because it said so in the newspaper the other day.
I woke up, opened the newspaper and there it was . . . in BIG BOLD BLACK letters it said "Tommy James World's BEST magician." I was so embarrassed after seeing the article . . . I almost wished I hadn't sent that in! (Gets a laugh) Anyway, I've brought it here to show you. (I then bring out the pieces and look confused) Oh NO! Someone has torn up my article!!!!!
Oh well, magic to the rescue! Abracadabra! (I then restore the pieces and then I thumb thru them and on the entire last page I have written in BIG BOLD BLACK marker "Tommy James World's BEST Magician." ) When doing this for a kid audience there will be at LEAST one kid that shouts out "You WROTE That!" and I say "No, my GRANDMOTHER did!"
Anyway, use it if you like, I know you'll like it!

This effect is VERY strong! If you do multiple shows in a day this version is perfect.
Also, at the end of the DVD he added a list of gags and one liners to get you started.

My patter for kids BD party is along the lines of having collected articles about the BD child (birth, he walks, he talks, magician goes nuts at BD party... oops)and then restore with Happy Birthday ______! hand written the front page (with a little confette thrown in). Gets a good laugh and an ahhhh moment.

Lynn,I like it but do you write the child's name on it and have to make a new one each time? Or does it just say Happy Birthday?

Here is one I use with the no tear.
_____________________________________________________________________________
The other day I was at the airport on my way back home from a show and there was this we little man minding his own business sitting on a bench reading his newspaper.
His paper was all torn up into small bits.
I found this very amusing as the little feller sat there reading one square at a time.
I was intrigued so I asked him why his paper was all ripped up.
He looked up at me and said if this was a full size paper he would not be able to see when tall ugly people asked why he was reading his news paper like this.
He then smiled and said his hands and arms are too small to read the paper in its full size so his wife rips it up so he can read it.
With a smile he handed me the paper and said, would you like to give it a shot.
He snickered a bit looking at my big hands.
I could tell he was trying to get back at me for asking him the question.
So I said why not and thanked him.
After all I am a magician and with a blow I restored the news paper back to my size.
It is interesting what one will do for the daily news.

I also use the No Tear. I origiannly chose it because I needed one with a quick reset time because I was doing 6 shows per day. However, I found that I like it very well. With the proper routine it can play just as well as any, IMO. I now make mine with better gimmicks.

Yep same here, I also used a local rag for mine so it is much smaller now, I did not know if I would like it as well as the big paper but it works just as well if not better. Replacing the gimmick is a must I think.

I know this reply is coming a month after the original, but I am a big fan of the No Tear Newspaper. As the others stated, I made new sets for better handling, and it has been a staple in my routine. When I performed this for a Chamber of Commerce event, I used a version of the local newspaper that featured a story about the Chamber's executive director.
It gets a tremendous reaction because it is so visual and so quick.
My basic routine follows this line:
I told my wife one day how much I liked the USA Today newspaper because it presented the day's news in short, concise stories. The only problem was that I really liked getting the local news you can only find in the local newspaper.
Well, the next day, my wife said she thought she would help me solve my newspaper problem, and she presented this to me (show the pieces).
I told her I appreciated her efforts, but I wanted the stories small and the newspaper big. (restore the newspaper)
Depending upon where you use the No Tear in your show, you can extend it by holding up each piece and "reading" a funny headline. I use it to open all of my shows, except for my mentalism show, so I play it a little shorter to get to restoration quickly.
Here are some headlines you can use:

I use the no-tear version to do the torn & restored. Have been for a year now. I also replaced the gimmicks and use a local paper. Resets in 1 minute. Very visual.
If anybody wants to know my actual setup pm me.

I just received the no tear newspaper yesterday. I would like to change the gimmick to another newspaper mainly because the one it's on now is a personals page and one of the articles reads in bold print, men seeking men. Even if the audience never sees that line I still know it's there and I don't think it's appropriate. I don't want to start tearing this apart though and then realize I can't fix it. Can someone tell me what kind of glue to use and any precautions I should take when getting the gimmick out?
Thanks
Adam

Hmmm...
They must've changed things since I got mine many years ago. It came with written instructions that told you how to fold the paper, where to put the gimmicks, how to do a version where you start with a whole paper and tear it up, etc.
If you want STRONG gimmicks, get Robert Baxt's "Better Newspaper Tear" and do the No Tear routine with that.

The one I received came with DVD instructions only. It tells you how to fold it and replace the first page but not the gimmicked page. That way you can use a newspaper from the area you're in.

No tear is great but for birthday parties I use the bierthday card banner
same principle except you have a bunch of bday cards and I talk about how I just did not know which one ot send then I hold them together and viola I have a giant banner that says happy birhday
I also add the kids name by using white tape and write the name on the tape then after the show peel that off and write the next name
makes it a bit more personal having the kids name on it.

Thanks Sam I'll look into that. I haven't seen that effect before but I just looked it up and it looks like it would work really well at a birthday party. The name idea is great.

No Tear was a regular on my act since 2005. I remove it for "logistic" reasons
( Here in Puerto Rico we don't have that "size of newspaper )
When I do it, It get a HUGE reaction, even the same that I have now with the regular torn and restored newspaper.
Thanks,
Hansel!

I know how dedicated artists feel about not starting by tearing the paper first, but from an audience perspective, do they care?

I thought this would be good as an MC item. All the torn pieces are on the stage, and you comment about someone leaving a mess, pick up the pieces and BAM... retore 'em.

Zombie Magic, thanks for posting this if for no other reason than it brought this thread to the top for me to see. I do think there is a little something lost without the visual tear to start, but with Pete Biro's twist (thanks, Pete!) I think that loss is recovered. The problem I had with no-tear is the motivation for having all theses scraps of paper. The bits mentioned above somewhat solve that problem, but Pete's idea of just a mess left behind by a previous performer seems the most natural, believable explanation. As is often the case, the simplest lie is the most effective.

Reminds me of a gag I used at comedy clubs when MCing. I would walk on with a fake bill finger palmed and reach down to a closeby table and "pretend" to pick the bill up off their table.
I would then tear it to bits and drop the pieces back onto their table, and say... "There'll be a magician on later, ask him to put it back together."

Here is my presentation for the No Tear Newspaper:
The following routine refers to my family life. A younger magician should change it to fit his/her persona. TLL
_________________________
When I got home last night I discovered that my young grandson had torn the evening newspaper into several pieces. (Humorous headlines may be inserted here)
Now one of the advantages of being a magician is that you can easily solve problems like this. So I just said “Sim Sala Bim” and the newspaper became as good as new.
