I have been getting these free marketing tips emails from John Abrams for a few months now and I have to say that I wait by my emailbox for these things to come.
Yeah I get similar emails from all those "same ol'" other guys claiming to have the great life changing tips, but theirs are usually filled with lame duck motivational speeches and broad concepts that are hard to apply (if they apply at all) to my business. And 99 times out of 100 they are just pitching, trying to get you to buy something. John's stuff is easy to read, not annoying, and most of all really contains thought provoking if not totally useful stuff. He really is the guru of variety arts marketing and best of all it's free. His sign up page is on the upper left corner of http://www.rebelentertainers.com. Check it out and sign up. Thanks for letting me share. |

I haven't heard a lot of people talk about his stuff.
Years ago I remember Dave Dee saying he listened to tons of other people's marketing courses and just applied it to magic and then sold that in his marketing course. If that's the case, it makes me wonder how John could be saying anything substantially new when Dave seemed to exhaust most of that. Any thoughts on this? |

Rebel Entertainers looked interesting, so I took a look at John's show web site. How a person promotes his (or her) actual show reveals a lot about what they sell as information. John's show site reads like some of the other information marketers - money back (plus $100) guarantee on the school show, etc.
Sure, that is a simplified look at it - but I didn't see anything that stood out over the rehashed information provided by others. As an original Dan Kennedy student - I'm glad the guy inspires you, but I'm not certain he adds that much to the mix that is already on the market. |

I have to agree with Tom. Looks like any of the other "buy my course and you'll be a star" floggers.

I found out about John Abrams and his Rebel Entertainers newsletter through The Magic Café a month or so ago. And so I signed up for his e-newsletter.
I had never heard of him before then, even though he has products for entertainers. His tips are pretty standard fare, except he doesn't cross promote Eric Paul, Jack Turk, Brad Ross, Dean Hankey, etc. He never mentions them, and they never mention him. Standard fare is not necessarily bad, because it can remind you of things you might already know / might have let slide / might not be implimenting yet. You get to hear the idea from "their perspective." And also, people are at all sorts of different levels in their quest for marketing knowledge and application. For me, I am well-read, and so very little is new. He is clearly a student of Dan Kennedy, etc. In a not-too-distant email, he even talked about multi-step mailings, etc. Here's the interesting thing. John Abrams actually asked his followers, in a very recent email, to tell others about his rebel entertainers e-newsletter on facebook and other social media (I guess Mike, who started this thread, considered the Café to be one of those places). So, a person like MiketheMagicDude making a post came as no surprise. Here's a copy of his email that John Abrams sent to everyone on his list: Quote:
As you can see, MiketheMagicDude took it to heart, and copied some of the wording exactly as was recommended. The trouble with John making that request, and equating it to making a request of my show customers, is that he is asking this favour of his suspects and prospects... not just his customers and clients. There is a different level of rapport there. John has not earned enough credibility with me yet, to ask me to do something like that (I'm thinking of his very specific request about what image to show on Facebook, for example. Or his script of how to word your endorsement.) His favour was too big / too specific to make of me (Donald Dunphy, the newer prospect) considering our level of rapport. It turned me off somewhat. With the endorsements I've made of Eric, Dean, David Farr, etc., I don't recall ever being asked to promote their sites or products, other than being offered an affiliate link once or twice after being in deeper. I just did it because the value was there and they had earned enough credibility with me. I've even done referrals where I didn't use my affiliate link, because I felt that might hinder some people from acting on my advice (even though it doesn't cost them more). John's request was very specific. - Donald P.S. I'm not upset at John Abrams for making his request. So, I didn't remove my name from his mailing list. I just thought it was unwise to be so specific in his request. Why not, "If you know a friend who might benefit from my newsletters & tips, would you please do me a favour? Please mention my website (where they can sign up for my newsletter) on your facebook page, a forum, or some other online community you might be a part of. They might even thank you for it." This turns the whole thing into him asking for help, and showing the prospect / customer that they might benefit from telling others. It also allows them the freedom to promote you in a way they are comfortable with.

Ok. Time to dispel the myth and mystery.
A lot has been written about me on this string. Some good, some mediocre, and some simply speculation and accusation. Maybe this will clarify. It’s no secret that I’m a student of Dan Kennedy. I’ve also studied many other marketers that you may or may not have heard of. It’s also no secret that I’ve studied and applied the info from the entertainers/marketers that Mr. Dunphy referenced above. My website is evidence of it. This is not something I’ve ever tried to hide. Never have, never will. What works, works. My performing record can be found on any one of my websites. You can also ask any entertainer involved in the school or library markets in Southern California, or simply Google John Abrams Magician. I really am an open book. You may not have heard of me because I’ve been busy servicing other variety arts industries. The spill over into the magic world has been very recent. Now, to the posts… Only two people on this string have actually read any of my Free Tips. Magic Mike thinks they’re “Awesome” and Mr. Dunphy considers them “Standard Fare”. I’m very happy with both of these reviews. I appreciated them taking the time to post. I’ve even sent personal emails thanking each of them. I’ve read a number of Mr. Dunphy’s posts. He is, as he says, “very well read” and I suspect that he has a very successful business. His posts are generally very fair, accurate and thorough. The critique of my Free Tips and that specific email, from his perspective, was also very fair and balanced. The only thing that was a bit unfair was posting ONLY the one singular Rebel Entertainer email without posting the follow-up telling the reasons and benefits of such an email. I’ve posted the follow-up so you can judge for yourself. Final note: Some people are put off by my aggressive, shoot from the hip marketing style. And that’s ok. Also, if you’re loyal or overwhelmed by the other folks Mr. Dunphy mentioned (there seems to be two sets of camps here), then my voice isn’t for you. But if you like my straight forward, in your face style, then go ahead and dip your tow in the Rebel Entertainer pool. At least now, instead of speculating, you can judge for yourself. Here ya go: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey __________, A few days ago I sent you an email asking you to write a small posting on one of your social networks (it was sent August 13th). If you’re receiving this email for the first time, you’re one of the folks that signed up because of this strategy. Welcome. I’m excited about having you as part of the Rebel Entertainer phenomenon. Enough small talk, here’s the real results - After only four days (it always takes a bit of time for any strategy to take hold), my list increased by 13.44 percent and still climbing. That’s almost a 15% increase in future business created by an email that took only a few minutes to write. (By the way, thank you very much to the folks that posted. I really appreciate the loyalty and your action). As promised, here’s why this strategy is so important to you: Right now, most of you probably send thank you cards asking your clients very nicely “If you enjoyed my show, please pass on my business cards…etc”. (if you don’t, you should). That’s a great strategy. BUT, with the advent of facebook, twitter and other marketing sites, you now have the opportunity to get your name in front of every one of your client’s friends within seconds. It’s as simple as asking. And if you’re doing a good job, they’ll do it for you. This technique is similar to an Endorsed Mailing (see my recent article in Balloon Magic Magazine). It works. The numbers above speak for themselves. Here’s what you do: Create an email template that will go out to every one of your clients right after your show. You can then cut and paste it into an email lickety split. You can use the same formula that I used in my email. Here’s an example: “Thanks for inviting me to your (event). I hope your (students/staff/patrons/guests) enjoyed it as much as I did. They were all lots of fun. Would you do me a humongous favor? It’ll only take a few seconds and it would help me out a lot. If you’re on Facebook, Twitter or any other social marketing network, you have friends that are (PTA Presidents, Party Planners, Birthday Moms) like you (of course, not as cool and amazingly nice). Here’s what I’d like you to do. If you enjoyed my show and all the services I provided, simply create ONE post on any or all of your social marketing network sites that tells your friends about the great time you had. It’ll only take a few seconds. Here‘s an example of one someone posted just last week: ‘Wow. I just had John Abrams perform his Bully Game Show at my school and he was amazing! If your interested in having a terrific program at your school, you can get his info on (website).’ To make it easy, you can even cut and paste the above paragraph or write it in your own words. Either way. Thanks a bunch for helping out. (Signature)” A couple of observations: You’ll notice that every request is VERY SPECIFIC. In this “new” economy, milk toast marketing and suggesting (instead of requesting) will not do. This is Rebel Entertainer Marketing, not milk toast marketing. Why a cut and paste paragraph? Because you’ll find that some people are great at writing rave reviews and some, not-so-much. This gives them a quick and easy way to do it. If you ask some people to think too much, they won’t respond. Lastly, if you really want to accelerate the referrals, offer them a $5.00 gift certificate to Starbucks if they do it. They just have to send you the link to the post. You can then collect the testimonial. I just finished a show this morning. I’ll be implementing this strategy today. I’m interested in hearing about your results. -John Rebel Entertainer and Guy That Works for Results ------------------------------------------------------------------ |

By taking what you learned and what worked for you, then creating your course, I'm sure you are inspiring others who need to hear the information.
