I will actually be performing in Tarrytown, NY in October for their Sleepy Hollow event and transforming my normally Renaissance Based Character into a 19th century Steampunk character. I'm really looking forward this opportunity as I'm a big fan of all things in this genre.

Greetings to my esteemed colleagues.
For the past few months I've been working on a show with a 19th century flair. This combines my magic hobby with a long-time interest in the Victorian era.
Right now my fledgeling show is centered around classic parlour magic (billiard balls, C&B, rings, etc.), but I wonder if adding some Bizarre effects drawn from the "golden age" of spiritualism would fit. I can also see myself tricking out a square circle, crystal cylinder and other such props into more steampunky styles. Right now I'm looking at a brass door kickplate...my plan is to cut out some fifty-cent piece size cogs and use them in coin routines. I think rolldowns would look very nice, for example.
With all the steampunk and Victorian-themed movies coming out in the next year, one wonders if we'll be seeing more 19th century magic soon.

There was a definite upsurge with Victorian style magic after the release of "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige", not to mention a handful of Victorian, goth-style vampire and other dark-themed films a few years before. There have been attempts at everything from Civil War Era, through the sophistication of Robert-Houdin, all the way to the Bram Stoker-inspired characters in magic.
However, few magicians seem to have taken the plunge and really developed their characters beyond these more conservative, or at least mainstream 19th Century styles. Steampunk is much more flamboyant and inventive. It combines the emerging, but obviously limited industrialization of the period with the futuristic fantasy of a Jules Verne novel. Cumbersome gilt is more the norm here, as anything streamlined in gadgetry didn't come into fashion until the art deco era.
I have a friend here who is also a magic builder, and he came to me several months ago with the suggestion that we develop a line of steampunk apparatus. It's still in the works, but alas, there are so many irons in the fire...

Great! A topic title and subject close to my heart.
Its is interesting to see the emergence of steampunk into popular consciousness
in the past couple of years, as well as the shift of devotees of other subcultures into steampunk as the "new" thing. It is both scary and satisfying. The thing that does scare me is that many will glom on to the "look"...but not the context.
That would be a shame since the genre is brimming with all sorts of plots that can blur the subjects of science, magic and the bizarre all together and wrap it all up in its own cool aesthetic.

I live in Queens but I run the magic shop in New York Costumes (Halloween Adventure) in Manhattan.
Like magic, steampunk has given birth to quite a vibrant subculture. Careful or you may get sucked in. I am not only a magician, I am also a steampunk and I will be happy to share my thoughts on both anytime.

I have performed at a couple of steampunk venues since 2008. It is quite the art movement. But like all art movements it is being overtaken by the money movers as per the earlier link to the steampunk home. Yeah, like we all have marble covered 25 foot bars in our interiors.Of course my character, Dr. Solar, is exactly from this period, after all....solar electricity was discovered in the mid 1860's. I went off-grid in 1980 myself. Soon more photos of my solar electrified vardo will be on my web site. It is a grand movement filled with wonderful folk seeking deeper roots to human power and labor with the extreme bent of scientific conglomerations. I hope to hear more from you, Steampunk Magician.

Steam Punk is a fantastic concept.
I've played with the idea of building a few illusionettes as "spookyoptikon" machines (my term, based on a joke my wife and I made in response to the idea of Edison's spirit contact device).
Excellent sources for inspiration are the GURPS rpg books for Steamtech and Steam Punk.
Also, Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" graphic novels.

Shhh… That Infernal Contraption…. may become reality.
Now I’m being (very) premature here, so this is just a sneak of a sneak-peak heads-up, so since it’s all theory and not practice right now, please don’t breathe a single word, okay???
That said, it looks like I might possibly be collaborating, with that skilled an imaginative woodworker and illusioneer, Gimpy (now famous for his quality light-and-heavy chests).
We’re talking about a Victorian/Steampunk device, able to magically warp time-and-space. The machine will perhaps be called: “That Infernal Contraption” and although it won’t resemble one at all… it’s modus-operandi may be based upon the classic Square-Circle…
It will be lovely to behold, no doubt pack perfectly flat for transport, and just think of the fun you’d have reversing time to discover: Edison’s first light bulb, or Jack the Ripper’s bloody gloves, or perhaps John Wilkes Booth’s top hat! I’ll put on my best thinking-cap to provide the tales to tell.
The possibilities are endless, and you will want one, not just to collect, but to perform. Ah, but I’ve said too much, and it’s all stuck in another time-vortex as yet. So you learned nothing here….

I am hoping some of you with more knowledge about Steampunk magic can help me. I have been asked to display a magic/conjuring performance for a group of fans of Steampunk (various ages) at a yet to be determined venue. I currently have a 18th Century style act and character (pre-Robert-Houdin and Victorian). I don't want to completely re-invent the whole character, costume, and performance, but I know I will need to make some changes.
I currently do a card on wall using a flintlock-type pistol (technically it is a percussion cap pistol). I also do a self igniting candle from across the room using the same pistol. I do some necromancy using a secret code within a hand written letter to communicate with the beyond. I also do a signed note to orange, as well as a multiple rose production using a simple change bag (amazing how many rose buds you can fit into one of those things!) and more. I think with some simple scripting changes most of these will fit in nicely.
The character I was thinking about would be a very early scientist who has discovered rare and strange elements of natural philosophy which allow him to display these strange wonderments.
Any obvious problems, suggestions, or thoughts?

Sounds like you don't have to change a thing. Adding mention of air ships, add some goggles, :\ listen to Abney Park for a while and you're good to go.

I created my Teleportation Device in 1986. It was a 50's retro science fiction effect at that time. Mike Forbes constructed and sold the devices in the early nineties, and then Hocus-Pocus Magic put them out again in early 2001.
About five years ago, when I created the 19th Century Western Steam Punk character, I made the device into more of a steam model and added goggles to the character:

I sell the rights to the routine, along with a DVD explaining the whole trick, along with a CD with some basic diagrams of the workings of the device and photos of the inside and outside of several different versions of the device for $50. You can build it yourself, or have someone make it for you.
Don Stachowiak is currently custom-making them, and does a wonderful job, for dirt cheap in my opinion.

I just did my flea circus for a Steampunk event here in Seattle last weekend. It went over quite well and I booked another Steampunk event while I was there.
People of course wondered what a flea circus had to do with Steampunk. But I told them if they looked closely they'd notice that I had fitted all of my fleas with teeny tiny pairs of goggles. Thus making it properly Steampunk.
I contend that we are both atheists.
I just believe in one fewer god than you do.
