Don't think it has been menti0oned but you could try wrapping 2 bands around the deck.

I played with the two bands yesterday. One around the corners and one around the middle. It feels much safer and it stays together well.

Be careful with those suspended ceilings. I worked a place that had old ceiling panels and sometimes there would be a shower of dust when the deck hit. I made sure that I never performed it over a table, always off to the side.

Two or three years ago, I raised the problem with bursting bands.. and cards all over the place. Socalpro responded with the double band advice, which I've used ever since, and never had a problem with broken bands.
The one and only time the entire deck stuck to the ceiling had me as amazed as everyone else at the time.. lucky I always keep a spare set of kit in the car.. It's easily the most requested card trick I do. Wish I could find another one with the same impact. Regards, DCB

Funny that this thread should pop up here TONIGHT of all nights.
Before getting into the meat of the story, I need to tell you the set up for Cristina's. They have an outdoor patio, which leads into the main dining room which leads to a smaller dining area which leades to another small dining area. Ok...so, I get into Cristina's tonight and I'm flagged down by a table right off the bat who wish to see magic. They are in the main dining room. When my first table is in the main dining room I always like to open with Card on Ceiling. It's an easy way to announce to the room that "the magician has arrived!" So I get everything ready to go, I'm loaded I kick back and start my backswing when it HITS ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS! ALL OF THE CARDS ON THE CEILING WERE GONE! My heart stopped but was already into my downswing and the deck sailed high and mighty delivering a card to ceiling. PRETTY! The people at the table were astounded and the applause from all over the dining room roared in. AWESOME! Knowing something was up, I began quickly looking around for the GM who was the MOD tonight. Our eyes met and he started flagging me down. I gave him the "nod...give me one second and let me finish up at this table" signal. He gave me the thumbs up and I finished. I went and found to find him and noticed the all my cards in the OTHER DINING ROOMS were still on the ceiling in full display. I'm very confused but manage to find the GM. I was told that the owner of the restaurant came in the other day and saw the cards. He didn't like the way it was making his main show place look and made the GM get on a ladder and remove all the cards. The owner said he was fine with them in the other dining rooms since it's not the main area but he didn't want the cards on the ceiling in the showplace. So...in this situation...even tho' I had permission from the GM to begin with, the GM never got permission from his boss and it created a slight moment of awkwardness. Bottom line...sometimes, even when you have permission...you don't! The end result was all fine and good. The GM said he'd take down the card at the end of the night and it was cool for me to continue doing the routine in the other areas, just not the main dining room...no harm no foul. The real bummer was that many of my regulars who had cards on the ceiling were a bit ticked off that they were no longer on the ceiling...so I had to explain why. I now fear that the other dining rooms will begin to be a requested seating spot for many people now since word got around that I could no longer do that bit in the main dining room. Food for thought...! Christopher

Thanks to this post I think I'll bring out my card on ceiling and give it a shot! Of course I'll play with it a few times before giving it a go!

Leland,
For wax users. As we get into cooler weather this winter, you may need the think about how soft your wax will be when you get ready to perform the trick. I usually need to leave my bag in the car, at least for a while, before I head to the restaurant. If the wax gets cold it can be difficult to get it to stick to the ceiling. I have found that for about a buck in the plumbing section at Home Depot or Lowes I can buy a wax ring used to stick down a toilet. This wax is a bit softer than the kind usually sold by magic stores for this trick, and because of this, it will soften up faster in the winter. You may not want to go this way in the summer, but good to know in the winter. |

So when did card on ceiling become a "card to ceiling? How do you get it out of the ceiling? Does it have a zipper? Do you knock a hole in it?

Well, if you're going to split hairs, technically, it's "card UNDER ceiling." Wait, it was always actually under the ceiling, even when you started. So, it's "card LESS under ceiling."

It's not "splitting hairs" It's a matter of getting the correct name for an effect. It isn't a simple mistake either.

Anyone ever do Any Named Card to Ceiling? with a memorized deck? Wondering how that might play.

Once I did this at a B&B sitting at the kitchen table. I had put rubber bands on each end of the deck. When I threw the cards up the card stuck to the ceiling but only one end of it came out of the rubber bands. So there I was looking up at the spectators card stuck to the ceiling with the rest of the cards hanging down from it at about a 12 degree angle. The deck was just dangling there. Every one thought it was great, but I was just wondering how long that little ball of wax would hold up. Luckily just after the trick was done the B&B owner called everyone into the dining room for lunch. I quickly jumped up on the table and retrieved the deck leaving the card on the ceiling. That was over 30 years ago. I went to visit the B&B last year (my wife and I became good friends with the owners after spending a vacation there)and the card is still where I left it, after all this time. I asked the owner why she never took it down. She said that every-time someone new stays at the B&B they always ask why is there a card on the ceiling? She said it is a great conversation starter and has just "become" part of the charm of the B&B.

Im curious if anyone has come up with any creative ways to store a bit of wax for card to ceiling. I have tried the top of a sharipe, and folding a packet of loops over a ball of wax for storage.

I bought a decorative pill box from Walgreens and put the wax along with the bands inside.
When I retrieve the bands I pick out the wax ball at the same time.

Some thoughts:
1 Instead of using wax I like to use scotch tape as suggested by Bruce Elliott in "Classic Secrets of Magic" 2 Because of the possibility of "missing" I force a card and have the duplicate "somewhere" (spectator's pocket etc) (For years I've had a card on the ceiling of my office and I would do the effect for newcomers without worrying about scotch tape) |

I use Michael Ammars routine. I still use the SUCRETS box. Holds the wax balls, Bands and has a funny line...
