Well, put me out in left field on this one- I will add one additional point I did not see above. I find hypnosis as "entertainment"- bbbooooorrrrrriiiinnnnggg. Boring. Especially as part of a magic show/convention. And I have seen many performers use it including Kreskin when he put on a show here in Michigan. I have witnessed "hypnosis" be the second part of a magic convention stage show- about 75% of those "chosen" on stage where instructed to go back to their seats- while another 25% of the audience were looking for the exits. And those on stage, maybe three were really in to it. Big whoop. What I have been forced to endure (and again, it is just my personal opinion) is you have to be really, really good (and who is?- maybe Kreskin) to pull this off/entertain using hypnosis- otherwise is the same old hacknied, way too much time comsuming act that practically everyone on the planet has seen many times before...
My view may be different than the above- I think kids can be much better reached through Gospel magic, puppets, vent obviously... And adults- well I have no clue how the Gospel could be included in a hypnosis entertainment program- other than perhaps putting everyone to sleep by the presentation. Yikes, that's pretty harsh. One recent convention I attended where a "hypnosis" act was included- most in the audience (including myself) wished it would just end. Couldn't get away as I did not have an aisle seat. Of course, I am sure the hypnosis act going on in Vegas right now is full of double entendre and is put on by a very talented personality, but this may be an academic FCM discussion as I have no clue how this could be tied into a Gospel magic type presentation. I agree with Gospel Dan above. |

Is it entertaining to ask a person on stage under "hypnosis" to "act like a chicken?" That's exactly what I last saw in a live act. That might be entertaining to a third grader or a bar crowd, I'm not sure. Maybe the hypnotist should have followed it up with an egg bag routine, multiplying eggs, or Barry Mitchell's Super Chicken. Just a real stretch for any Gospel application?

He touches up on the subject. While we as Christians cannot be possessed, we shouldn't mimic it, nor even bring it into an act. I think it causes conflict to our beliefs; even in entertainment. We must hold ourselves to a Higher Standard. Finally, I believe this could be brought under the guise of "Appearance of evil" which we are to stay away from. "Mind Control" is not of God and regardless if this "hyperattentive" or not, the audience does not see it that way. If we are to perform as Christians, we MUST ask ourselves in all actions we do; Does my actions benefit the Kingdom and perform the will of God? -2 cents |

I had a discussion about this with a wonderful Christian friend of mine, she was of the opinion of feeling odd about it, with respects to the idea of giving control of your actions to someone else, but I was (in an uneducated and sloppy way) trying to suggest (HA! get it!?) the concept that the hypnotist has no "power" in any sense over the other person.
Otherjohn, great words, very encouraging! As for your original Q Brett, I'd say the preconceptions I have found are mixed and varied from Christians, but also I have never met a Christian magician aside from myself, where does everyone hide? -Anthony

Ok, coming from the Eastern Orthodox Christian side, it is understood that hypnosis is (rightfully) a NATURAL state our bodies enter. The guidelines the Ancient Church sets down is that it MUST be clear that one is doing magic or one of the related arts for ENTERTAINMENT and that all is being done by NATURAL means.
I do not do "Gospel Magic" but I do not frown upon those who do. For ME, the BEST teacher is the Church. I have never felt the need or desire to use Magic to teach lessons about Our Lord. Again there is NOTHING wrong with it, it just isn't for "me". All that said, God Bless all here! Ahimsa, Vlad |

I don't understand hypnotism, but as a 31 year student of God's word, I don't see scriptural evidenced to view hypnotism as a tool or opportunity for Satan. Yet, because of this, I would shy away from doing this in a "Christian" setting. While in college a psychology professor told us that a person will NOT do something under hypnosis that they would not due while not hypnotized; hypnotism is a form of focused attention, not sleep, nor unconciousness, nor mind control. To illustrate his point, he told a story of another hypnotist trying to demonstrate this point - he called up a female student, hynotized her, and then asked her to take her clothes off. To his, and the classes surprise, that is exactly what she did. It turned out she worked as a stripper.
